For a general-purpose desktop on a 64-bit older PC that meets its requirements, start with Linux Mint Xfce. Choose antiX for very limited memory or 32-bit x86 hardware; consider Xubuntu for a conventional Ubuntu-based desktop, or ChromeOS Flex for browser-centered use when Google certifies your exact model. These are requirements-based recommendations, not results of comparative performance testing: the best fit depends on your computer’s processor, memory, storage, graphics, and the work you need to do.
Which lightweight operating system should you choose?
| Option | Best fit | Published requirements or important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Linux Mint Xfce | A familiar, general-purpose desktop on a 64-bit PC with enough memory and storage. | Linux Mint lists 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk space as minimums; it recommends 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk space for comfortable use. The requirements are for Mint generally, not a guarantee for every older processor or graphics chip. Supported Mint 22.x releases include Xfce and are listed through April 2029. Linux Mint FAQ; Linux Mint releases. |
| antiX | Very limited memory, older x86 hardware, or live and rescue use; a good candidate when 32-bit support matters. | The project recommends 512 MB RAM and lists 7 GB as the minimum hard-drive space for installation. antiX-26.1 offers 32-bit and 64-bit x86-compatible images. Its workflow may feel less familiar than mainstream desktop environments. antiX About. |
| Xubuntu | A conventional Ubuntu-family desktop with stated installation requirements and a USB/DVD trial option. | Requires a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor. Xubuntu lists 1 GB RAM minimum, but recommends 2 GB for running multiple applications; it lists 8.6 GB free disk space minimum and recommends 20 GB. Xubuntu download. |
| Lubuntu | A reader interested in an LXQt desktop in the Ubuntu family. | The current manual says Lubuntu has refocused from its former low-end-hardware emphasis. Treat old memory figures on its deprecated community help page as historical, not current requirements. Lubuntu Manual; deprecated Lubuntu community page. |
| ChromeOS Flex | Browser-oriented computing on a device whose exact model is certified by Google. | Google says Flex may work on many devices made in the last 10 or more years, but recommends currently certified models. Certification is model-specific; some features are not guaranteed, and support or testing may end after certification expires. Google certified-model help. |
Do not treat these figures as a speed ranking. The official requirements use different criteria, and they are not comparable cross-distribution benchmarks measured on the same computer.
Check your computer before choosing
A lighter desktop environment can reduce the operating system’s demands, but it cannot remove limits imposed by an aging processor, failing drive, unsupported graphics, or a workload that strains the machine. Before downloading, identify:
- Processor architecture: Is the computer 32-bit or 64-bit? antiX offers both x86 image types; Xubuntu requires 64-bit Intel or AMD.
- Memory: Compare installed RAM with the candidate’s minimum, and use its recommended figure where one is published. A minimum is not a promise of comfortable multitasking.
- Storage: Check free disk space, not only the drive’s total capacity. Mint and Xubuntu publish both minimum and recommended figures; antiX gives a hard-drive installation minimum.
- Graphics and display: Mint lists 1024×768 resolution. Older graphics hardware may need a suitable driver; Mint says proprietary drivers are not installed by default, though they are easy to install.
- Wi-Fi and boot support: Compatibility depends on the exact wireless chipset and the computer’s ability to boot from removable media. The published requirements do not guarantee support for every legacy device.
- Your normal workload: A system used mainly for basic tasks has different demands from one running many browser tabs, video calls, or several applications together.
How the main options differ
Linux Mint Xfce: balanced general desktop
Mint Xfce is a sensible first try if you want a familiar desktop and your PC can meet Mint’s published baseline. Mint lists 2 GB RAM, 20 GB disk space, and 1024×768 resolution as minimums, and recommends 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk space for comfortable use. Its FAQ says Linux Mint LTS releases receive five years of support; the releases page lists Mint 22.x through April 2029 and Mint 21.x through April 2027. Check the release page for the status of the specific edition you plan to install.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Older graphics hardware deserves particular attention: proprietary drivers are not installed by default, although Mint says they are easy to install. Meeting the memory and storage figures alone does not establish that a particular graphics chip or processor will perform well.
antiX: for scarce memory or 32-bit x86
antiX is the clearest fit here when RAM is very limited or the computer has a 32-bit x86 processor. The project recommends 512 MB RAM and requires at least 7 GB of hard-drive space for installation. Its antiX-26.1 images, dated 29 September 2026, cover 32-bit and 64-bit x86-compatible computers. The project also supports live and rescue use.

That low-memory guidance does not mean every task will feel responsive: browser-heavy or otherwise demanding work can still be constrained by the machine. The desktop workflow may also be less familiar if you are accustomed to a mainstream Windows-style environment.
Xubuntu: Ubuntu-family desktop with a live trial
Xubuntu requires a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU. Its download page lists 1 GB RAM as a minimum and recommends 2 GB for running multiple applications; it calls for at least 8.6 GB of free disk space and recommends 20 GB. Its recommendation is more useful than the minimum if you expect to keep several programs open.

Xubuntu says you can try it from a USB or DVD. That makes it a practical option for checking whether basic hardware works before installing, although a live session will run more slowly than an installed system.
Lubuntu: light LXQt, but avoid outdated requirements
Lubuntu remains an LXQt-based lightweight Ubuntu option, but its current manual says the project has refocused from its former role as a distribution for low-end hardware. An older community help page labels itself deprecated and unmaintained, so its old hardware figures should not be presented as current requirements. If you are considering Lubuntu specifically for a very old PC, verify the current release’s requirements rather than relying on those legacy numbers.

ChromeOS Flex: browser-centered and model-dependent
Flex is worth considering if most of your computing happens in a browser and your exact computer model appears on Google’s certified-model list. Google says it may work on many devices made in the last 10 or more years, but age alone does not establish compatibility. The certification list is specific to model names and numbers, not just a manufacturer or product family. Similar-looking variants can have unexpected issues, some features are not guaranteed, and support or testing may end after certification expires.

A live session can reveal whether the computer boots the system and whether essential devices—especially Wi-Fi, display, keyboard, and trackpad—work. It is a compatibility check, not a reliable performance benchmark: running from removable media is slower than running from an installed system.

- Choose a candidate and check its current download page. Confirm architecture and requirements before downloading an image.
- Prepare removable media. Xubuntu’s installation documentation describes using a USB stick or SD card with at least 2 GB to write its ISO. Check the selected system’s current instructions; you may be able to use media you already own.
- Back up important files. Do this before changing partitions, setting up dual boot, or replacing the installed operating system. Installation risks and recovery steps vary by computer.
- Boot from the USB or DVD and test your essentials. Check wireless networking, display, sound, input devices, and the applications you rely on.
- Decide whether to install only after checking the results. If a key device does not work or the live session cannot meet your needs, do not assume installation will fix the problem.
When an operating-system change is not enough
If an older computer still feels slow, the cause may be failing hardware or a workload that exceeds its capabilities rather than the operating system alone. A compatible SSD or RAM upgrade may be worth investigating, but compatibility is specific to the computer. Before buying parts, check its supported memory, storage interface and form factor, and whether the component is replaceable. No upgrade guarantees a particular performance improvement.
