Choose cable Link if you want a physical connection and your play area can accommodate a tether; choose Air Link if you want to move without a cable and your Wi-Fi performs reliably where you play. Both connect a Quest headset to PC VR. Meta warns that wireless network degradation can cause dropped frames and lag, but its available documentation does not establish a universal winner for latency, image quality, or reliability.
How Link Cable and Air Link differ
Meta Quest Link connects a Quest headset to PC VR using either a USB cable or Air Link over Wi-Fi. The practical difference is the connection: cable Link physically tethers you to the PC, while Air Link streams PC VR over your wireless network. Meta describes Air Link as using the wireless network to stream PC VR content to Quest in a 2022 developer post: Meta’s Air Link overview.

When cable Link is the better fit
Pick the wired connection when you prefer not to depend on Wi-Fi for the PC-to-headset stream, do not need unrestricted movement around the play area, or want to use a physical connection. The cable is also a practical choice if your wireless network is inconsistent in the room where you play. These are setup-based reasons to choose it, not evidence that cable Link always has lower latency or better image quality.
Choose the right cable
A charge-only cable is not enough: Link requires a data-capable USB-C cable. Meta’s developer hardware guidance recommends a cable supporting 5 GB/s or higher for improved performance and names the Meta Horizon Link Cable as its recommended option. That guidance does not say Meta’s cable is the only compatible choice.

When Air Link is the better fit
Choose Air Link if avoiding a physical tether matters more than having a wired connection. Because it streams over Wi-Fi, the quality of the wireless connection where you play matters. Meta specifically warns that wireless network degradation can affect Air Link with dropped frames and lag. That is a possible failure mode, not a guarantee that Air Link will perform poorly on every home network.

Does one have better latency or image quality?
The available Meta material does not provide current controlled measurements directly comparing cable Link with Air Link for latency, image quality, or reliability. There is therefore no supported universal performance winner to name. A cable avoids relying on Wi-Fi for the stream; Air Link removes the physical tether but makes wireless network conditions relevant. Which trade-off matters more depends on your setup and priorities.
Meta reported in a March 6, 2024 developer post that Link supports a 120 Hz refresh rate for PC VR titles with Quest 3, configurable in the Meta Quest Link app. This is a dated capability statement, not a comparison between cable Link and Air Link; check current software documentation before relying on it as present-day guidance. Check headset and PC compatibility
Meta’s device comparison lists Meta Quest Link by cable or Air Link for Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest Pro. Product and software support can change, so confirm support for your exact headset and PC using Meta’s current Quest comparison.
Meta’s Unity developer requirements page says Link is compatible with Windows 10 or higher. Because that statement is in development documentation, it should not be treated as a complete current consumer PC requirements list. The consumer minimums and current Air Link Wi-Fi requirements are not established by the cited material. Check Meta’s Unity development requirements and current Meta support information for your specific setup.

Make the choice for your setup
