Android Advanced Protection can block apps installed from unknown sources, limit which accessibility services can run, and enable stronger Chrome protections. The exact install rules depend on whether you mean the Android device setting or enrollment in Google Account Advanced Protection; they are related but distinct.
First, distinguish device protection from account enrollment
Google uses “Advanced Protection” in two related contexts. The device setting changes protections on an Android device. Google Account Advanced Protection is an account-enrollment program with its own app-install rules. Google documents different behavior for each, so the app source and whether an app is new, already installed, or being updated matter.
How device Advanced Protection affects app installs
With the Android device setting on, apps from unknown sources cannot be installed, and updates are blocked for apps that were originally installed from unknown sources. Google also says Google Play Protect cannot be turned off while device Advanced Protection is active. Google warns that apps from unknown sources may not be vetted and can carry greater risk. How Google Account Advanced Protection handles app sources
Google’s account-enrollment rules describe a separate set of allowances. New apps generally cannot be installed from most sources outside the Play Store, but Google lists Google Play, Android Debug Bridge (ADB), and preinstalled Android app stores as allowed sources. Existing apps installed from outside Google Play are not removed and can still receive updates. Details are in Google Account Advanced Protection.

Some Play Store apps have not been approved by Advanced Protection. Google describes a “See details” and then “Continue to install” flow for these apps, and recommends proceeding only if the app is essential or its developer is trusted. This account-enrollment exception is not the same as the device setting’s block on apps originally installed from unknown sources.
Google says that after removing the enrolled account or unenrolling, it can take up to 24 hours for automatic protections to stop.

What changes about permissions and accessibility?
The documented permission-adjacent restriction is on accessibility services: device Advanced Protection restricts them to verified accessibility tools, reducing the risk from malicious apps. Google’s Android documentation does not establish that this feature changes ordinary camera, microphone, location, or other runtime permission prompts.
Do not confuse this with a separate Play Protect behavior: Google says it may reset permissions for apps that have not been used for three months on devices running Android 6.0–10. That is an Android-version-qualified Play Protect behavior, not a general permission change caused by Advanced Protection. See Google Play Protect help.

What Advanced Protection changes in Chrome
On Android, Advanced Protection controls several Chrome settings. Chrome’s explanation is available in Chrome Help.
- Secure connections: “Always use secure connections” is enabled with “Warns you for insecure public & private sites” selected. Chrome uses HTTPS for website connections whenever possible.
- Safe Browsing: Android Safe Browsing Live Threat Protection is enabled to block phishing attacks from newly emerging malicious websites.
- JavaScript optimizations: These are turned off. Google says disabling the JavaScript optimizer reduces potential security exposure.
- WebGPU: Chrome WebGPU is turned off. Android Help describes WebGPU as an advanced graphics technology and says disabling it helps protect against certain security threats and risk.
These changes prioritize protection, but turning off WebGPU or JavaScript optimizations may affect sites or features that rely on those technologies.

Turn on device Advanced Protection
- Set a screen lock if you do not already have one; Google requires it before device protection can be enabled.
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection. Depending on the device, you can also look in Google settings under All services > Personal and device safety.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to enable the protection. A reboot may be required.
Menu labels and availability can vary by Android version and device maker; Google does not provide a complete manufacturer-by-manufacturer availability list. The “Apps that checked for Device protection” list is available only on Android 16 devices, according to Google’s Android help page.
