PS5 image-quality modes are priorities, not fixed specifications: Performance modes generally favor smoother motion, while Resolution or Quality modes favor visual detail. The exact frame rate, render resolution, effects, and available modes depend on the game. A PS5 sending a 4K signal does not necessarily mean the game rendered every frame at native 4K; it may upscale a lower-resolution image.
What Resolution and Performance modes change
PlayStation describes Performance Mode as making motion smoother and Resolution Mode as providing higher graphic quality. Those labels indicate what a game is prioritizing, not a universal resolution or frame-rate target. They apply only to games that support the relevant presets, and a title may use different names or offer additional choices.
Performance typically prioritizes a higher or smoother frame rate. Resolution, Quality, or Fidelity modes typically prioritize image detail or other visual settings. A game might also include a balanced or ray-tracing mode, and its choices can combine frame-rate targets with effects in different ways. Check the actual menu rather than assuming that every PS5 game has the same two options.
Compare the tradeoffs that matter
- Motion: Check the mode’s target or achieved frame rate and whether it remains stable in demanding scenes.
- Rendering and reconstruction: Look for whether render resolution is fixed or dynamic, what upscaling is used, and whether the image stays stable in motion.
- Visual features: Note which settings actually change, such as ray tracing, lighting, shadows, reflections, or detail.
- Your display: VRR and 120 Hz can affect the available experience, but both the game and display must support the relevant feature.
Output resolution is not the same as render resolution
Output resolution is the video signal the console sends to the TV or monitor. Render resolution is the resolution at which the game creates its image before any upscaling. A 4K output signal describes the connection to the display; by itself, it does not establish that the game rendered each frame at native 4K.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
PlayStation says the console detects the connected TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available output resolution. 4K output requires a compatible 4K screen and an output setting of Automatic or 2160p. The game’s internal rendering and reconstruction are separate from that console output setting.
What upscaling and dynamic resolution do
Upscaling takes an image rendered at a lower resolution and reconstructs it for a higher-resolution output. It can help a game balance visual quality and frame rate: rendering fewer pixels can reduce workload, while reconstruction produces an image for the display’s output resolution. The tradeoff can include reduced clarity or visual artifacts.

In its 2025 technical discussion of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft used a 1080p-to-2160p example to explain PSSR upscaling. That is an illustration from that discussion, not a claim that all PS5 games render at 1080p before outputting 4K.
Dynamic resolution scaling varies a game’s render resolution in response to workload. In demanding scenes, a game can lower the resolution before upscaling to help balance performance and visual fidelity. The image may therefore be rendered at different resolutions from scene to scene.

PSSR and QSSR
PSSR means PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an upscaling technology discussed for PS5 Pro. In March 2026, Sony reported that an upgraded version was rolling out to named supported games. Support depends on the game and can change with updates; it is not a universal option in every title.
QSSR means Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026, as a performance tier of AI upscaling for PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use it and offer it as an additional graphics option. Its availability is title-specific, not a setting to expect in every PS5 game.

Why the same mode label can mean different things: Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro illustrates why the game-specific details matter. CD Projekt Red describes these targets and features for this title; they are not standard PS5 mode specifications.
| Mode | What CD Projekt Red describes | Display condition |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Focuses on the highest possible frame rate; can reach up to 90 fps with VRR. | Up to 90 fps is specified with VRR. |
| Ray Tracing | Includes selected ray-tracing enhancements and targets 60 fps. | No additional display condition stated in the source. |
| Ray Tracing Pro | Activates all listed ray-tracing enhancements and targets 40 fps on high-frame-rate VRR displays, or 30 fps otherwise. | The 40 fps target depends on a high-frame-rate VRR display; otherwise the stated target is 30 fps. |
These examples show why it helps to compare the settings and display requirements listed for the particular game, rather than infer what a mode name guarantees.

How to choose a mode and check your PS5 settings
Start with the game’s own graphics menu: choose the mode that fits your preference for motion, detail, and visual effects. If the game offers VRR or 120 Hz features, your display must support them too. Sony notes that VRR results vary by TV, so compatibility alone does not guarantee identical results across displays.
- Set a console game-mode preference if you want one. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets and choose a preference where supported. This is a preference for compatible games, not a replacement for a game’s own graphics menu.
- Check the console’s video output. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Automatic selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports. For 4K, use a compatible 4K display and Automatic or 2160p.
- Confirm game and display support. Check the game’s settings and your TV or monitor specifications for VRR or 120 Hz support; the console setting alone cannot add support the game or display lacks.
If 4K at 120 Hz is not working
First confirm that the TV supports 4K at 120 Hz, check that its firmware is current, and connect the console to the appropriate HDMI 2.1 port. Review the PS5’s output settings as well. Sony recommends using the included cable where possible; if you need a replacement, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K at 120 Hz. A cable is a connection requirement when the existing one is unsuitable, not an image-mode upgrade.
