Choose UUIDv7 when UUID-standard compatibility and existing UUID database or API support matter most. Choose ULID when its 26-character Crockford Base32 text form is useful and your stack handles that separate format well. Both put a 48-bit Unix-millisecond timestamp first in a 128-bit identifier, so both offer time-oriented sorting; neither guarantees strict generation order just because its timestamp is first.
What is the difference between UUIDv7 and ULID?
UUIDv7 is a UUID version specified by the IETF in RFC 9562, published in May 2024. ULID is a separate identifier format described by its canonical specification. Both are 128 bits and begin with a 48-bit Unix timestamp in milliseconds. Their main practical differences are standards and ecosystem fit, text encoding, and how generators handle identifiers created in the same millisecond.
| Decision point | UUIDv7 | ULID |
|---|---|---|
| Format and ecosystem | UUID version defined by IETF RFC 9562 | Separate format defined by the canonical ULID specification |
| Bit layout | 48-bit Unix-millisecond timestamp; 74 remaining bits after version and variant bits, available for randomness and optional monotonicity features | 48-bit Unix-millisecond timestamp followed by 80 random bits |
| Common text representation | UUID text conventions, commonly 36 characters including hyphens | 26 Crockford Base32 characters |
| Same-millisecond ordering | Optional methods, such as counters, monotonic random data, or additional timestamp precision; behavior depends on the implementation | Basic format does not guarantee same-millisecond order; the specification describes a monotonic factory that increments the random portion |
| Binary representation | RFC 9562 discusses binary storage as an alternative to verbose UUID text | 16-octet big-endian layout |
Do UUIDv7 and ULID sort chronologically?
Both have a timestamp at the high-order end, so their values can be ordered by time at the millisecond-prefix level. That is useful when an application needs identifiers that broadly follow creation time rather than appearing randomly distributed.
But a shared millisecond does not establish which identifier was generated first. The ULID specification explicitly says same-millisecond sort order is not guaranteed by the basic format. It describes a separate monotonic factory that increments the random component for identifiers created in that millisecond. RFC 9562 allows UUIDv7 implementations to use counters or additional timestamp precision to provide more monotonicity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Neither approach alone promises strict global generation order across processes or machines. If the application depends on exact order, check the library’s guarantees for concurrent generation, batches, clock rollback, and counter or random-component overflow. Clock synchronization and generator behavior remain relevant even when identifiers contain timestamps.
Which is better for database IDs?
Neither format is universally faster in databases. Time-ordered identifiers can improve index locality compared with random identifiers, because nearby-time inserts tend to land in nearby key ranges. RFC 9562 notes that random UUIDv4 inserts can be scattered across B-tree indexes and says real-world index-locality differences can be an order of magnitude or more. That is general guidance about time-ordered locality, not a direct UUIDv7-versus-ULID benchmark.

Choose the representation your actual database and application can handle efficiently. UUIDv7 may fit naturally if your database column types, serializers, validators, and APIs already expect UUIDs. ULID may suit systems that benefit from a compact sortable string. UUID text is verbose relative to the underlying 128-bit value; binary storage may be appropriate where your stack supports it. ULID also has a 16-octet big-endian binary layout.
- Check native column types, encoders, decoders, validators, serializers, and language-library support rather than assuming either format is supported end to end.
- For ULID text, verify case handling, parsing, and database collation. Lexical ordering only helps when stored and compared consistently.
- Benchmark the target database, index, storage representation, identifier generator, insert mix, and concurrency. A format-level comparison cannot predict application performance.
How should you choose a generator?
For UUIDv7
Confirm whether your library implements a monotonic method or simply uses the timestamp and random payload. If it uses a counter or another monotonicity technique, check how it handles rollover and clock regressions. RFC 9562 advises applications requiring absolute monotonicity to handle counter rollover deliberately.

For ULID
Distinguish the canonical encoding from the optional monotonic factory: ULID text by itself does not guarantee same-millisecond order. Check the selected library’s behavior when multiple generators are active, the monotonic component overflows, or the clock moves backward.
Test the guarantees you actually need
- Generate batches within one millisecond and verify the ordering your application expects.
- Exercise concurrent generation, including separate processes if that reflects deployment.
- Review documented behavior for clock rollback and counter or random-component overflow.
- Confirm that the identifier parses, sorts, and round-trips through every database and API boundary.
What privacy information do these IDs reveal?
Both formats expose a timestamp component, so an identifier can reveal approximate creation time. Consider whether that information is sensitive when IDs appear in URLs, logs, exports, or client-facing APIs. Do not rely on either format alone as a secret or access token. The exact timestamp handling and randomness depend on the generator implementation.

Which one should you use?
- Prefer UUIDv7 when standard UUID conventions, UUID-native interfaces, or existing database and library support are decisive.
- Prefer ULID when a 26-character Crockford Base32 sortable string is useful and your database, APIs, and libraries support ULID consistently.
- Decide by testing when strict same-millisecond ordering or database performance matters: evaluate the specific generator and storage path rather than inferring guarantees from the format name.
