For safer WordPress maintenance, keep automatic background minor and security updates enabled, then decide plugin and theme auto-updates item by item. Before relying on automation, make sure you can restore a current backup. Check Dashboard > Updates and Tools > Site Health regularly: a selected toggle does not guarantee an update ran successfully.
Which WordPress update settings should you change?
Core updates and plugin or theme updates are separate controls. WordPress documentation says most capable installations apply minor and security releases in the background. Keep those enabled unless you have a specific operational reason not to and someone is actively handling updates another way. WordPress background updates documentation
Plugin and theme automatic updates are controlled separately for each installed item. WordPress introduced the dashboard controls in version 5.5. Enable them selectively based on the site’s recovery readiness and the importance of each extension to key site functions. WordPress plugin and theme auto-updates documentation
How to enable plugin and theme auto-updates safely
- Confirm recovery first. Make a current backup of both the site files and database, and verify that you know how to restore it. - Review plugins. Open Plugins > Installed Plugins. Use the per-plugin automatic-update control for items whose updates you are prepared to recover from; the Plugins screen also supports bulk selection. Do not treat bulk enablement as a substitute for considering compatibility and business impact.
- Review themes. Open Appearance > Themes, select a theme, and use its automatic-update control where available. Consider the theme’s role in the site’s presentation and whether a change could disrupt important pages or functions.
- Check status after enabling. Review Dashboard > Updates, owner email notifications, and Tools > Site Health so failed attempts or other update problems are not overlooked. WordPress Dashboard Updates documentation
How to decide which extensions to update automatically
WordPress recommends keeping plugins and themes current for security, but its documentation does not establish a universal plugin-by-plugin rule. Use these practical factors rather than turning every toggle on by default:

- Exposure time: If you leave updates manual, consider how long the site might remain on an outdated version before someone acts.
- Compatibility and impact: Consider whether a change to the extension could interrupt essential site functions or business operations.
- Recovery readiness: Prefer automation only when a recent backup exists and the restore procedure is usable.
- Monitoring capacity: Decide whether someone can review notices, inspect Site Health, and respond if an update fails.
- Operational control: A host or plugin may override or disable dashboard controls, so confirm that the setting is available and working on your installation.
How WordPress auto-updates work—and what to monitor
WordPress says plugin and theme auto-updates run twice daily by default. The schedule relies on WordPress Cron, and WordPress sends email notifications about successful or failed attempts. - Check the WordPress version and controls. Plugin and theme auto-update controls were introduced in WordPress 5.5. On a newer installation, a host or plugin may have disabled them. WordPress plugin and theme auto-updates documentation
- Read Site Health findings. Go to Tools > Site Health and look for background-update failures, inability to communicate with WordPress.org, outdated PHP, or pending plugin updates. WordPress Site Health documentation
- Check whether WordPress Cron can run. Plugin and theme auto-updates depend on WordPress Cron; a configured toggle cannot make a scheduled task run if that mechanism is not functioning as expected. WordPress plugin and theme auto-updates documentation
- Confirm WordPress.org connectivity. WordPress needs to reach WordPress.org to check for and install updates. If Site Health reports a communication problem, investigate the site’s hosting or network configuration.
- Use the documented dashboard status. Check Dashboard > Updates and the owner email account for notices of successful or failed attempts. WordPress Dashboard Updates documentation
