Set proxy variables or product-specific proxy settings before launching the coding agent—but first confirm that the agent supports your proxy protocol. Proxy behavior is not universal: Anthropic says Claude Code does not support SOCKS proxies, GitHub Copilot documents HTTP proxy support with its own variable precedence, and the official OpenAI material reviewed does not establish Codex CLI proxy support.
Start by identifying which process needs the proxy
A coding setup can involve several separate network clients: the agent itself, an editor extension, a sandboxed terminal, package managers, and tools launched by you. Configuring one does not guarantee that the others will use the proxy. Identify the process that is failing, then use that product’s documented settings and check whether sandbox rules add another layer.
For many applications, the starting point is setting environment variables before launching the process. This is only a starting point, not proof of compatibility: supported variable names, priority, protocols, authentication, and certificate handling vary by product.

Claude Code
Anthropic’s Claude Code corporate-proxy documentation describes using HTTPS_PROXY and HTTP_PROXY for HTTP and HTTPS proxy configuration. It states, “Claude Code does not support SOCKS proxies.” The same page says NO_PROXY is not currently supported, so do not rely on that variable to bypass the proxy for selected hosts.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For basic authentication, the documented approach embeds credentials in the proxy URL. Avoid putting passwords in checked-in scripts or shared configuration files; use a trusted secret store or managed launcher where available. Anthropic recommends an LLM Gateway for advanced authentication methods such as NTLM or Kerberos.
If your network inspects TLS, Claude Code documents SSL_CERT_FILE and NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS for specifying a custom certificate bundle. The proxy page may change over time, so confirm its current guidance when setting up a new installation.

GitHub Copilot in an editor
GitHub documents basic HTTP proxy setups for Copilot. It checks these environment variables in this order: HTTPS_PROXY, https_proxy, HTTP_PROXY, then http_proxy. The highest-priority URL is used for both HTTP and HTTPS requests. A proxy address beginning with https:// is not currently supported by the documented setup. See GitHub’s network-settings documentation for details.
For editor-specific setup, follow GitHub’s instructions for configuring proxy settings for Copilot in an IDE, including the relevant VS Code or JetBrains settings. GitHub documents basic authentication and Kerberos; Kerberos may require an installed system library and an active ticket.

For TLS inspection, Copilot uses certificates in the operating-system trust store and certificates supplied through NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS. GitHub warns that ignoring certificate errors can create security issues. A custom root certificate also means trusting its issuer, so obtain it through your organization’s approved IT process. See GitHub’s network troubleshooting guidance.
GitHub Copilot CLI sandbox
Copilot CLI’s sandbox has a separate proxy policy described in its CLI command reference. Do not assume editor settings fully describe sandboxed command traffic.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- macOS: The sandbox sets proxy environment variables. Only programs that honor those variables use the proxy.
- Linux: The sandbox enforces access through a private network namespace. The proxy endpoint must be reachable over IPv4, and credentials cannot be embedded in the proxy URL.
- Windows: The documented sandbox proxy policy is not supported.
These restrictions apply to the described Copilot CLI sandbox, not to every Copilot request or other coding agents.
OpenAI Codex CLI
The official OpenAI sources reviewed do not establish a Codex CLI proxy configuration, SOCKS support, certificate mechanism, or sandbox proxy behavior. OpenAI’s API CLI reference discusses HTTP and SOCKS proxies in its own CLI context and rejects HTTPS proxies in the stated mTLS context; that is not evidence of Codex CLI behavior. OpenAI’s self-hosted sandbox documentation names outbound endpoints but does not provide proxy settings. Verify Codex-specific behavior with current Codex documentation rather than transferring settings from a different OpenAI tool.

Apply proxy settings safely
- Find the right settings surface. Use the environment, editor setting, or sandbox configuration documented for the process that needs access.
- Set the documented proxy URL and variables. Confirm the required scheme, hostname, port, variable capitalization, and precedence. Do not assume that SOCKS,
NO_PROXY, or lower-case variables are supported. - Handle credentials securely. Use only authentication methods the product supports, and avoid storing passwords in scripts or shared configuration. For Copilot CLI’s Linux sandbox, credentials in the proxy URL are not allowed.
- Configure TLS trust if needed. Install the organization’s CA through an approved process and use the application’s documented trust mechanism. Do not make disabled certificate checking a routine workaround.
- Restart the affected process. If it reads environment variables only at startup, changes will not apply to an already-running editor or agent.
Test and troubleshoot the connection
- Check the proxy path independently. Where your network policy permits, test endpoint reachability directly and through the proxy. GitHub gives this Copilot-specific example, replacing the proxy address and port with your own:
curl --verbose -x http://YOUR-PROXY-URL:PORT -i -L https://copilot-proxy.githubusercontent.com/_ping. GitHub says a successful check returns HTTP 200. The endpoint is for Copilot; do not treat it as a general proxy test target. - Check protocol and authentication. Confirm that the agent supports the proxy type and that the credentials or authentication mechanism match the product’s documentation.
- Check certificate trust. If TLS inspection is in place, verify that the required organizational CA is trusted by the agent through its supported certificate path.
- Check policy and sandbox limits. A timeout or connection reset can point to proxy authentication, firewall or proxy allowlists, TLS trust, or sandbox network restrictions. For Copilot CLI, also check the operating-system-specific constraints above.
- Retest from the failing process. A successful standalone request does not prove that an editor extension, agent, or sandboxed tool uses the same settings or network path.
