If you submit a coding prompt, glance at other tabs while the assistant works, then return and have to reconstruct what you were doing, the fix is usually to change when the tool gets your attention—not to keep checking whether it has finished. Turn down response alerts during focused work, decide in advance how to handle an in-progress request, and keep each chat tied to one task.
Find what is pulling you out of the task
Start by noticing which part of the workflow triggers the switch. The cause might be an automatic suggestion that appears mid-edit, an operating-system notification, several agents running at once, or a chat thread whose old context makes the current task harder to follow. Each calls for a different adjustment; muting a notification will not solve a habit of opening several agent sessions, for example.
- Suggestions: Do they interrupt typing or prompt you to evaluate code before you are ready?
- Notifications: Do you check another window as soon as a response arrives?
- Parallel work: Are you switching between agents because each feels as if it needs attention now?
- Chat context: Are you carrying an unrelated task through a long conversation?
Pick the most frequent trigger first. Changing one part of the loop makes it easier to tell whether that change helps.
Set VS Code chat notifications for your focus block
VS Code provides separate notification settings for agent responses and confirmation requests. In the Settings UI, search for chat.notifyWindowOnResponseReceived and chat.notifyWindowOnConfirmation. Each can be set to off, windowNotFocused, or always; VS Code documents windowNotFocused as the default. The settings are also listed in the VS Code AI settings reference.

| Mode | What it does | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
off |
Suppresses that notification. | A deliberate focus block when you plan to review the chat at a chosen time. |
windowNotFocused |
Notifies when the VS Code window is not focused. | You want a cue when working elsewhere, but not while VS Code is in front. |
always |
Notifies regardless of whether the VS Code window is focused. | You intentionally want immediate awareness of that event. |
These controls cover two different events: a response arriving and a confirmation being requested. Choose each mode deliberately rather than assuming one choice governs both. VS Code says a notification can include a response preview and selecting it can bring focus to the chat session, so even a brief alert can become a context switch. Details are in Use chat in VS Code.
For a focused interval, try off or windowNotFocused and review the chat at a planned break. If you need to see confirmation requests promptly, keep that setting more visible while suppressing ordinary response alerts. These are options, not a guarantee that you will stay focused; choose based on which interruptions matter in your work.

Choose what to do while an agent request is running
When you send a new message while an agent is working in VS Code, you can queue it, steer the current request, or stop the request and send the new message. The VS Code chat guide describes how these options work.
- Queue a follow-up if the current response can finish and the next request can wait. It is useful when you know what you want next but do not need to interrupt the current work.
- Steer the request if it needs redirection. VS Code signals the agent to yield after its current tool execution, allowing you to change course without treating every new thought as a separate parallel task.
- Stop and send when you want to cancel the current request and submit a different message. Use it when continuing the current request is no longer useful, not just because it is taking time.
Deciding which action fits before typing can replace reflexive checking or launching another task with a clear choice: let it finish, redirect it, or cancel it.

Keep chat context aligned with the task
Continue a conversation when the new message depends on what came before—for example, refining generated code, debugging the same error, or iterating on the same design. Start a fresh conversation when you move to a different problem, a new feature, or a separate kind of work such as documentation or release tasks.
That boundary is useful for attention as well as context: a thread devoted to one task is easier to return to than one mixing unrelated work. GitHub Docs recommends this distinction because Copilot may process a message alongside conversation history and other context; longer threads can involve more context. Its guidance puts the benefit plainly: “Starting fresh helps Copilot focus on your new goal.” See Optimize GitHub Copilot Chat context to reduce AI credit usage.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
It is plausible that AI suggestions and alerts can interrupt a developer’s flow, but the available findings do not establish that AI use universally reduces productivity or that one setting restores focus.
JetBrains Research’s 2026 workflow study compared 400 AI Assistant users with 400 non-users. Users had used JetBrains AI Assistant at least monthly from April through October 2024, while telemetry tracked the same devices from October 2022 through October 2024. Across 800 users, the dataset contained 151,904,543 logged events. The researchers used IDE-window activations as a proxy for context switching and explicitly aimed to identify patterns, not causal effects. They reported about six more monthly IDE activations for AI users and about seven fewer for non-users over the study period. Those are study-specific telemetry results, not counts of distractions or proof that AI caused focus loss. See Understanding AI’s Impact on Developer Workflows.

A February 2026 JetBrains Blog account reported that 74% of surveyed AI-assisted developers did not notice increased switching, while the telemetry showed a different pattern. That is a survey finding about what respondents noticed, not an objective switching rate; it should not be treated as contradicting or replacing the telemetry measure. See AI Tool Switching Is Stealth Friction.
A 2024 review in the International Journal of Human–Computer Interaction discusses task stabilization, advance alerts, and thoughtful timing as possible ways to reduce interruption costs, and notes that suggestions should fit what the user is doing. These are system-design ideas discussed in a review, not proven personal productivity prescriptions for every developer. Read Ironies of Generative AI.
Likewise, a 2026 JetBrains Research study asked 56 professional developers about 33 candidate assistant settings and held design sessions with seven participants. The report says nearly three quarters of settings were wanted and barely a third were believed to exist. That indicates interest in control over assistant behavior; it does not show that every proposed setting improves productivity. See The control board developers would build.
Try a small, observable workflow change
- Choose one task you can work on without opening unrelated AI sessions.
- For one focused interval, set VS Code response and confirmation notifications to
offorwindowNotFocused, choosing each based on whether you need immediate confirmation alerts. - When the agent is busy, queue a message if it can wait, steer if the task needs redirection, or stop and send only if you intend to cancel.
- Review the response at a planned point, then note whether you checked fewer unrelated tabs and whether any important request was missed.
This is a personal experiment, not a result guaranteed by the studies above. If fewer alerts help, keep the setting for that kind of task; if you miss time-sensitive confirmations, adjust that notification rather than restoring every interruption.
