If Prime Video titles won’t play, keep buffering, or show a playback error, start by checking the device’s internet connection, then restart and update the device and app. If those steps do not help, check account and playback limits, app data, and—only when using external equipment—the HDMI display connection. Work through the steps below in order, beginning with the least disruptive fixes.
1. Check the internet connection
Confirm that the device running Prime Video is online in its network settings. If it uses Wi-Fi, verify that it is connected to the intended network and that the password is correct. A device can show a connection to the router while still having trouble reaching Prime Video.
Restart the playback device and, if needed, the router and modem. If Prime Video works on another network but not your current one, Amazon says to ask your internet service provider to check whether DNS traffic on port 53 is blocked. That is a specific possibility to investigate under those conditions, not a universal explanation for buffering. See Amazon’s Troubleshoot Internet Connection Issues with Your Connected Device.
Run network diagnostics on Fire TV
On compatible Fire TV devices, open Settings > Network or use the diagnostic option shown with the connection error. Depending on the model, you may see Run Speed Test or Advanced connection information. Menu names and available tools vary. You can also restart Fire TV, toggle Wi-Fi off and on, or forget the network and reconnect. Amazon’s steps are in Troubleshoot Internet Connection Issues with Your Fire TV.

2. Restart Prime Video and install updates
- Close Prime Video. If you are watching in a browser, close the tab or browser.
- Restart the device. Amazon’s general playback guidance says to wait at least 60 seconds before powering it back on.
- Check for and install available updates for the device, browser, and Prime Video app.
For Fire TV, restart from its settings or unplug it for one minute as described in Amazon’s general playback guidance. Amazon’s Fire TV network troubleshooting page gives a separate, device-specific instruction to unplug for 10 seconds during connection troubleshooting; follow the procedure applicable to your issue and device rather than treating one interval as universal.
3. Check playback settings, account conditions, and other streams
- Set date and time automatically. Amazon recommends automatic date and time for listed playback errors.
- Turn off VPN or proxy services while testing. They can interfere with playback troubleshooting.
- Pause other internet activity. Amazon recommends pausing other activity, particularly when other devices are using the network at the same time.
- Check simultaneous playback. Amazon’s general playback guidance says the same title can be streamed on two devices at a time. Stop playback of that title on another device and try again if necessary.
- Confirm a purchase completed. If a purchased title will not play on Fire TV, check the order status.

4. Clear Prime Video app data on Fire TV
If the issue appears limited to the Prime Video app on Fire TV, clear its cache and data in the device’s Applications settings. The exact labels may differ by Fire TV model and software version. Clearing app data can remove locally stored app information, so be ready to sign in again if prompted.
If clearing data does not help, Amazon’s general troubleshooting guidance also suggests uninstalling and reinstalling the app where that option is available. Treat a factory reset as a last resort: Amazon warns that it removes account information and downloaded content from apps on the device. Before resetting, make sure you can sign in again and preserve any content or information you can.

5. Check HDMI and display compatibility for connected devices
If a streaming box or other external device connects to your TV or display, check the HDMI connection and every device in the signal path. Amazon specifies HDCP 1.4 support for HD playback and HDCP 2.2 for UHD/HDR playback. Dolby Vision playback also requires the display and any additional connected device to support Dolby Vision.
These are compatibility checks for external-device setups; they are not a general fix for buffering when the network and playback connection are otherwise working. Amazon’s requirements appear in Issues While Playing Prime Video Titles.

6. Note the error code and get support
Amazon lists playback codes including 1007, 1022, 5001, 7003, 7005, 7031, 7135, 7202, 7203, 7204, 7206, 7207, 7230, 7250, 7251, 7301, 7303, 7305, 7306, 8020, 9003, and 9074. The shared troubleshooting guidance does not identify a distinct cause for each code, so record the exact code rather than assuming it points to a particular fault.
If the connection, restart, updates, playback conditions, and relevant app or display checks do not resolve the problem, contact Amazon support with the device model, what you tried, and the exact error message or code. If the app works on another network but not your current one, ask your ISP to check the DNS condition described in Amazon’s connection guidance.
