Choose a hosted query API by testing it against your workload and controls—not by its “fintech” label or SQL compatibility alone. Compare query handling, identity and permissions, data movement, performance, cost, and operating burden, then run a proof of concept with representative data and peak concurrency. The available evidence supports an initial shortlist of Snowflake, Google BigQuery, and ClickHouse, but not a neutral overall winner.

Start with the workload, not the vendor

Write down what the API must serve before comparing products. Internal analyst queries, scheduled reports, embedded customer dashboards, and risk or fraud workflows can have very different latency, freshness, isolation, and concurrency needs.

  • Query pattern: scheduled or interactive; typical joins, filters, and aggregations; and the range of query complexity.
  • Service objectives: acceptable freshness and staleness, plus target p50 and p95 latency. Include p99 if a small number of slow responses would materially affect users.
  • Scale: data volume and growth, peak concurrent users and requests, and expected throughput.
  • Isolation: which customers, teams, or services may see which rows, columns, or datasets.
  • Failure behavior: what the application should do when queries time out, are throttled, return partial results, or cannot reach a data source.

For customer-facing analytics, concurrency, tenant isolation, interactive latency, and predictable cost deserve particular attention. A July 2026 MotherDuck article raises these as decision factors, but it is vendor-authored rather than a neutral comparison.

Which candidates merit an initial evaluation?

Snowflake SQL API Snowflake documents a REST interface for SQL execution and management, including statement status checks, cancellation, result partitions, and concurrent result fetching. [c000] [c001] Check supported statement patterns, authentication, network policy, result handling, and measured latency and cost for your configuration.
Google BigQuery BigQuery documents API and third-party integrations, OAuth access tokens, IAM-controlled connection resources, and federation to supported external systems. [c003] [c006] [c007] Validate the required region and integration, IAM design, federation performance, temporary data movement, and cost.
ClickHouse ClickHouse markets financial-services use cases including real-time event, payment, fraud, AML/KYC, and capital-markets analytics, and describes customer-cloud and BYOC deployment choices. These are vendor claims, not independent benchmark results. [c005] Confirm the exact managed offering, operating model, regional availability, security evidence, support terms, and performance using a representative workload.

Check the query API and application fit

A service that accepts SQL is not necessarily interchangeable with another query API. Examine the whole request lifecycle and verify it with the framework, driver, and deployment you intend to use.

Trace a query from submission to result

  • How is a request submitted, and does the API return a result immediately or require polling?
  • Can the client check status and cancel work that is no longer needed?
  • How are large results paginated, partitioned, or fetched concurrently? What are the result-size limits?
  • What do timeouts, rate limits, and errors look like? Which failures can safely be retried, and is there a documented idempotency mechanism?
  • Which SQL statements and session operations are supported, and which have special handling or limitations?

Snowflake documents statement submission, status checks, cancellation, and partitioned results, with some statement types and session operations handled specially or limited. Verify that its documented behavior matches your application’s query patterns. [c000] [c001]

Verify the actual client path

Check for a maintained client or driver for your application stack and test its connection pooling, timeout, and retry settings. BigQuery supports direct API integrations and ODBC/JDBC paths for tools that need them; that does not guarantee that every generic SQL client behaves identically across providers. Test the specific integration rather than relying on a compatibility label. [c003]

Prove that identity and access controls work end to end

Map every application actor—service, analyst, administrator, and, where relevant, customer—to the identity it uses and the minimum permissions it needs. Test enforcement at query time, not just access to the API endpoint.

  • Can you enforce the required tenant boundaries and row- or column-level restrictions?
  • How are credentials issued, stored, rotated, and revoked? What happens to active access after revocation?
  • Which query, administrative, and access events are logged, and who can review them?
  • Can production services use separate least-privilege identities rather than shared credentials?

BigQuery documents OAuth tokens and IAM controls on who may use a connection resource. It also describes connection credentials as encrypted and securely stored in its connection service. These are documented product features, not a complete assessment of security for a particular deployment. [c003] [c006]

For fintech data, request current, product- and region-specific evidence on certifications, contractual commitments, encryption and key management, residency, retention and deletion, subprocessors, incident response, business continuity, and audit-log retention. Which regulations apply—and whether a specific configuration meets legal or contractual requirements—depends on the business, jurisdiction, data, and use case. Have security and legal teams review the actual deployment.

Understand where data lives and what federation moves

If a query reaches data outside the primary warehouse, identify the connector and source types involved, where each system is located, the network path, and what data is copied or temporarily materialized. “External data” is not one uniform capability: supported sources, security controls, and behavior differ.

For BigQuery federation, Google documents connections to supported external systems and describes federated queries as potentially slower than queries against native BigQuery storage. The query is read-only against the external source, and results are temporarily moved to BigQuery. Check supported types, regional proximity, permissions, and any separate encryption configuration for your case. [c007]

BigQuery also documents external data sources that can be queried directly, with fine-grained table security options. Confirm the exact source type and control set you need rather than assuming these options behave the same as federation. [c010]

Benchmark performance and cost on representative work

A vendor’s general performance or fintech positioning cannot tell you how your configuration will behave. Build a proof of concept using realistic schemas, query distributions, data sizes, access policies, and peak concurrency. Include failure cases, not just successful requests.

Measure the factors that affect users and operators

  • Cold and warm response times, including p95 and p99 latency.
  • Throughput, queueing, and behavior as concurrent requests rise.
  • Freshness from ingestion to query, including any delay users will see.
  • Retries, timeouts, cancellations, and recovery when a source or connection fails.
  • Bytes scanned or processed, network egress, and cross-region movement where applicable.
  • Operational effort for tuning, monitoring, and controlling spend.

Compare prices only for the exact service tier, region, deployment, and usage pattern under consideration. No comparable current pricing or standardized performance-test data is established here. ClickHouse markets low-latency and high-concurrency financial-services use cases, including payments and fraud analytics; treat those claims as hypotheses to test against your data and service objectives, not as independent benchmark evidence. Assess portability and who will operate the service

Estimate how much of the application would need to change if you switched providers. Compare SQL dialects, API contracts, drivers, data formats, identity integration, and export paths. Similar SQL syntax or a supported driver does not, by itself, make migration straightforward: APIs and operational behavior can still differ. [c001] [c003]

Assign ownership for ingestion, schema evolution, query tuning, capacity planning, incident response, backups, upgrades, and cost controls. Include the people and support model required to run the system in the total-cost assessment. MotherDuck’s July 2026 discussion identifies operations and cost as selection considerations for customer-facing analytics, but does not provide a neutral cross-vendor cost study. [c008]

Use a proof-of-concept decision gate

Set acceptance criteria before comparing results so that a polished demo or a single fast query does not decide the choice for you.

  1. Specify the workload: record representative query shapes, data volume, freshness target, peak concurrency, tenant model, and latency objectives.
  2. Build the real access path: use the intended client or driver, production-like service identities, least-privilege permissions, and relevant network and regional settings.
  3. Test the difficult cases: exercise large results, cancellation, timeouts, retries, throttling, access revocation, and source or connection failures.
  4. Measure each candidate consistently: use the same data, query mix, concurrency pattern, and success criteria; record cost and operational work alongside latency and throughput.
  5. Review governance and operations: confirm that security, legal, and platform owners accept the evidence and operating responsibilities for the specific deployment.
  6. Choose against the requirements: reject candidates that miss a hard requirement, then weigh the remaining trade-offs rather than declaring a universal winner.
