Microsoft says the effect depends on how many other activities are running and how much they affect the device. The gains, if any, are therefore specific to your PC, game and workload.
What Windows Game Mode does
Game Mode is a built-in Windows setting, not a hardware upgrade. Microsoft describes it as prioritizing a game’s access to system resources so it can meet performance targets more consistently. Microsoft’s developer documentation puts the key qualification plainly: “The performance increase that comes from Game Mode is directly related to the number and impact of other activities running on the device.” Microsoft’s Game Mode documentation does not give a universal FPS figure.
That makes the setting most plausibly useful when meaningful background activity competes with a game. If little else is using system resources, there may be less opportunity for Game Mode to help. This is a conditional explanation, not a promise that every busy PC will see a measurable improvement.
Microsoft’s developer API page notes that the APIs are deprecated for Windows 10 version 1809 and later. That notice concerns the documented developer APIs; by itself, it does not establish that the Windows user-facing Game Mode setting was discontinued. Microsoft’s documentation describes the developer interface, while Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance describes built-in gaming settings.

What benchmark results show
Published results vary, and individual tests should not be treated as a general prediction for other PCs.

These examples do not establish an expected percentage improvement. The results also do not prove that Game Mode always helps or always hurts. The available evidence here does not establish a broad controlled comparison across current Windows 11 builds, many hardware configurations and games, and different background workloads.

Should you turn Game Mode on or off?
If Game Mode is not causing a problem, leaving it enabled is a reasonable default. Keep expectations modest: the setting may matter more when competing activity is affecting the game, and a benchmark from a different PC cannot tell you exactly what will happen on yours.
If you suspect it changes performance, compare the setting on and off on your own PC. Use the same game and scene, graphics settings, driver, power state and background workload; repeat each run and compare average FPS as well as low-percentile FPS or frame-time consistency. This is a practical way to make the comparison relevant to your setup, not a published Microsoft benchmark protocol. Change only Game Mode between test runs so other differences do not cloud the result.

How to interpret your comparison
- If repeated runs show a consistent difference, that result is more relevant to your PC and workload than a result from unrelated hardware.
- If results are within the normal variation between runs, there may be no meaningful effect in the scene and conditions you tested.
- If performance changes only while other programs are active, the competing workload may be an important part of the result; record it and keep it consistent when comparing.
Do not infer that a small change in one game or scene will carry over to every title. The evidence supports a workload-dependent possibility, not a universal FPS uplift.
