Contact providers early, confirm which company serves the new address, and get the effective dates in writing. A transfer does not necessarily close the old account, and some providers may keep service active at both addresses during a move.
Make a separate plan for every utility
Electricity, natural gas, water and sewer, trash, and internet or phone service may have different providers and different rules. Check each service individually rather than assuming one move request covers the whole home.
- Identify the provider at the new address. Do not assume your current company serves both locations. Ask the destination provider whether it can serve the address and what steps are needed to activate the account.
- Contact each provider early. Ask for its notice period, earliest available start date, required information or documents, and whether an appointment or access to equipment is needed.
- Give both dates explicitly. Tell the provider when service should begin at the new address and when service should end at the old one. If the same provider serves both, ask whether it can keep both addresses active temporarily and how each account will be billed.
- Get confirmation. Request a confirmation number or written notice showing the service dates and the status of each address. Keep the date of each conversation and the contact person’s name.
- Close the loop after moving. Provide a forwarding address for the final bill and check that the old account was actually closed.
Missouri’s Public Service Commission advises customers to notify each utility as soon as possible, provide a stop date, keep a record of contacts, request final meter readings, and give the provider a forwarding address. It also cautions customers not to rely on another person to remove service from their name: Missouri PSC moving guidance.
Choose dates that match the handoff
Set the new service start date for when you need it available, not merely for the day you submit the request. A move-in date, key handoff, utility appointment, or provider processing time may affect when service can begin. Separately choose the old service end date based on when you will leave and who is responsible afterward.

If you are renting, check the lease and ask the landlord which services are included and who must open or close accounts. If you are buying or selling, coordinate the dates with the transaction and the providers. Do not use a generic shutoff buffer as a rule: the right handoff depends on the provider and the agreement between the parties.
Ask about overlap instead of assuming a transfer is seamless
A provider may describe moving service as a transfer while still requiring a distinct start at the new home and end at the old one. Temporary overlap can be useful when move-out and move-in dates do not align, but it may mean both addresses remain active and potentially billable. Ask exactly which address each account covers and when charges stop.

Provider deadlines are not universal. For example, Consumers Energy says customers in its service territory can submit start, stop, or transfer requests for moves within the next 30 days, and notes that transferring may leave power or gas on at both addresses. EPCOR’s Edmonton guidance asks for at least three business days’ notice; Encor customers need at least five business days, and the page says overlap is common. These are instructions for those providers and contexts, not deadlines for other utilities. Check the current requirements directly with the company serving your address: Consumers Energy moving guidance and EPCOR moving guidance.
Record meter readings at both homes
Where meters apply, record or photograph the reading and date when you leave the old property and when you take possession of the new one. Submit readings in the way the provider requests, and retain a copy. This helps document the account handoff, but it does not replace confirming the start and stop dates with the provider.

Northern Ireland’s Utility Regulator advises people moving out to tell their supplier and take a final reading on move-out day. It also advises people moving in to contact the existing supplier with a meter reading and their details, helping reduce the risk of being billed for a previous occupant’s energy use: Utility Regulator Northern Ireland moving-home guidance. Procedures and responsibilities differ elsewhere, so check the local supplier’s instructions.
Prevent responsibility for the previous occupant’s account
When you move in, contact the provider serving the property and establish your own account or otherwise follow its required process. Do not assume the previous occupant’s account arrangement applies to you, or that a service already on means the account is in your name. Provide the move-in date and any requested meter reading, then ask the provider to confirm when your responsibility begins.

Use a move-out checklist
- List each service separately and identify the provider for both addresses.
- Confirm the new address is within the provider’s service area and ask what is needed to start service.
- Ask about notice periods, appointments, access, deposits, and whether two addresses can remain active temporarily.
- Give the new-service start date and old-service end date explicitly; request written confirmation or confirmation numbers.
- Record readings and dates where meters apply, then submit them as directed.
- Provide a forwarding address, review the final bill, and verify the old account is closed.
For example, Opendoor’s May 29, 2026 help page suggests that sellers in its transaction process schedule utility shutoff three days after closing to give a new owner time to arrange service. That is a company-specific example, not a general rule; follow the provider’s requirements and the arrangements for your transaction: Opendoor utility guidance for sellers.
