For more gerbera blooms, choose one consistent feeding plan: apply controlled-release fertilizer two or three times during the growing season, use a complete fertilizer monthly, or follow a liquid fertilizer’s label for a more frequent schedule. Don’t combine these plans by default. Fertilizer supports flowering, but light, drainage and removing spent blooms also matter.

Choose one feeding schedule

For garden gerberas, UF/IFAS recommends either controlled-release fertilizer two or three times during the growing season or complete fertilizer once a month. Clemson Extension also gives the controlled-release option and describes liquid fertilizer every two weeks. These are alternatives, not a combined regimen; use the schedule and dose on your product label and adjust for your conditions.

Fertilizer type Published schedule Guidance
Controlled-release Two or three times during the growing season Garden guidance from UF/IFAS and Clemson Extension.
Complete fertilizer Monthly Recommended by UF/IFAS; UC IPM also describes monthly feeding during bloom.
Liquid fertilizer Every two weeks An option described by Clemson Extension and Wisconsin Extension. Follow the specific product label; don’t automatically add it to another full feeding schedule.

UC IPM’s page was last updated in October 2004, so treat its monthly bloom-period advice as corroboration rather than the freshest schedule. Wisconsin Extension describes incorporating slow-release fertilizer and supplementing with liquid feed every two weeks; that is a published approach, not a reason to stack extra fertilizer onto another plan.

What fertilizer should you use?

Use a complete fertilizer suitable for the setting—garden bed or container—and follow its label. Check whether it contains iron and manganese: gerberas can be deficient in both, and Clemson notes that deficiencies can occur especially in potting soil. UF/IFAS advises looking for these micronutrients in fertilizer or foliar spray.

Support flowering beyond fertilizer

Deadhead spent blooms

Remove spent flowers. Clemson Extension recommends this to promote additional flowering.

Check light and drainage

Wisconsin Extension notes that gerbera flowering relates to how much light reaches the plant’s center and advises removing excess central foliage when it blocks that light. In Florida, UF/IFAS recommends morning sun and afternoon shade. It also stresses good drainage: excess moisture can contribute to root and crown disease.

Troubleshoot yellowing or weak growth before adding more feed

Iron or manganese deficiency is one possibility, but symptoms can also relate to growing-medium pH. Check the medium and growing conditions before applying extra nutrients or making pH amendments.

Keep pH advice in context

UMass Extension’s March 31, 2025 greenhouse update gives an optimum growing-medium pH of 5.8–6.2 for greenhouse gerberas. It says pH above 6.2 can inhibit iron uptake and cause interveinal chlorosis on upper leaves; below 5.8, excessive iron and manganese uptake can cause toxicity symptoms, including purplish lower leaves with black spots. These figures are greenhouse production guidance, not a universal target for home beds or pots.

A separate NC State gerbera guide says soil pH 6.0–6.5 is desirable and advises basing amendments on a soil test. Because recommendations differ by growing system, test first rather than adjusting pH blindly.

A practical routine

  1. Choose one schedule. Select controlled-release fertilizer two or three times per growing season, complete fertilizer monthly, or a liquid product on its label-directed schedule.
  2. Check the label and ingredients. Use the stated dose and look for iron and manganese.
  3. Keep the growing conditions suitable. Provide appropriate light and well-drained soil or potting medium.
  4. Remove spent flowers and watch the plant. If leaves show possible nutrient symptoms, consider pH and growing medium before increasing fertilizer.
