Then isolate the symptom: use the storefront-specific rollback steps only where available, troubleshoot REDlauncher separately from the game itself, and disable mods to test whether they are involved. CD PROJEKT RED does not establish whether saves made on a newer version will load after a downgrade, so preserve a copy of your saves before changing builds.
Before troubleshooting, record your storefront and game version
Storefront matters because rollback controls differ, and support will need to know which version you are running. The official support form displayed 5.0 (Latest), 4.04, and 1.32 as version choices when documented; those form options do not independently confirm which build is currently latest on every platform.
- Record whether you use Steam, GOG Galaxy, or Epic Games Store.
- Note the installed game version and whether the problem began immediately after changing it.
- For a launch issue, record whether the game executable fails or REDlauncher fails to open.
- Record whether you use mods, trainers, or console commands; the official support form asks about these.
I want to revert to an earlier version of the game
CD PROJEKT RED documents rollback controls for Steam and GOG Galaxy, but says Epic Games Store does not permit rolling back to an earlier version. The official instructions are on the publisher’s rollback support page. Because storefront controls and available builds can change, check that page for the current labels. Its instructions are on a Spanish-language official page.

The same support article describes the latest version as the only compatible version and recommends updating if a problem occurred on an older version. Treat that as the publisher’s general support guidance, not as confirmation that every save from a newer build is incompatible with every older build.

Game is not launching
First determine whether the game itself fails to start or whether REDlauncher is the part that fails. The fixes differ. For general launch crashes, CD PROJEKT RED’s launch support form recommends installing the latest GPU drivers. It also points to a clean install and support escalation if the issue persists; a clean install is not a guaranteed fix.
If REDlauncher will not open
- Close the store and launcher, then run your store platform—Steam, Epic Games, or GOG Galaxy—as administrator.
- Delete the REDlauncher folder at
%localappdata%ProgramsCD Projekt Red. - Remove any launch parameters set for the game.
- Retry launching. If REDlauncher still fails, contact CD PROJEKT RED support.

If the game crashes or does nothing after you start it
- Update your GPU drivers, then try launching again.
- If you use mods, trainers, or console commands, include that information when reporting the problem.
- If the problem continues, follow the support form’s clean-install guidance and provide the requested diagnostic information, including a DxDiag report.
I am unable to load my save after changing versions
CD PROJEKT RED’s rollback instructions do not say whether a save created on a newer PC version will load after downgrading, and the support material cited here does not establish downgrade-specific compatibility. Do not assume either that it will load or that it cannot load. The publisher’s separate cross-progression guidance concerns saves shared across platforms, not compatibility between PC game versions.
As a general file-safety precaution—not an official compatibility instruction—copy your save folder somewhere safe before changing versions or reinstalling. The official support form lists the Windows save location as %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. Each save consists of a .sav file and a same-name .png image. If you report a gameplay issue, the form asks you to compress and attach the relevant files. See the official support form for its submission requirements.

Reporting issues with in-game mods
Mods can cause crashes, prevent launch, or produce other unexpected behavior, including after a game update. The first step is to distinguish mods installed through the in-game Mods menu from third-party PC mods installed outside that menu. CD PROJEKT RED’s mod support article gives different troubleshooting advice for each.
Mods installed through the in-game menu
- Disable or unsubscribe from the in-game mods, then check whether the original problem remains.
- If the problem disappears, report it to the mod creator through that mod’s page.
- If it continues, consider whether earlier mod use may have changed the save. The publisher says those effects can remain after a mod is disabled and that an earlier save from before mod use may be needed.
CD PROJEKT RED advises: “We advise against installing mods that alter quest structure mid-playthrough.”

Third-party PC mods installed outside the in-game menu
For these mods, CD PROJEKT RED recommends a clean install. Removing a mod alone should not be treated as proof that changes it already wrote into a save have been reversed.
Where to report a mod problem
For a problem with mod content, use the mod page’s Report button or mod.io/report. For a suspected issue with the game itself, report it through the official support site.

The official launch support form asks for details that help separate a version, platform, or mod issue from a general installation problem. Prepare the following before submitting a report:
