To end one session without signing a user out everywhere, revoke the selected session in your application and invalidate its associated browser credential. Do not assume that revoking an OAuth token or sending the user through an identity provider’s logout endpoint has the same narrow effect: either can affect related tokens, grants, or other applications. The right operation depends on which session you mean.

First identify what “one session” means

A user can have several kinds of active state: a session in your application, a login session at an OpenID Provider (OP), OAuth tokens issued under an authorization grant, and sessions at other relying parties (RPs, or applications that rely on the OP for authentication). These states can be related, but they are not interchangeable.

OpenID Connect defines an RP session as the period during which an end user accesses the RP using authentication performed by the OP. The OP’s own user-agent login state is separate. See the OpenID Foundation’s OpenID Connect Session Management 1.0.

  • One application session: the user should lose access to a particular app session, while their other sessions and OP login remain active.
  • One federated device or browser session: the OP and participating RPs need a supported way to identify and terminate that session.
  • One OAuth token or grant: the goal is to stop a token, or possibly the authorization grant and its related tokens, from being used.

How the available operations differ

Operation Scope and effect Important limitation
Local RP session invalidation Ends the selected application session and its associated cookie. Does not by itself revoke OP state or sessions at other applications. (RFC 9560; OpenID Connect Session Management.)
OAuth token revocation Submits a particular token to the authorization server for revocation. May also invalidate related tokens and the authorization grant; resource-server enforcement affects when access actually stops. (RFC 7009.)
Back-channel logout with sid Lets a supported RP identify a particular OP session associated with a user agent or device. Requires provider and RP support, plus a correct mapping to the RP’s local session records. (OpenID Connect Back-Channel Logout.)
Back-channel logout without sid Signals logout for all sessions at that RP for the user identified by issuer and subject. Too broad if the goal is to terminate just one session. (OpenID Connect Back-Channel Logout.)
RP-Initiated Logout Requests that the OP log out the end user and may lead to notifications to participating RPs. It is not inherently a single-session-only command. (OpenID Connect RP-Initiated Logout.)

End one session in your own application

If the requirement is “sign this user out of this app session, but leave their OP login and other sessions alone,” start with the RP’s own session record. Select the intended record, mark it revoked, and invalidate its browser credential. RFC 9560’s RDAP logout procedure specifically calls for invalidating the HTTP cookie associated with the session so it cannot be abused before it expires; it treats local termination separately from contacting the OP or revoking tokens. See RFC 9560.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In a distributed application, ensure that every service accepting the same application session observes the revocation. Deleting a cookie in the user’s browser alone is insufficient if a server-side session or credential remains usable. The storage and propagation design is implementation-specific; the essential requirement is to clear state associated with the selected RP session.

Revoke OAuth tokens only after checking their scope

Under RFC 7009, OAuth 2.0 Token Revocation, the client sends an HTTP POST containing the token to the authorization server’s revocation endpoint. Authorization servers must support refresh-token revocation and are recommended to support access-token revocation.

Revocation is not guaranteed to stop at the submitted token. RFC 7009 says the server invalidates that token and, if applicable, other tokens based on the same authorization grant and the grant itself. Cascade behavior is a provider policy, so do not promise that revoking a refresh token ends exactly one device session unless the provider documents that behavior.

There can also be a delay before resource access stops. Revoking a refresh token can prevent future tokens from being issued from it, but an already-issued self-contained access token may continue to be accepted until it expires unless the resource server checks revocation or applies another invalidation mechanism. The outcome depends on token lifetime and resource-server enforcement.

Use sid for targeted OpenID Connect back-channel logout

OpenID Connect Back-Channel Logout lets an OP send a Logout Token to an RP’s registered endpoint. The RP validates the token, maps its issuer and subject and/or session identifier to local records, then clears state for the identified session or sessions. The sid claim identifies an OP session associated with a user agent or device. The identifier is opaque to the RP, and distinct OP sessions use different sid values.

A Logout Token must contain either sub or sid, and may contain both. When sid is absent and the token identifies the user with iss and sub, the stated intent is to log out all sessions for that user at that RP—not just one. The RP must validate the token as required by the specification and handle repeated logout notifications idempotently, treating an already-ended session as successfully handled. See the OpenID Foundation’s OpenID Connect Back-Channel Logout 1.0.

This mechanism only works when both the provider and the RP support it, and the RP has a safe mapping between validated provider identifiers and local session records. Check the provider’s current documentation and discovery metadata rather than assuming that an endpoint name or a generic logout feature guarantees session-specific behavior. The IANA OAuth Parameters registry lists relevant registered parameters; provider documentation is needed to establish that provider’s actual capabilities.

Do not treat RP-Initiated Logout as local session revocation

RP-Initiated Logout sends the user agent to the OP’s logout endpoint, normally identified by the end_session_endpoint in provider discovery. The OP is asked to log out the end user and may notify RPs through session-management, front-channel, or back-channel mechanisms supported by both sides. See the OpenID Foundation’s OpenID Connect RP-Initiated Logout 1.0.

A request can include id_token_hint to identify the end user’s current authenticated session with the client, but that parameter is not a universal instruction to revoke exactly one device session. If you only need to end one local app session, invalidate it locally and avoid OP-wide logout unless the provider documents a narrower operation. If you need to end one federated device session across participating RPs, confirm that the provider supports session identifiers and that its logout behavior has that scope.

Checks before you revoke anything

  • Confirm whether the target is an RP session, OP login session, OAuth token, or grant.
  • Identify the local session record and the browser credential tied to it; do not depend on browser-side cookie deletion alone.
  • For token revocation, check the authorization server’s cascade behavior and how each resource server handles already-issued access tokens.
  • For federated logout, verify provider and RP support, including whether a validated sid can be mapped to the intended local session.
  • Use subject-only logout only when terminating all sessions for that user at the RP is intended.
