Then check the trunk inventory and configuration path. An absent stored outbound trunk may be irrelevant if the application supplies trunk settings inline; inbound provider calls also depend on a matching dispatch rule. The available LiveKit documentation does not establish that restarting LiveKit deletes trunk records.
1. Identify the deployment, restart, and call direction
Write down which component restarted: a LiveKit Cloud agent or worker, a self-hosted LiveKit server, the self-hosted SIP service, or your application. Also confirm the project or environment involved and whether the affected call is inbound or outbound. These details determine whether to inspect Cloud trunk inventory, inbound routing, outbound configuration, or self-hosted service startup settings.
- LiveKit Cloud: check the correct project and its SIP trunk inventory.
- Self-hosted SIP: check the SIP service’s active startup configuration and its connections to LiveKit and Redis.
- Inbound: verify the provider trunk and the dispatch rule that routes calls.
- Outbound: determine whether the application expects a saved trunk ID or sends trunk configuration with each request.
2. Check the trunk inventory and ID
For third-party provider trunks in LiveKit Cloud, open Telephony → SIP trunks in the intended project, or list trunks with the LiveKit CLI. The official telephony testing guide recommends these commands:
lk sip inbound listlk sip outbound list
Use the command matching the affected call direction. Compare the listed trunk ID with the ID your application uses, and make sure the application is sending its request to the intended project. LiveKit’s troubleshooting guide says an “object cannot be found” 404 can mean the trunk ID identifies an object that does not exist or is inaccessible. Check both the ID and project context rather than assuming the restart removed the trunk.

3. For outbound calls, distinguish saved trunks from inline settings
LiveKit supports two outbound configuration paths. A stored outbound trunk is a long-lived configuration object that the application references by ID, commonly through sip_trunk_id. Alternatively, an application can provide outbound trunk settings inline on each CreateSIPParticipant request using its trunk parameter.
- If the application uses a stored trunk: confirm that it appears in the outbound inventory and that the request contains the correct trunk ID.
- If the application uses inline settings: an outbound trunk entry need not appear in the stored inventory. Inspect the request-building code and the values sent with the call.
LiveKit describes stored trunks as long-lived configuration objects that it caches and reuses. That documentation does not establish that a restart should delete a stored trunk.

4. For inbound calls, verify both the trunk and dispatch rule
For a third-party SIP provider, inbound routing needs more than a trunk record. Confirm that the inbound trunk exists, that the intended phone number is associated with the provider trunk, and that a dispatch rule matches that trunk and routes calls as expected. A trunk can appear present while calls still fail because the dispatch rule is missing or does not match.
LiveKit Phone Numbers are an exception: LiveKit’s inbound guide says they do not require an inbound trunk. Do not apply the third-party provider trunk checklist to that call path without first confirming how the number is configured.

5. If self-hosted, check the SIP service’s active configuration
For a self-hosted deployment, inspect how the SIP service starts and which configuration file it actually loads. LiveKit’s self-hosting documentation shows the service being launched with a livekit-sip --config=... argument; verify that the path and file are the expected ones after the restart.
- Check the active SIP service command and configuration file.
- Confirm the configured Redis address is reachable from the SIP service.
- Confirm the configured LiveKit WebSocket URL is correct and reachable.
- Check firewall and network access for SIP signaling on port
5060and media ports10000–20000, the values specified in LiveKit’s self-hosting guide.
These checks address service startup, connectivity, and call media. They are not evidence that a trunk record is automatically temporary or is deleted by a restart.

6. Use the failing request or call to narrow the fault
API reports an unknown-object 404
Check that the request uses the intended trunk ID and project context, and that the object is present and accessible there. A stale ID or access to the wrong project can produce an object-not-found result.
Outbound trunk is listed, but the call fails
Follow the request and provider evidence: confirm the API request succeeds, then check the provider endpoint, authentication, and transport settings. Review provider logs and SIP responses; use a packet capture (PCAP) if needed to see the exchange on the network.

Inbound call does not reach LiveKit
Determine whether the provider’s SIP INVITE reaches LiveKit. If no INVITE arrived, LiveKit’s troubleshooting guide says the problem is upstream of LiveKit; inspect provider logs and provider-side trunk routing. If the INVITE does arrive, continue with the inbound trunk association and dispatch-rule match.
