Before buying it, confirm your iPad meets the operating-system requirement, your smart-home devices use a supported platform, and the app’s controls and privacy claims suit your household.
First, make sure you mean the HomePad app
The verifiable product called HomePad – Smart Home Dashboard is an app from developer Quentin Van Eylen. The available product information establishes an app, not a released Apple “HomePad” device. If you are looking for a physical Apple smart-home screen, do not assume this app listing is that product.
Check your iPad’s operating system
The developer and the US App Store listing specify iPadOS 17.6 or later for iPad. The listing specifies iOS 17.6 or later for iPhone. Check the exact device you plan to use and confirm that it can run the required version before buying or setting it aside for this dashboard. Neither source endorses a particular iPad model.

HomePad is presented as working with Apple Home/HomeKit and Home Assistant. The developer says you choose a source when you first open the app and can switch sources later in Settings. Before purchasing, verify that the household’s devices are already set up in the ecosystem you intend to use.

The developer lists controls and views for lights, switches, thermostats, blinds, locks, fans, sensors, cameras and doorbells, as well as room pages, media controls and a customizable dashboard. These are broad supported-category claims, not a guarantee that every brand or model will work. Check the needs of your actual setup rather than treating a category listing as a compatibility promise.
Decide whether its dashboard fits how you use your home
Think through which rooms, controls and information you want visible on a shared screen. The app’s listed functions include camera feeds, doorbell display and sensor monitoring; decide whether those are useful alongside your lighting, climate or media controls. If you already use Apple Home or a Home Assistant dashboard, compare the ecosystem match, iPad compatibility, layout and controls you need, and app cost before switching.

The developer’s comparison article describes a Home Assistant browser dashboard as free and customizable, while presenting a native app as a different tablet-app experience. That is the vendor’s perspective, not independent comparative testing.
Check the price and purchase model in your region
The developer describes HomePad as a one-time purchase with no subscription. The US App Store listing displayed $8.99 when checked on 2026-10-04; prices can vary by storefront and change, so confirm the current price in your local App Store listing before buying. The developer also says no HomePad account is required.

Plan a wall-mounted setup only after checking fit
The developer describes mounting an iPad on a wall and keeping it plugged in. A mount is optional: first check that it fits your exact iPad dimensions and case, and that the chosen mounting surface and installation work for your home. No particular mount or installation has been verified or tested here.
Understand the privacy and connection claims
The developer says HomeKit uses Apple’s local framework and Home Assistant connects through a local API or a remote address the user already has, with no HomePad server in between. These are the developer’s descriptions, not an independent security assessment. The App Store privacy panel says the developer reports that the app does not collect data, while noting that Apple has not verified that disclosure. Do not treat either statement as a security guarantee; review the product and platform information against your own privacy requirements.

Consider HomeKit Guard only if you need it
The developer describes an optional HomeKit Guard mode that exposes the iPad as a HomeKit camera and security system, with camera, alarm modes and triggers. Treat this as a feature claim to evaluate against your intended setup; it does not establish compatibility with every device or make an iPad necessary for your security system.
