Evaluate an AI tool on one defined game-development task, using representative project material and a non-AI baseline. Keep it only if its output quality, correction burden, data handling, rights, cost, and fit with your studio’s workflow meet requirements you set in advance. A tool that helps draft code may be unsuitable for confidential source code, production assets, or an AI feature that interacts with players.

Start by defining the task

“AI for game development” covers different jobs, with different failure costs. The 2025 Game Developers Conference (GDC) report identifies coding assistance, concept art and 3D model generation, and repetitive task automation among the uses developers mentioned. Other possible tasks include debugging, writing, moderation, and runtime behavior, but each needs its own evaluation.

Write a one-sentence task definition before comparing tools. For example: “Suggest fixes for compiler errors in a local Unity prototype,” or “Generate placeholder concept images from prompts that contain no unreleased story details.” Specify who will review the result and what counts as an unacceptable failure.

Development-time assistance is not the same as shipped AI

A tool used by developers during production raises questions about project access, staff review, data retention, and rights. An AI feature shipped inside a game adds player-facing concerns: reliability during play, moderation and safety, privacy, and how the feature behaves when inputs are unexpected. Evaluate those as separate systems, even if both use generative AI.

Compare tools against your actual workflow

Use a small, representative trial rather than a broad promise of productivity. Give each candidate the same task, comparable context, and the same review standard. Include routine work as well as a realistic difficult case; a polished demo or one successful output does not establish production reliability.

  1. Choose a representative task. Use work the team genuinely expects to do, such as resolving a known class of errors or producing placeholder concepts. Exclude confidential material until you have verified the tool’s data controls.
  2. Record the non-AI baseline. Note the usual completion time, review effort, and common defects for the task. Do not treat a faster first draft as a productivity gain if it creates more rework later.
  3. Run matched trials. Keep the task and acceptance criteria consistent across tools. Record how often results are usable, how much correction is required, and whether outputs vary substantially between attempts.
  4. Have a qualified person review outputs. Review code for correctness and security, assets and text for suitability and rights concerns, and automated QA findings against actual behavior. Do not put unreviewed output directly into a release build.
  5. Test the handoff. Check whether results can be inspected, edited, reviewed, and tracked through the existing editor, source-control, build, and approval processes.
  6. Decide in advance what would stop adoption. Examples include unacceptable data use, repeated high-impact errors, excessive review time, or terms the studio cannot accept.

Unity describes editor integrations that can accept context through drag-and-drop and help resolve console errors. That is a vendor description of its integration, not an independent usability or productivity benchmark. Verify the specific feature and workflow available to your team rather than assuming an integration will behave the same across tools or versions.

Use a scorecard that reflects the project

Compare candidates on evidence from the trial and on documented terms. Weight the criteria according to the work: a solo developer testing disposable prototype code may accept different trade-offs from a studio handling unreleased assets or licensed content.

Evaluation area Questions to answer Evidence to collect
Task coverage Does the tool address the specific task, or is the feature only adjacent to it? Outputs on representative tasks and the share that meet your acceptance criteria.
Engine and workflow fit How does it receive context? Where does it operate? Can staff inspect and review its result in the editor and existing pipeline? Observed handoffs, integration steps, and workflow changes during the trial.
Quality and reproducibility Are results correct, suitable, and consistent enough for the intended use? Acceptance rate, defects, variation between attempts, correction time, and rework compared with the baseline.
Data controls What prompts, code, assets, project context, and interactions leave the studio? Are they retained or used to improve models? Can administrators disable features or opt out? Current product terms, settings, administrator controls, and the vendor’s stated data practices.
Rights and policy Do terms and contracts address inputs, outputs, training, and the intended use? Do platform rules or internal policies impose limits? Applicable service and engine terms, team agreements, platform requirements, and studio policy.
Total cost and continuity What are the usage or subscription charges, setup and review time, integration work, and consequences if a feature or service changes? Current pricing and terms, staff time, dependencies, and a fallback workflow.
Team impact Is use optional or restricted? Do staff know what is allowed and how to raise a concern? Clear policy, responsible decision-makers, and a route to report quality, data, or rights issues.

Do not collapse the scorecard into one impressive-looking quality score. A high acceptance rate cannot compensate for a data practice or rights term the studio cannot accept. Set minimum requirements for those risks first, then compare the tools that pass.

Check what project information the tool uses

Before entering project material, find out what information the service receives and what happens to it afterward. Ask specifically about prompts, source code, assets, documents, editor context, and user interactions; a general statement about “data” may not answer questions about each category. Confirm whether information is retained, used to improve models, or shared with subprocessors, and whether those practices differ by feature, account type, or administrator setting.

Unity says its “Improve Unity AI” setting is off by default. Unity also says enabling it can allow Developer Data to improve models for answers, code, and agentic actions, while that data is not used to train generative asset models. These statements describe Unity’s policy and do not establish how another provider handles data. Check the current terms and settings for the exact service and account your team plans to use.

For sensitive projects, make data handling a gate rather than a weighted preference. If you cannot establish what leaves the studio or how it may be used, do not send confidential material until the uncertainty is resolved. A trial using public, synthetic, or otherwise approved material can still help evaluate workflow and output quality.

Read the applicable rights and platform terms

Check the provider’s terms, team and contractor agreements, rights in inputs and outputs, and any platform rules before using a tool in production. An engine’s terms do not automatically govern a separate AI service, and one provider’s restrictions should not be generalized to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, Epic’s supplemental terms for Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) restrict training generative AI programs on Developer-Made Content, subject to specified exceptions. Those exceptions include localization corrections and feedback explicitly directed to Epic’s assistant. This is a UEFN-specific example, not a statement of terms for other Epic products, other engines, or other AI providers. Review the terms that apply to the actual tool and project.

Record the decision in a form the team can follow: which tools and tasks are approved, what content may be supplied, what review is required, and who can approve an exception. If the provider’s terms change, the studio should know who is responsible for reassessing the approval.

Budget for more than the subscription

Estimate the full operating cost: usage or subscription charges, setup, staff time spent prompting and reviewing, integration and maintenance, and any rework caused by poor outputs. Include a fallback plan for a service outage, feature change, or price change. A tool that is inexpensive per request may still be costly if it adds review or pipeline work.

Keep engine licensing separate from AI-service pricing. As one engine-cost example, Epic’s licensing page states that qualifying Unreal Engine game products owe a 5% royalty on lifetime gross revenue directly attributable to the product above $1 million; revenue from sales through the Epic Games Store is royalty-free. That is an engine licensing term, not an AI-tool fee, and should not be added to an AI subscription comparison as though the charges were the same.

Set policy around the team’s real risks

Studio policy should translate the evaluation into day-to-day decisions. State whether use is optional or restricted, which tasks and content are permitted, what must receive human review, and where staff should take concerns. Make rules specific enough that developers, artists, writers, QA staff, and contractors can act on them without guessing.

Industry survey results show why a studio should not assume a shared consensus. In GDC’s 2025 report, 52% of surveyed developers worked at companies where generative AI tools were used, and 36% said they personally used them, up from 31% in the previous year. The report says 64% of surveyed developers’ companies had some form of internal generative-AI policy, up from 51% in 2024; among respondents at AAA studios, the figure was 78%. These are reported survey results, not universal measures of studio practice.

The same GDC report says 13% of respondents viewed generative AI as having a positive impact on the industry, while 30% viewed it as negative. It also says 1,500 developers shared concerns for the 2025 survey. These results describe a divided set of respondents, not a verdict on whether a particular tool is suitable for a particular project.

Google’s report titled AI Meets The Games Industry reports that 90% of game developers were already using AI in their work, 63% expressed concerns about data ownership, and 35% worried about player-data privacy. Its publication year and survey methodology are not stated in the version available here, so those figures should not be compared directly with GDC’s results or treated as current prevalence estimates.

Make a project-specific adoption decision

There is no evidence here to support a universal product ranking or a general claim that AI improves game-development productivity. Choose based on the task, trial results, applicable terms, and the studio’s risk tolerance. A passing result for placeholder concept exploration does not approve the same tool for confidential code, and approval for development assistance does not validate an AI system shipped to players.

Keep a short record of the approved use, trial evidence, data and rights review, accountable owner, and date to revisit the decision. Recheck policies and terms when the tool, account settings, project, or service changes; do not assume an earlier approval covers materially different conditions.
