Windows’ default-printer setting selects a device; it does not set a universal duplex or page-flipping default. The exact controls depend on your printer, driver, and app.
Set the printer Windows should use
In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. If you want to keep a specific printer selected, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer, select your printer, and choose Set as default. When Windows manages the default, it may choose the last printer you used instead.
In Windows 10, the documented path is Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners. Select the printer, choose Manage, then select Set as default. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; this setting path is separate from that lifecycle status. Microsoft’s default-printer instructions cover both Windows versions.
Choose two-sided printing in the app
Print options are commonly set for a print job or through the selected printer’s preferences, rather than through one Windows-wide duplex setting. In Microsoft Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, 2021, 2019, or 2016:

- Open the document and choose File > Print.
- Under Settings, open Print One Sided.
- If available, choose Print on Both Sides.
- Choose a flip-edge option if Word or the printer’s settings offer one.
Microsoft Support calls printing on both sides of paper “duplex printing.” In Word, the presence of Print on Both Sides indicates the selected printer is set up for duplex printing. Microsoft’s Word duplex instructions explain the app-level choices. Other apps may put them elsewhere or use different labels.
You can also open the selected device’s Printer preferences or Printing preferences and look for duplex or two-sided printing options. The names and available controls vary by driver, so there is no single dialog path that applies to every printer.

Choose the flip edge that matches the layout
| Option | Typical use | What to check |

| Flip sheets on long edge | Often suits portrait pages that should turn like a book. | Check that the reverse side is upright when you turn the page along its long edge. |
| Flip sheets on short edge | Can suit pages that turn over the top edge, including some calendars or landscape layouts. | Check that the reverse side is upright when you turn the page along its short edge. |
These are layout guides, not rules for every document. Preview the front and back, or print a small test before sending a long document. Microsoft’s Publisher guidance likewise recommends checking the two sides and changing the flip choice if the reverse is not upright. See Microsoft’s Publisher postcard instructions.
If duplex or flip-edge options are missing
- Confirm the selected printer. Installed printers can have different capabilities, and an app may be set to a different printer than Windows’ default.
- Check the printer’s specifications. Consult its manual or manufacturer to confirm that it supports automatic duplex printing.
- Check its setup and driver. Windows supports many printers out of the box, but an additional or updated driver may be available through Windows Update. Printer-specific software may expose options not shown in an app’s basic print screen. Microsoft’s printer setup guidance describes adding printers and drivers.
- Account for the print platform. Windows 11’s modern print platform is designed to work with Mopria-certified devices, while traditional driver setups can expose different controls. Microsoft’s overview of the Windows modern print platform explains the distinction.
Use manual duplex if the printer cannot print both sides automatically
If the printer lacks automatic duplex, Word can print odd-numbered pages first and even-numbered pages afterward. The paper must be reloaded between passes, and the correct orientation depends on the printer. Test with a short document and check which way the printed pages face before printing a large job. Microsoft’s Word duplex guidance covers manual duplex printing.
