For more realistic AI room renders, write a compact visual brief: identify the room and its purpose, place the key furniture, describe materials and light, set the camera view, and state what must stay unchanged. Concrete instructions give the image generator clearer decisions than a string of quality buzzwords—and no prompt can guarantee exact geometry.

What should you include in an AI room-render prompt?

Think of the prompt as a brief for a particular image, not a request for the model to invent an entire design. Include the decisions that matter most, in language that describes visible results.

  1. Purpose and room: Identify the space and how it is used, such as a lived-in family living room or a compact rental kitchen.
  2. Layout and important objects: Describe the known geometry and name only the key furniture or fixtures. Specify their positions with relationships such as left and right, foreground and background, or near and far.
  3. Materials and texture: Name what surfaces look and feel like: matte plaster, visible oak grain, brushed metal, or nubby linen. Words such as “luxury” or “realistic” do not describe a finish.
  4. Lighting: Say where the light comes from, which direction it falls, and whether it is soft or hard. “Soft daylight entering from the left window” is more actionable than “beautiful lighting.”
  5. Viewpoint and framing: Set the camera height, framing, and image type—for example, eye-level wide framing that reads as interior photography.
  6. Style and mood: Choose a coherent treatment and palette. Avoid piling on adjectives that point in different directions.
  7. Constraints: State what must remain fixed and what should not appear, such as “keep the window on the back wall” and “do not add text or logos.” Use the product’s reference or editing controls when precision matters.

This checklist is a flexible structure, not a guaranteed formula. OpenAI Academy says one to three clear sentences are often enough for ChatGPT image prompts, while Midjourney also favors short, clear phrasing but notes that fewer details provide less control. The appropriate length depends on the tool and the image’s complexity. OpenAI Academy’s image-generation guidance and Midjourney’s Prompt Basics both emphasize clear visual direction.

Example: a prompt for a more believable living room

“Create a realistic editorial image of a small, lived-in living room. Keep the window on the back wall and the sofa along the right wall, with a low oak coffee table centered on a textured wool rug. Show matte warm-white plaster, visible oak grain, and soft overcast daylight entering from the window on the left; use eye-level, wide interior-photography framing, natural proportions, and a muted earth-tone palette. Keep the room layout and furniture positions unchanged; do not add text or logos.”

The example demonstrates how to combine layout, materials, light, and framing. It is not a tested prompt, and it does not establish that a particular generator will reproduce exact room geometry.

How do you keep the same room layout?

Describe fixed elements directly, then use an image reference if the product supports image input. A reference can communicate a layout or a style more directly than prose, but products handle references differently and should not be assumed to copy them precisely.

When using multiple images, explain each image’s role in the prompt: “Image 1 is the room layout; preserve the window and furniture positions. Image 2 is a style and material reference; use its warm palette and wood finish.” OpenAI recommends keeping the image set small, clarifying how the images relate, and using spatial language. Midjourney distinguishes image prompts and references from its Editor, which is intended for precise changes; its documentation says image prompts guide a new image rather than copy a reference exactly. See Midjourney’s Image Prompts documentation for its product-specific behavior.

If an exact arrangement is essential, start with a relevant reference image or use an editing control designed for changing an existing image, then inspect the result. A reference can guide the generator, but it is not a fidelity guarantee.

How should you refine a room render?

Generate an initial image, identify its biggest mismatch, and request one focused change. Tell the model both what to alter and what to preserve—for example, “Keep the composition and furniture positions; make the daylight softer.” Make a separate request for a material or color adjustment rather than combining several unrelated revisions. OpenAI recommends direct feedback and small, targeted revisions.

  • The result looks like a showroom or generic CGI: Add a few signs of ordinary use and specific surface descriptions. Avoid adding many decorative details at once.
  • Materials look flat or plastic: Describe the finish and texture plainly, and explain how light falls across the surface. This gives clearer direction but cannot guarantee a particular rendering.
  • Perspective feels distorted: Reduce competing camera cues, specify one viewpoint and framing, and consider a layout reference. Check the output rather than assuming that “wide-angle” will preserve realistic proportions.
  • The layout drifts: Restate the fixed elements, provide a layout reference if supported, and request a targeted edit. Midjourney describes image prompts as influences on content and composition, not exact copies.
  • An edit changes too much: Repeat the important invariant, such as “keep the same composition and layout,” and request only one change in that revision.

How advice differs across image generators

Tool What its official guidance supports Practical implication
ChatGPT image generation OpenAI Academy says one to three clear sentences are often effective, and recommends concrete details, explicit constraints, small revisions, and explaining the roles and spatial relationships of reference images. Write a concise brief, then use direct, targeted follow-up instructions when the image needs adjustment.
Midjourney Prompt Basics recommends short, clear prompts and identifies subject, medium, environment, lighting, color, mood, and composition as useful dimensions. Image Prompts explains that references guide a new image rather than copy an existing one. Choose the most important visual details; consult current documentation for version-specific reference controls or numeric parameters.
Adobe Firefly Adobe’s tutorial emphasizes reference images, framing, lighting, camera settings, and material detail. Its examples include building a scene around a product photo and maintaining a character, rather than evidence of room-render performance. Apply the general advice on references and visual detail, but do not treat the tutorial as proof that Firefly will preserve a room layout.

These descriptions explain documented prompt features, not which product makes the most realistic room render. A fair comparison would use the same brief and inputs, then assess layout adherence, material and texture, lighting and perspective, reference controls, and whether localized edits preserve unchanged areas. No room-render-specific success rate or measured statistic is established by the cited official guidance.

Why concrete instructions beat quality buzzwords

“Photorealistic luxury living room, 8K, masterpiece” says little about where the sofa belongs, how the room is lit, or what the finishes look like. A useful prompt spends its limited space on those image decisions. OpenAI Academy puts the principle plainly: “Clarity is more effective than clever phrasing—especially for details like layout, texture, materials, or light.” (OpenAI Academy, April 10, 2026.)
