The best LDAP alternative depends on what the application actually needs. If it can use a modern sign-in protocol, assess direct OpenID Connect (OIDC) or SAML integration first. If it must continue to bind, search, or write through LDAP, use a service or bridge that explicitly supports those operations—and verify its compatibility with the app. Replacing an authentication endpoint alone does not migrate directory data or authorization rules.

Which LDAP alternative fits your application?

Start by separating two cases: an app that can authenticate through a modern identity protocol, and one that requires an LDAP directory interface. The first can often move to an identity provider without preserving LDAP for that app. The second needs a compatible LDAP endpoint or another explicitly supported bridge.

Approach Best suited to Main consideration
Direct OIDC or SAML integration Apps that already support these protocols or can be modified Configure the app and identity provider, map claims or groups, and test both sign-in and authorization. Microsoft recommends considering apps that already use SAML or OpenID Connect early in a migration. Microsoft’s application migration guidance
Microsoft Entra Domain Services LDAP- or AD-dependent workloads that can reach a managed domain Plan identity synchronization and network access, and check whether the app’s required AD behavior and write operations are supported. Microsoft’s LDAP architecture guidance
Okta LDAP Interface Some legacy LDAP applications where the documented interface meets the app’s needs Confirm supported commands and limitations for the particular application before migration. Okta’s LDAP Interface documentation
Identity broker such as Keycloak or Auth0 Apps that can use supported federation protocols, or architectures that need enterprise identity connections Check the intended integration, deployment and operational requirements. Auth0 documents enterprise connections including Active Directory/LDAP, OIDC and SAML; that does not establish identical behavior across all directory features. Auth0’s enterprise identity provider documentation
Protocol-specific bridge or proxy Older applications that cannot be modernized immediately Choose a bridge that supports the application’s actual protocol. Microsoft Entra application proxy is not an LDAP endpoint. Microsoft’s secure hybrid access documentation

Modernize the application when it can use OIDC or SAML

OIDC and SAML let an application delegate user sign-in to an identity provider rather than bind directly to LDAP. The app must support the chosen protocol, either already or after configuration or code changes. You also need to decide how identity attributes and group or role membership become claims or application permissions; successful login by itself does not prove that authorization is correct.

Microsoft’s migration guidance describes integrating line-of-business apps using OAuth 2.0, OIDC or WS-Federation as app registrations, and custom SAML 2.0 or WS-Federation apps as enterprise applications. Keycloak likewise documents support for OAuth 2.0, OIDC and SAML where an application’s technology stack supports them. Keycloak’s Securing Applications and Services Guide, version 23.0.7

Keep LDAP compatibility for applications that require it

Microsoft Entra Domain Services

Microsoft Entra Domain Services provides a managed domain with LDAP and other AD DS-related capabilities, including domain join, Group Policy, Kerberos and NTLM for workloads connected to its virtual network. Identity is synchronized from Microsoft Entra ID. This can suit a legacy workload that needs directory access but does not make every application’s AD assumptions compatible automatically. Check the required LDAP operations, writes, attributes and network path against the managed-domain design. Microsoft’s LDAP architecture guidance

Okta LDAP Interface

Okta describes its LDAP Interface as translating LDAP commands into Okta API calls. Treat it as a product-specific compatibility option, not a guarantee of full Active Directory behavior. Validate the commands and directory features the application actually uses against Okta’s current documentation and your own test environment. Okta’s LDAP Interface documentation

Identity connections through Auth0

Auth0 documents enterprise identity connections that include Active Directory/LDAP, OIDC and SAML. Whether this fits depends on the app’s integration model and the connection behavior needed; a documented enterprise connection should not be read as a promise that every LDAP-dependent application can use Auth0 as a drop-in LDAP server. Confirm the current service, plan and setup requirements for the intended architecture. Auth0’s enterprise identity provider documentation

Do not mistake an application proxy for an LDAP service

Microsoft Entra application proxy supports Kerberos and header-based authentication, but Microsoft lists LDAP among the unsupported protocols. It therefore cannot directly replace an LDAP endpoint for an application that binds to a directory. Microsoft’s cloud-first guidance describes alternatives such as provisioning users and groups back to on-premises Active Directory or repointing the application to Entra Domain Services, depending on the architecture. Check compatibility before choosing a replacement

Document what the application does with the directory, not just how it signs users in. Microsoft warns that LDAP writes, hard-coded organizational unit (OU) locations and less common AD functionality can complicate migration to Entra ID or Entra Domain Services. Those dependencies may require continued AD write capability, a bridge, application changes or a decision to retire the application. Microsoft’s cloud-first identity guidance

  • Bind behavior: Does the app bind as each user, use a service account, or both?
  • Directory reads: Which searches, attributes and filters are required at sign-in and during normal operation?
  • Writes: Does the app change passwords, user attributes, groups or other directory objects?
  • Authorization: Which groups or roles control access, and how are they represented in the replacement?
  • AD assumptions: Does the app depend on fixed OUs, domain join, Group Policy, Kerberos, NTLM or other AD-specific behavior?
  • Network and ownership: Where does the app run, what directory endpoints can it reach, and who will operate synchronization, bridges and identity configuration?

Plan a migration in stages

  1. Inventory each app. Record its current sign-in method, LDAP searches and writes, required attributes, group or role dependencies, AD assumptions and network location. Microsoft’s cloud-first identity guidance highlights these compatibility considerations. Read the guidance
  2. Check for a modern integration. Ask the vendor about OIDC or SAML support, or assess whether the application can be changed. Microsoft recommends considering SAML- and OpenID Connect-based applications early in migration planning. Read the migration stages
  3. Select a compatibility path only for apps that need one. Verify the required LDAP operations and AD behavior against the selected managed service or bridge. Do not treat Entra application proxy as an LDAP endpoint. Check its supported protocols
  4. Test outside production. Use a test instance or tenant where practical. Compare authentication behavior and verify that expected groups and authorization rules work before switching users. Microsoft’s migration guidance recommends test validation
  5. Track what remains unresolved. Keep outstanding writes, data dependencies and application-specific assumptions visible. Changing the authentication endpoint does not itself move directory data or reproduce application authorization.

Make the decision by application, not by vendor

For each app, first establish whether it can use OIDC or SAML. If so, compare the integration effort and claim or group mapping with the cost of keeping LDAP dependencies. If it cannot change, determine whether it needs read-only lookups, writes, or particular AD features, then evaluate a managed domain or documented LDAP interface against those exact needs. Where neither path fits cleanly, a protocol-specific bridge, application change or retirement may be more realistic than a nominally simple endpoint swap.
