Use USB tethering when one compatible computer can connect conveniently by cable. Choose a Wi-Fi hotspot when the receiving device needs to stay wireless or several devices need internet access. The right choice also depends on your phone, computer, cellular signal and carrier plan; Google does not publish a head-to-head performance comparison that establishes a universal winner.
How Android hotspot and USB tethering differ
Both methods share your Android phone’s mobile-data connection with another device. With a Wi-Fi hotspot, the receiving device joins the phone’s wireless network. With USB tethering, you connect the phone and receiving device with a cable, then enable tethering in the phone’s settings. Google says most Android phones can also share mobile data over Bluetooth, though that is a separate option from the two compared here. Google’s Android setup guide covers these methods and their requirements.
Which option fits your situation?

How to connect with a Wi-Fi hotspot
- On the Android phone, turn on Hotspot in Quick Settings. To open its settings, press and hold the Hotspot control.
- If needed, use the hotspot settings to check or change the network name and password. Keep the hotspot password-protected rather than choosing an unprotected network.
- On the device that needs internet, open its Wi-Fi settings, select the phone’s hotspot network and enter the password.
How to use USB tethering
- Connect the Android phone to the receiving device with a USB cable that fits both devices and supports data, not just charging. Google’s general instructions do not specify a connector type or cable model.
- On the phone, open the Hotspot and tethering settings and turn on USB tethering. Menu names and locations can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- If the receiving device is a Mac, use a supported wireless method instead: Google’s Android guidance says USB tethering does not work with Mac computers.
Does a hotspot use mobile data?
Yes. Both Wi-Fi hotspot and USB tethering share the phone’s mobile-data connection, so activity on the connected device can use your plan’s data. Check your carrier’s tethering rules and any charges before relying on either method; Google notes that carrier limits and fees may apply. The hotspot device limit is also not a guarantee that every plan or phone supports that many simultaneous connections.
Speed, reliability and battery: what is established
Google’s setup guidance does not compare Wi-Fi hotspot and USB tethering for speed, reliability, latency or battery use. It therefore does not support a blanket claim that one method is faster, more stable or more efficient. Results and convenience can depend on the phone, receiving device, cellular signal, cable and configuration.

Google recommends plugging devices in while tethering, turning the connection off when it is no longer needed and using automatic hotspot shutoff if the phone provides it. These are practical power-management steps, not evidence that USB always saves battery or Wi-Fi always uses more.

Google also documents instant hotspot and automatic Wi-Fi sharing for supported personal devices. Availability depends on Android version and manufacturer, and the features require the same Google Account and cross-device services. Samsung devices may behave differently.
