Start with the one control that matches your problem: Hold Duration, Ignore Repeat, or Tap Assistance.
What Touch Accommodations changes
Touch Accommodations lets you change how iPhone responds to taps, swipes, and touch-and-hold gestures. Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes it as an accessibility feature for people who have difficulties with hand tremors, dexterity, or fine motor control. Menu labels and availability can vary with iOS version and locale, so use the closest matching labels on your device.
How to turn on Touch Accommodations
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations.
- Before switching it on, adjust the option that corresponds to your difficulty. You can also follow Set Up Touch Accommodations and its onscreen instructions to see a personalized list of options.
- Turn on Touch Accommodations, then try familiar screen actions and adjust the setting if needed.
Choose the setting for the touch problem
| What happens | Setting to try | What it changes |

| A brief touch is missed or not accepted as intended | Hold Duration | Requires a touch to last for the configured time before iPhone accepts it. Touches and swipes during that interval can be ignored. |
| One intended tap registers several times | Ignore Repeat | Treats multiple touches made within the configured interval as one touch. |
| Your finger shifts after touching the screen | Tap Assistance | Lets you choose whether the initial or final finger location determines the tap. |
| Swipes are harder after changing tap timing | Swipe Gestures | Changes how much movement is required before a swipe begins. |
If iPhone registers a tap too quickly: Hold Duration
Turn on Hold Duration and set how long your finger must remain on the screen before a touch is accepted. This can help when a quick or light touch does not reliably register. Apple says that touches and swipes within the configured duration are ignored; when Hold Duration is set beyond 0.3 seconds, a circular timer appears to show the remaining time.
If one tap becomes multiple: Ignore Repeat
Turn on Ignore Repeat and adjust the interval between touches. iPhone treats multiple touches within that interval as a single touch. If separate taps begin to merge, reduce the interval; if accidental repeat taps still get through, increase it and test again.

If your finger slides to the wrong spot: Tap Assistance
Under Tap Assistance, select the location that best matches your intended target:
- Use Initial Touch Location: iPhone uses the place where your finger first touches the screen. Try this when your finger tends to drift after landing.
- Use Final Touch Location: iPhone uses the place where your finger lifts. Try this when the lift-off point is more deliberate than the landing point.
With Use Final Touch Location, the selected gesture delay sets the time window. If you wait longer than that delay, iPhone may recognize another gesture, such as a drag, instead.

If swipes become difficult: Swipe Gestures
Swipe Gestures changes how far your finger must move before a swipe begins. Apple’s Support article says this option requires both Hold Duration and Tap Assistance to be enabled. The iPhone User Guide describes enabling it in the Hold Duration or Tap Assistance settings; follow the instructions and labels shown on your iPhone.
Why ordinary taps or swipes may feel delayed
Hold Duration and Tap Assistance can cause taps and swipes within the relevant time window to be ignored. That is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault with the touchscreen. If ordinary actions feel delayed or swipes no longer behave as you intend, reduce the timing or revisit the location setting, then test both taps and swipes. Apple documents options to recalibrate or reset Touch Accommodations if the current configuration no longer suits you.

Is Haptic Touch the right setting for a slow tap?
Not usually. Haptic Touch controls how long a touch-and-hold takes to show options or previews; it is separate from the settings for ordinary taps. To change it, go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Haptic Touch, choose Fast or Slow, and test with the image displayed on screen.

If touch gestures remain difficult, AssistiveTouch is a separate accessibility option. Apple says it can perform actions such as Home, double-tap, scrolling, and multifinger gestures, with or without a compatible adaptive accessory such as a joystick. It is not required to configure Touch Accommodations.
