JSON Schema validation checks whether a JSON value meets structural constraints declared in a schema. Use it to verify payloads at system boundaries—such as API requests, configuration files, or exchanged data—but not as a substitute for authorization, truth checks, or business rules. The JSON Schema project lists Draft 2020-12 as its current specification; your validator must support the dialect and vocabularies your schema uses.
What JSON Schema validation checks
A JSON Schema is a JSON document whose keywords describe constraints on instance data. A compatible validator interprets those keywords at the relevant locations in a JSON value. The Draft 2020-12 Validation specification defines successful validation in terms of satisfying every applicable assertion.
Common constraints include the value’s type; object properties and required properties; array item rules; numeric bounds; string lengths and patterns; allowed values; and logical combinations of conditions. For example, an object schema can require a string-valued email property and disallow an amount below zero. The exact behavior depends on the keywords and dialect in use.
The project’s specification index identifies Draft 2020-12 as current and separates the standard into Core and Validation documents. “Current” describes the project’s specification index as checked on October 4, 2026; it does not mean every validator or deployed schema has already adopted that draft.

Validate the schema and the data separately
There are two distinct checks. First, check that the schema document is valid under the meta-schema for its dialect. Second, check each JSON instance against that schema. A schema can itself be malformed or use constructs your chosen implementation does not support, even before you test application data.
The Core specification says a schema resource must validate against its meta-schema, which constrains the syntax of available keywords. The $schema keyword identifies the meta-schema—and therefore the dialect—that interprets the schema. See the Draft 2020-12 Core specification.

A practical validation workflow
- Choose the dialect. Set
$schemato the intended dialect URI. Draft 2020-12 is the project’s current version, but an existing integration may require an older draft. - Write the structural constraints. Define required properties, types, bounds, allowed values, and other rules that the receiving system needs to enforce.
- Choose a compatible validator. Confirm support for the draft and vocabularies in your schema. Do this before sharing a schema between systems or languages.
- Validate the schema during development and CI. This catches invalid schema documents before they are relied on in production.
- Test representative instances. Include examples expected to pass and fail so you can verify that the constraints express the intended contract.
- Handle validation results in the application. Inspect the validator’s error details and translate them into useful messages or rejection behavior for your users and systems.
- Check optional behavior and trust boundaries. In particular, verify how the implementation handles
format, references, untrusted schemas, and resource limits.
When JSON Schema is a good fit
Use JSON Schema when producers and consumers need a shared, language-independent description of JSON structure and repeatable checks against it. It is useful for catching malformed API payloads near an interface, checking configuration before an application uses it, and documenting data exchanged across services. A schema can also be shared among systems, provided their validators support its dialect and vocabularies.
It is not a complete business-validation system. A structurally valid account identifier does not prove that the account exists; a valid request does not prove that its caller has permission; and validation of one record does not establish a rule spanning several records. Add those application-level checks separately.

What to check when choosing a validator
- Draft and vocabulary support: Confirm that the implementation handles the schema’s declared dialect and every vocabulary it uses, including Draft 2020-12 if applicable.
formatbehavior: Determine whether format checking is annotation-only or enforced as an assertion, and whether that behavior is enabled in the implementation.- Errors and integration: Assess whether the validator’s error details work for your language, runtime, and application needs. The available implementation documentation shows language-specific APIs, not a comparative ranking of error quality.
- Security controls: Consider who controls schemas and referenced resources, how references are loaded, and what resource limits apply. There is no universal secure configuration established here.
- Performance: Measure your own schemas and payload workload. The cited sources do not provide a comparable performance benchmark or establish a fastest validator.
As examples rather than a complete or ranked catalog, Ajv’s JSON Schema documentation describes multiple draft versions and notes that Draft 2020-12 cannot run in the same Ajv instance as earlier drafts. The Python jsonschema validation documentation describes its validation API and warns about risks from untrusted schemas, especially when paired with untrusted instance data. Check the current documentation for the implementation and version you deploy.
Why format may not reject invalid values
A schema keyword named format is not, by itself, a guarantee that every validator will reject a value that does not match the format. Draft 2020-12 distinguishes the format-annotation vocabulary from the format-assertion vocabulary. Full format validation is not guaranteed unless assertion semantics are in use and implemented. If your application depends on strict checks for a particular format, verify the relevant vocabulary and validator configuration rather than relying on a schema’s appearance alone. Security considerations for untrusted schemas
A schema supplied by an untrusted party deserves security review, particularly if the same party also controls the data being validated. The Python jsonschema project explicitly warns that this combination can create vulnerabilities. Treat schema loading and references as part of your trust boundary: review how external resources are resolved and constrain resource use according to your environment. The warning does not define a universal threat model or a single mitigation suitable for every implementation.
