Use a module-level error handler to decide what should happen when a specific module fails. Use scenario settings to control broader run behavior, such as retaining failed executions, processing data in order, and committing changes. They are complementary, not competing options: for example, Retry requires incomplete executions to be enabled.
How the two kinds of error handling differ
Make’s error handlers attach to modules. When a module encounters an error, its handler can intercept it and run configured logic. Scenario settings apply more broadly to execution and data handling across the scenario. Make lists five module handlers: Skip, Retry, Resume, Commit, and Rollback. Make’s error-handling overview and its scenario settings documentation describe these separate controls.
Choose a handler for the response to a particular failure; choose scenario settings for the run-wide conditions that make that response possible or determine how it affects other work.
Choose a handler based on what should happen to the failed bundle
Skip: discard a bundle that is safe to omit
Skip removes the affected bundle and allows the scenario to process subsequent bundles. It may suit occasional invalid records when dropping one will not harm the process. Because a skipped bundle can leave the run marked successful, do not use it merely to clear an error if the omitted record needs attention. See Make’s error handlers guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Resume: continue with a valid substitute output
Resume replaces the failed module’s output with a predefined value and continues the flow. Use it only when that replacement is semantically valid for every downstream module that consumes it; a value that merely satisfies a mapping is not necessarily safe for the business process. See Make’s Resume handler documentation.
Retry: retain work that may succeed later
Retry pauses the failed bundle and stores the error message, mappings, and remaining scenario flow as an incomplete execution, which can be retried automatically or manually. It is suited to temporary failures, such as a transient database connection problem, rather than data that will remain invalid on every attempt. Make requires incomplete executions to be enabled for Retry. See Make’s Retry handler documentation.

Commit: stop after an error while keeping supported prior writes
Commit stops the scenario and commits prior changes in database apps that support transactions. Make identifies transaction-supporting modules with an ACID label; without transactional support, the handler simply stops the run. See Make’s Commit handler documentation.
Rollback: stop and revert supported transactional changes
Rollback stops the scenario and reverts changes made by modules that support transactions. Its effect depends on transactional support and the scenario’s auto-commit setting. Do not assume it reverses arbitrary external API calls or other side effects outside supported transactional modules. See Make’s Rollback handler documentation.

Set scenario options to support the behavior you need
Scenario settings govern whether failed execution state is stored and how work proceeds while failures remain unresolved. In Make’s scenario settings, review these controls:
- Store incomplete executions: retains failed run state for inspection and later resolution. Retry depends on this being enabled. When storage is disabled, a failed run stops and begins a rollback phase.
- Process data in order: can pause new work while an incomplete execution remains unresolved. Consider this if processing newer bundles before repairing an earlier one could create ordering problems.
- Commit after each module: commits data after each module rather than waiting for successful completion of the entire scenario. That changes the point at which changes are committed, so account for it when deciding whether Commit or Rollback matches the intended outcome.
Make notes that incomplete-execution storage has limits; applicable limits can vary by subscription. Check the current account documentation before relying on a particular retention capacity.

Use this decision guide
- The record is invalid and safe to omit: choose Skip only if losing that bundle is acceptable and visible success will not hide a business-critical omission.
- A safe fallback can stand in for the failed output: choose Resume and validate the substitute against downstream mappings and business rules.
- The failure may be temporary or fixable: choose Retry, enable incomplete executions, and select retry timing appropriate to the upstream service.
- Earlier supported writes should remain, but the scenario should stop: consider Commit, after verifying that the relevant app supports transactions.
- Supported transactional changes must be all-or-nothing: consider Rollback after checking transaction support and auto-commit behavior; do not extend that expectation to unrelated external effects.
- An operator needs to inspect and repair failures: store incomplete executions and decide whether in-order processing should pause newer work until the earlier failure is resolved.
Check the interaction before enabling the scenario
- Identify the module that can fail and decide whether its bundle should be discarded, replaced, retried, or stopped.
- Add the corresponding handler to that module and confirm that any substitute output or retry behavior is appropriate for the downstream flow.
- Open the scenario settings and check incomplete-execution storage if you plan to use Retry or need a recoverable record for review.
- Review Process data in order if later runs must wait for unresolved failures.
- Check transaction support and Commit after each module before relying on Commit or Rollback to determine which changes persist.
These controls address different scopes: a handler defines what to do at the failure point, while scenario settings determine the run-wide storage, ordering, and commit conditions around it.
