A spare phone can work well for short-term, basic indoor monitoring if it has a working camera, supported software, reliable power and Wi-Fi, and an app you have tested. For long-term use, outdoor placement, dependable night vision, or coverage that needs to keep working through network or power problems, a dedicated camera is usually the better fit—but its features depend on the model.
How the two options compare

When a spare phone is a sensible choice
Use a phone for a temporary, indoor check—such as watching a room or checking on a pet—if the device is in good condition and you can accept a fixed view and some hands-on maintenance. A typical arrangement runs a camera app on the spare phone and uses another device as the viewer. The exact capabilities depend on the app; test live viewing, event detection, and recording before relying on it. See eufy’s setup guide and SpareCam’s service guidance for examples.
Check the phone before setting it up
- Confirm that the camera works and the operating system is still supported by the app you plan to use.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is stable, there is enough storage for the intended recording method, and you have a separate viewing device if the app requires one.
- Mount the phone securely with a useful view; do not block its camera or airflow.
- If it will stay plugged in, use a suitable charger and cable. Keep the phone ventilated, away from direct sunlight and fabric, and do not use it if the battery is swollen, damaged, or unstable.
- Test live view and at least one event or recording, then check where footage is stored and how long it is retained.
An older phone may no longer receive operating-system security updates. Check its support status and avoid exposing an unsupported device unnecessarily.
When a dedicated camera is the better fit
Choose a dedicated model if the camera will stay in service for a long time, needs to operate outdoors, or must cover darkness or a broader area. Manufacturer guides from eufy and Aqara describe examples of purpose-built features such as night vision, weather resistance, local or cloud recording, smart-home integration, and camera movement or detection. These are examples, not features every Wi-Fi camera includes.

Verify the details that matter for your setup
- Placement: Check the exact indoor or outdoor rating and installation requirements.
- Darkness and coverage: Confirm the night-vision method and whether the camera has the field of view, movement, or tracking you need.
- Recording: Establish whether it records locally, to the cloud, or both; check retention, account needs, and any subscription requirements.
- Support and privacy: Review security-update information, permissions, and where footage is processed or stored.
- Power and network: Confirm what happens when power or internet access is lost rather than assuming the camera keeps recording.
What happens without internet or Wi-Fi?
Local recording and remote viewing are separate capabilities. An app may be able to record to the phone or local storage without internet, while access from elsewhere may require an internet connection or a service-specific relay. Network setup also matters. SpareCam, for example, describes a LAN-only mode for devices on a usable shared local network and a separate cloud-assisted path for viewing from different networks. Its service documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, describes SpareCam as an Android closed beta; these details apply to that service and may change, not to phone-camera apps generally. A Wi-Fi camera is not automatically resilient to outages either. Arlo’s support documentation, updated April 9, 2026, says its Go 2 model VML2030 can use LTE where Wi-Fi is weak or absent and can switch to LTE if Wi-Fi internet access becomes temporarily unavailable, subject to settings and cellular coverage. That is a documented feature of this model, not a general property of Wi-Fi cameras. See Arlo’s Go 2 connectivity guidance.

Choose by the job, not the product category
- Temporary indoor check: A healthy spare phone may be adequate if you test its app and can provide safe power and a stable connection.
- Long-term monitoring: Favor a dedicated camera after checking how long the manufacturer supports it, how recordings are retained, and what power it needs.
- Outdoor placement or complete darkness: Choose a model explicitly rated for the location and equipped with the night-vision method you need; a bare phone is not an equivalent outdoor product.
- Weak Wi-Fi or outages: Look specifically for cellular connectivity, local recording, and battery backup. Verify each capability separately; one does not guarantee the others.
- Privacy-sensitive indoor use: Compare storage location, cloud or account involvement, security-update policy, and permissions. Consider whether you can physically disable or cover the camera when it is not in use; neither category is inherently safer.
