Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Firmware controls and file-based firearm detection inspect a print job at different points. An integrated printer control can hold a job at the device until it has been evaluated; file-based detection analyzes the digital design or job before or apart from printing. Either approach can classify a file, but classification is not a legal judgment—and the available evidence does not show that either method reliably prevents firearm printing in real-world use.
3D printer firmware controls vs. file-based firearm detection: how do the approaches differ?
The key difference is where the check happens and what has authority to stop the job. An integrated control sits in the printer’s path to printing. A file detector examines the digital job, either locally or through a separate service. The two ideas can overlap: software that analyzes a file could be built into a printer, while an outside service could return a result to a printer that decides whether to proceed.
New York law defines printer-integrated blocking technology broadly as hardware, software, firmware, or other integrated measures that prevent printing unless the underlying file has been evaluated and not identified as producing a firearm or illegal firearm parts. Its definition is not limited to firmware and includes detection of STL and other CAD files as well as geometric code. Read the New York statute.
How can a 3D printer detect a firearm file?
A print job can pass through several digital forms. A design may begin as a CAD model or STL mesh, be converted into instructions for a particular printer, and then be sent as executable G-code. A detector could inspect a design representation, compare it with known patterns, or classify features extracted from the job. The 2026 proof-of-concept study discussed below examined G-code directly and also tested reconstructing a mesh from its coordinates.

These are different analysis points, not interchangeable file labels. A detector trained or designed for one representation may not inspect another unless the system converts or otherwise processes it. The code file also describes a physical object through printer instructions; it is not itself a legal ruling about the object or its maker. For background on material-extrusion printing and the role of digital and physical evidence in investigations, see the National Institute of Justice overview.
Where each approach evaluates the job
| Comparison | Printer-integrated control | File-based detection |
|---|---|---|
| Evaluation point | Within the printer’s hardware, firmware, or other integrated path; the control gates whether the printer proceeds under the New York statutory definition. | At the digital file or service stage. It may operate locally or remotely, and could be connected to a printer that enforces its result. |
| Representations covered in the cited evidence | New York’s statute includes STL files, other CAD files, and geometric code. | The 2026 study analyzed executable G-code directly or reconstructed a mesh from its coordinates. |
| Privacy considerations | Local evaluation could avoid sending a file to a cloud service, but the statute does not require local-only processing. | A cloud service may receive private or proprietary designs; this is a concern raised in AP’s reporting, not a measured outcome from a comparative trial. |
| Evasion and mistakes | The statute calls for standards addressing circumvention safeguards, but it does not establish universal effectiveness. | AP’s sources raise the possibility of altered designs evading detection and benign objects being flagged. The study result is limited to its data and setup. |
| Governance and deployment | New York establishes a standards-development process and allows for a feasibility determination. | It can be implemented as software or a service, but the cited research does not establish broad consumer-product deployment. |
What does the 2026 detection study show?
A promising result on a research dataset
A 2026 Journal of Forensic Sciences proof-of-concept study compared feature extraction directly from G-code with a method that first reconstructed a mesh from the G-code coordinates. Its best reported result was 95.80% classification accuracy for a random-forest model using mesh construction and 10-fold cross-validation. The result is reported in the study abstract.

Why that figure is not a blocking rate
That percentage describes classification performance on the study’s data under its tested setup. It does not mean that a printer would stop 95.8% of attempted firearm prints, nor does it establish performance across printers, file sources, altered designs, or benign lookalikes. The study’s data were available on request rather than publicly, and the abstract does not establish a real-world deployment benchmark.
There is also no cited head-to-head field trial showing that an integrated gate is more effective than a standalone file detector, or vice versa. The evidence supports the feasibility of analyzing G-code in a research setting; it does not prove that a consumer printer product has adopted this classifier.

Privacy, false positives, circumvention, and control
Privacy depends on where analysis runs
A local check can keep a job on the printer or the user’s computer, while a cloud-based detector may require sending the file to a service. The exact data handling depends on the implementation; integration into a printer alone does not guarantee local processing. The Associated Press describes privacy concerns about exposing private or proprietary designs when files are analyzed remotely. AP’s report also describes geometric matching—examining shape, dimensions, and structural features—as one possible detection route.
Detection can make mistakes in both directions
A detector can miss a targeted design or flag a lawful, unrelated object with similar features. AP reports concerns about both altered designs evading detection and benign objects being flagged; those are implementation risks, not quantified error rates from comparative field trials. A classification result therefore needs to be understood as a system decision about a file, not proof of what a physical object is or whether its creation is unlawful.

Opinions about readiness are not deployment evidence
AP quoted Julian Chultarsky, technical account manager at geometric-search vendor Physna, saying, “Geometric search is mature, it’s deployed, it is ready to be applied to this problem.” That is a vendor representative’s view, not an independent validation of a particular firearm-detection system. AP also quoted Rory Mir, director of open access and technology community engagement at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, saying, “These sort of censorship algorithms don’t work, and they wind up capturing and blocking a lot of lawful speech.” That is an advocacy position. Neither statement substitutes for measured field performance of a defined system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What New York’s law establishes—and what it does not
The New York statute directs a multidisciplinary working group to recommend minimum standards. The subjects include available technology, algorithm and blocking performance, safeguards against circumvention, and alignment with existing law. It also allows a finding that mandatory blocking is not yet technologically feasible. The statute therefore sets a process for standards and feasibility; it does not itself establish that a finalized standard is in force, that every printer has a detector, or that a detector works perfectly.

Keep technical detection separate from legal status. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says privately made firearms may be produced by 3D printing or other processes, and that not all privately made firearms are illegal or required to have serial numbers. Federal requirements depend on the circumstances; ATF notes detectability requirements for individuals making their own firearms and marking obligations for federal licensees. A file being identified as firearm-related does not determine whether making or possessing an item is lawful. See ATF’s privately made firearms information; this is general context, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
The same distinction matters when interpreting public numbers. ATF’s figure of approximately 45,240 refers to suspected privately made firearms reported as recovered by law enforcement from potential crime scenes during 2016–2021; ATF’s page was last updated in 2025. The figure is not a count of 3D-printed firearms. ATF says 692 of the reported recoveries involved homicides or attempted homicides.
