For most fintech dashboards, use a narrowly scoped API or read-oriented serving layer when it improves authorization, protects the transaction system, or controls connection load. A trusted backend or BI service can connect directly to a database when its identity and network controls are strong and the database can meet freshness and concurrency needs. Decide from measured workload evidence—not from a blanket rule that APIs are always safer or direct connections are always faster.
The choice is not strictly binary: connection pooling, replicas, caching, imports, hybrid models, and precomputed aggregations can change the tradeoffs. First be precise about which boundary you are comparing.
What counts as a hosted query API or direct database access?
“Hosted query API” can describe different things: a vendor-managed database API, an application-owned service exposing a limited query contract, or a database proxy that pools connections. Direct database access means a backend or BI client connects using the database protocol rather than calling an application-facing API.
That distinction is about the connection path, not simply whether a database is involved. An application API may query a database behind the scenes; a proxy may pool direct database connections. Supabase’s Postgres connection guide illustrates several separate paths: frontend clients can use REST or GraphQL Data APIs with Row Level Security (RLS) enabled, persistent backends can use direct connections, serverless or edge workloads can use a transaction pooler, and BI tools can use a session pooler.

| Connection pattern | Where it fits | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Scoped application API | A client or dashboard needs only a defined set of queries or data. | Whether authentication, tenant and account authorization, query limits, and logging are correctly implemented. |
| Direct database connection | A trusted backend or BI service connects with the database protocol. | Credential scope, network reachability, identity propagation, connection capacity, and query load. |
| Database proxy or pooler | An application needs database-protocol access but benefits from managed connection reuse. | Runtime compatibility, pool mode, driver settings, and the provider’s documented constraints. |
Direct access from a controlled server or BI gateway is materially different from putting privileged database credentials in a browser or other untrusted client. An API boundary can help limit what a client can request, but its presence alone does not prove that access is secure.
How do the options affect dashboard freshness and latency?
Live queries
A live-query design can expose source changes without waiting for a periodic model refresh, but each dashboard interaction may trigger work against the source. In Power BI DirectQuery, data is not imported when the model loads; visuals send one or more queries to the underlying source. Microsoft says visual refresh latency depends on the source and on network or gateway overhead. Source changes appear after an action that requeries the data, so “live” does not mean every open visual updates continuously.
Measure the full path: connection acquisition, API or gateway overhead, network time, database execution, and the dashboard’s own refresh behavior. Test representative visual interactions at expected peak concurrency, and inspect p95 and p99 latency as well as averages. A design that performs well for one user may not hold up when many viewers refresh at once.

Imported or precomputed data
Power BI Import mode reads data into a cached model. That can reduce repeated interactive queries to the source, but the model reflects source changes only after refresh. Microsoft’s guidance says “Use import by default”; treat that as Microsoft product guidance, not a universal rule for every fintech dashboard or BI tool. Import may be unsuitable where the full dataset is impractical to ingest or the dashboard’s freshness requirement is tighter than its refresh process can provide.
Aggregations and hybrid options can combine approaches, depending on the BI product, connector, and licensing. The useful question is not simply “Is it live?” but “How old can the displayed data be, and what event causes it to be queried or refreshed?”
Where should authorization and tenant isolation happen?
Choose the boundary at which the end user’s identity is authenticated and enforce account and tenant access there. Then trace that identity through the service path to the data. The right answer depends on whether the dashboard talks to an API, a BI gateway, or another trusted service; none of those labels substitutes for reviewing the actual policies and credentials.

- For frontend access to Supabase Data APIs: Supabase requires RLS to be enabled, with policies that permit the intended access. Check the policies against real user and tenant cases rather than assuming the API itself separates customers.
- For direct connections: keep credentials on a trusted backend or BI service, scope them to the required data and actions, and decide explicitly how end-user identity and tenant restrictions are enforced downstream.
- For either pattern: review network controls, credential handling, authorization tests, and audit logging. An API can narrow an exposed contract, but it is not automatically secure; a direct connection can be appropriate when its access path and controls are deliberate.
These are architecture considerations, not a determination of which legal or regulatory controls apply to a particular fintech. That depends on the organization, jurisdiction, data, and deployment.
How should connection pooling match the runtime?
Connection strategy should reflect how the application creates and reuses connections. Supabase recommends direct connections for persistent backends, shared transaction pooling for serverless or edge workloads with many short-lived connections, and session pooling in some IPv4-only and third-party-client cases. Those recommendations and limits are provider-specific; they should not be treated as universal connection rules.

Pooling addresses connection management; it does not by itself make expensive queries cheap or guarantee that the database can serve the dashboard’s peak workload. Monitor connection acquisition and database execution separately so a pool bottleneck is not mistaken for slow query performance.

Read replicas and serving stores
Separating analytical reads from transaction writes can protect the operational system from repeated scans and searches. AWS’s banking-core reference architecture describes replicating transaction data in real time to a secondary database suited to scanning and searching, then streaming data to downstream applications and analytics. It is an example of workload isolation, not a guarantee of a particular replication lag or dashboard freshness. Define and measure the acceptable lag in the system you deploy.
Query caching
Cloudflare Hyperdrive documents connection setup near Workers, pooled connections near the origin database, and optional caching for non-mutating read queries. Caching can reduce origin load and response time, but Cloudflare states that writes do not invalidate cached read results. If a user must see a transaction they just made, route freshness-sensitive reads around the cache or implement an explicit invalidation strategy; otherwise, the dashboard may show a cached view after the write succeeds.

Aggregations and hybrid designs
Dashboards often repeat the same filtered totals and summaries. Consider precomputing those aggregates, serving them from a read-optimized store, or combining imported and live data where the BI platform supports it. Each change introduces a freshness contract: specify which data is delayed, by how much, and how users can tell whether a view includes a recent transaction.
How can you choose an architecture for your dashboard?
- Set a data-age target. Define the maximum acceptable age for each important dashboard view. Distinguish when a source transaction commits from when the dashboard refreshes or its model updates.
- Map the trust boundary. Identify the client, API, backend, BI service, pooler, database, and any replica or cache. Record where user identity is checked and how account and tenant restrictions apply along the path.
- Test realistic interactions under load. Benchmark representative queries and visual refreshes at expected peak user concurrency. Track p95/p99 latency and separate connection acquisition, cold starts, gateway or API overhead, network time, and database execution.
- Check the query workload against the transaction system. If repetitive analytics compete with writes, evaluate aggregates, a read replica or secondary serving store, import, or a hybrid model instead of assuming the primary database should answer every dashboard query.
- Write down consistency behavior. Decide whether users need read-after-write visibility. Document any replication delay, refresh schedule, cache lifetime, and cache invalidation or bypass path.
- Estimate operational ownership and cost. Include API maintenance, pool sizing, monitoring, failover, replication, dashboard limits, and refresh infrastructure. Compare estimates against the actual service plan and workload; there is no established generic cost winner.
A common starting pattern is to keep privileged database access on a trusted backend, expose only the dashboard data it needs through scoped endpoints, and route heavier analytics to a read-optimized store or governed semantic model. Use direct access when the controlled service’s identity, network, capacity, and operational design meet the measured requirements.
What does the platform guidance establish—and what does it not?
- Microsoft Power BI: Microsoft recommends import by default and identifies DirectQuery for cases such as frequently changing data, impractical full ingestion, source-enforced security, or sovereignty constraints. Import, DirectQuery, hybrid options, aggregations, and Direct Lake have different behavior; capability and refresh details depend on mode, connector, and licensing.
- Supabase and Postgres: Supabase documents Data API, direct connection, shared session and transaction poolers, and dedicated pooler methods. Its frontend Data API guidance requires RLS, and its transaction-mode pooler has the prepared-statement limitation described above. Confirm current project-specific options before adopting a path.
- AWS banking architecture: The reference pattern separates transaction records from query-oriented scanning and analytics through replication and downstream streaming. It demonstrates one workload-isolation approach, not a universal design prescription.
- Cloudflare Hyperdrive: Its documentation describes edge connection setup, origin-side pooling, and optional read caching; it also warns that writes do not automatically invalidate cached reads.
These sources do not provide a like-for-like benchmark showing that a hosted query API or direct database access is faster, safer, or cheaper for fintech dashboards in general. The decision depends on the actual workload and implementation controls.
