Agentic AI in FPGA design means coordinating a sequence of engineering tasks and tools—not simply generating RTL, and not replacing the engineer responsible for the design. An agent might draft code or tests, run a check, interpret the resulting diagnostics, and propose a bounded revision. Whether that work is useful depends on the target device, the vendor toolchain, and verification at every stage.

What makes an FPGA workflow agentic?

A one-shot AI assistant responds to a prompt with an artifact, such as a Verilog module. An agentic workflow goes further: it breaks a task into stages, uses intermediate artifacts and tool results to choose what to do next, and iterates. In FPGA work, that can mean moving between a written specification, RTL, testbenches, simulation or formal tools, synthesis, implementation, timing reports, and—when appropriate—hardware tests.

AMD Corporate Fellow Alex Starr describes this direction in the vendor perspective How Agentic AI Is Reshaping Chip Design (April 9, 2026), discussing chained tasks, critique and iteration, debug triage, and timing optimization. These are possible workflow roles and a direction of travel, not evidence that a general-purpose agent can safely complete an FPGA project end to end.

Where an agent could help—and where its authority should stop

The useful distinction is between assistance with intermediate work and authority to declare a design correct. An agent can prepare artifacts and summarize evidence; it should report what the tools actually did rather than claim success for checks it did not run.

Workflow activity Potential agent contribution Evidence or approval needed
Requirements and interfaces Turn a prose specification into candidate interfaces, clock and reset assumptions, and acceptance checks. An engineer confirms that the interpretation matches the specification before implementation.
RTL and test development Draft Verilog or SystemVerilog, testbenches, or scripts; explain code and propose revisions. Review the generated artifacts and check them against the requirements.
Debug and iteration Sort logs, explain diagnostics, identify likely causes, and propose a bounded change for another run. Preserve tool output and verify the revised design with the relevant checks.
Implementation analysis Summarize synthesis, resource, or timing reports and suggest areas for investigation. Use the target vendor tools and judge results against the actual constraints and device.
Project decisions and hardware programming Prepare options or a checklist for a human decision. Keep specification changes, IP choices, constraints, and final hardware programming under human approval.

This division matters because a plausible explanation is not a tool result. If an agent says that a design passed simulation, formal verification, synthesis, timing analysis, or hardware validation, the claim should be traceable to the corresponding run and its output.

What a responsible agent-assisted workflow looks like

The sequence below is a practical pattern, not a claim that one product currently automates every stage. Adapt it to the FPGA family, project, and vendor flow; not every design uses every check in precisely this order.

  1. Make the specification testable. Record interfaces, clock and reset assumptions, constraints, and acceptance checks. Resolve ambiguities with the design owner rather than allowing an agent to silently choose behavior.
  2. Draft reviewable artifacts. Generate RTL and tests in small, inspectable changes. Keep the specification and project context available so the agent does not work from isolated code fragments.
  3. Run appropriate early checks. Use lint, simulation, or formal verification where applicable. Feed actual diagnostics into a bounded revision, then rerun the checks rather than treating a suggested fix as proof.
  4. Use the target vendor flow. Synthesize and implement for the selected device with its supported tools and project settings. Preserve logs and distinguish completed tool runs from proposed commands or plans.
  5. Inspect implementation evidence. Review resource use and timing against the design constraints. A report summary or optimization suggestion is not itself timing closure.
  6. Validate on hardware when the task requires it. Program the intended device and check observed behavior where appropriate. Keep final programming and acceptance decisions under human control.

The validation sequence is design-dependent. Simulation, formal checks, synthesis, implementation, timing analysis, and hardware validation answer different questions; a pass at one stage does not establish that all the others pass.

Why the FPGA family and tool version matter

An agent cannot treat “FPGA flow” as one interchangeable toolchain. AMD documentation UG1192, End-to-end Workflow for SoC Designs, describes AMD-device design using Vivado and Altera-device design using Quartus Prime, followed as applicable by platform or processor configuration, hardware export, software development, and image generation. Its FPGA hardware-design stages include HDL design, synthesis, place-and-route, and bitstream generation.

Context Documented flow detail Scope to keep in view
AMD and Altera SoC workflows UG1192 maps AMD-device design to Vivado and Altera-device design to Quartus Prime, with downstream platform or processor and software stages as applicable. This is a workflow reference; it does not make the vendor tools or their project artifacts interchangeable.
AMD Versal Adaptive SoC, Design Guide 2026.1 UG1273 describes hardware-platform creation with Vivado IP Integrator and RTL; AI Engine graph and kernel development with Vitis when supported by the selected Versal family; programmable-logic kernel work with Vitis tools or Vivado RTL; integration; implementation and design closure in Vivado; and embedded-software development. This platform-based sequence is Versal-specific and should not be generalized to every FPGA family.

Before using an agent with a real project, establish the exact device family and tool release, whether work is RTL or uses HLS or another kernel flow, and which simulation, formal, synthesis, and implementation tools are available. Project context, constraints, and traceable outputs are as important as the agent’s ability to write code.

What published research does—and does not—show

VeriMaAS: a bounded RTL workflow result

The 2025 paper Automated Multi-Agent Workflows for RTL Design by Bhattaram, Ramamoorthy, Gupta, Marculescu, and Stamoulis introduces VeriMaAS, which composes RTL-generation workflows and incorporates feedback from formal-verification tools. The authors report a 5–7% improvement in synthesis performance by pass@k over fine-tuned baselines in the evaluated setting, involving controller tuning and a few hundred examples. That result is specific to their experiment; it is not a measured 5–7% improvement in FPGA productivity, project completion time, or hardware performance generally. The paper is an arXiv preprint marked accepted to the ML for Systems Workshop at NeurIPS 2025.

AgentDV: check publication status before using results

The arXiv record for AgentDV: Closed-Loop Agentic AI for Hardware Design Verification described a loop of testbench generation, simulation, coverage measurement, and refinement. Its authors withdrew the manuscript on September 24, 2026, citing errors in methodology and experimental setup while it undergoes revision. Its posted performance figures should therefore not be presented as validated results.

What remains unestablished

These examples show active research into tool-feedback loops, not a settled production recipe. The available evidence here does not establish an industry-wide productivity or adoption figure for agentic AI specifically in FPGA design, nor does it establish that a current agent can autonomously deliver a verified, timing-closed design on a particular board. AMD’s April 2026 article is a vendor perspective, not an independent measurement of FPGA-specific gains.

How to assess an agent for a real FPGA project

Generated-code fluency is an incomplete measure. A useful evaluation should establish what the system can access, what it actually ran, and how the resulting design performed in the target flow.

  • Target fit: Which FPGA family and vendor tool release does it support?
  • Flow coverage: Does it work with the project’s RTL, HLS, or kernel workflow, and can it access the relevant simulation, formal, synthesis, and implementation tools?
  • Project context: Can it use the actual interfaces, constraints, IP configuration, and project artifacts without quietly substituting assumptions?
  • Traceability: Can a reviewer inspect edits, commands, logs, and tool outputs, and distinguish completed checks from suggested next steps?
  • Approval boundaries: Can human review be required for changes to requirements, IP choices, constraints, and device programming?
  • Measured outcomes: Are functional coverage, timing, and resource results reported for the intended design and toolchain—and was behavior tested on hardware when needed?

For hands-on learning or bring-up, an FPGA development board can make hardware validation possible, but no single evaluation kit is a universal choice. Confirm device-family compatibility, I/O, host connection, programming and debug features, toolchain support, and the full project requirements before selecting a board. AMD’s Versal guide names VCK190 as an evaluation-kit example; that reference does not establish it as the right board for a general reader or for every workflow.
