Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo protect FastAPI endpoints, authenticate each request to establish the caller’s identity, then authorize that caller for the specific operation. FastAPI’s dependency system supports both steps: a bearer-token dependency can feed a reusable current-user check, and Security with OAuth2 scopes can declare route permissions and make them available to enforcement code.
A declared scope is only a requirement—not a permission check by itself. Your application must validate the token, load the principal, and explicitly deny access when the principal lacks the required permission.
How FastAPI authentication and authorization fit together
Authentication answers “who is making this request?” Authorization answers “may this caller perform this action on this resource?” Keep them separate: a valid identity does not automatically have permission to read or change every record.
- Authentication: extract credentials, validate them, and resolve them to a current user or other principal.
- Authorization: check that principal’s grants and any domain rules—such as record ownership—at the protected operation.
FastAPI’s security utilities integrate with its dependency system and OpenAPI documentation. They provide building blocks; your application still supplies the token endpoint, identity lookup, permission rules, and data-store behavior.

Choose an identity flow that matches your clients
App-owned username and password
If a frontend you control sends a username and password to your backend, the OAuth2 password-flow pattern in FastAPI’s tutorial can illustrate the login-to-token flow. It is not a universal choice for every OAuth2 integration. If you are building an OAuth2 provider or supporting third-party clients, select a flow appropriate to that use case rather than adopting the password flow by default. See FastAPI’s OAuth2 with Password (and hashing), Bearer with JWT tokens tutorial and its scope guidance.
Delegated identity through an external provider
An external identity provider can be a better fit when you want to delegate login and identity lifecycle rather than own those functions. The application must still validate the provider’s credentials or tokens and enforce its own access rules. Provider selection depends on your client types, security needs, operational requirements, and the provider’s current capabilities; the cited FastAPI tutorials do not compare providers.
Declare the bearer-token scheme
OAuth2PasswordBearer is a FastAPI dependency that extracts a bearer token from the request’s Authorization header and contributes an OAuth2 security scheme to OpenAPI. Its tokenUrl is documentation for where a client obtains a token; it does not create that endpoint. FastAPI’s first-steps guide explains that the URL is metadata, and that a relative URL helps preserve behavior when an application is mounted beneath a prefix or served through a proxy prefix.
from fastapi.security import OAuth2PasswordBearer
oauth2_scheme = OAuth2PasswordBearer(tokenUrl="token")
Here, token is relative. Implement the corresponding token path operation yourself, and ensure the declared URL matches how clients should reach it in your deployment. Follow FastAPI’s security first steps for the relationship between the dependency, OpenAPI, and the token URL.

Create a token endpoint without treating the tutorial as production storage
The official JWT tutorial demonstrates verifying submitted credentials against a stored password hash, then returning a JWT access token. It uses pwdlib for password hashing and PyJWT for JWT operations. Check the current package guidance and compatibility with the FastAPI and Python versions in your project before adopting code from a tutorial.
Never store plaintext passwords. Store password hashes produced by a password-hashing library, and compare a login attempt with the stored hash using that library’s verification function. The tutorial’s illustrative signing key and in-memory user data are examples, not production secrets or a durable user store. Supply signing secrets through an appropriate secrets-management mechanism and use your application’s real data store.
The token endpoint should return a token only after credential verification. Keep its response limited to public user data and token information; do not expose stored password hashes. Token lifetime, signing-key management, revocation, and related deployment controls must be chosen for your application rather than inferred from an illustrative sample.
Build a reusable current-user dependency
Token extraction alone does not authenticate a user. A shared dependency should decode and validate the token, require the expected subject, resolve that subject to a current account in your data store, and reject missing or invalid identities. If accounts can be disabled, check their active status before allowing protected work.

from fastapi import Depends, HTTPException, status
from fastapi.security import OAuth2PasswordBearer
oauth2_scheme = OAuth2PasswordBearer(tokenUrl="token")
def get_current_user(token: str = Depends(oauth2_scheme)):
# Application-specific steps:
# 1. Decode and validate the token, including its signature and claims.
# 2. Require a subject identifying a user.
# 3. Load that user from the application's data store.
# 4. Reject an unknown or inactive account.
# Raise an authentication error if any check fails.
...
The omitted operations are deliberately application-specific: they depend on your JWT configuration, user model, and data-access layer. Do not treat a successfully decoded token as sufficient if its claims are invalid, its subject is absent, or the corresponding account no longer exists. FastAPI’s JWT tutorial shows the broader password-hash, token, and current-user pattern.
Use a separate public representation for user data instead of serializing a database model that includes a password hash. If your application tracks account status, reject inactive users in a dedicated check or as part of the current-user dependency.
Enforce application permissions at the endpoint boundary
For straightforward rules, use application dependencies or domain checks. For example, an operation that changes a document may require the caller to be its owner or an administrator. Perform that check where the application has the resource and principal available; being authenticated does not establish ownership.
Missing or invalid credentials should produce an authentication response with an appropriate challenge. A caller who is authenticated but lacks permission is a different case; choose the response mapping your API contract requires. Keep error details generic enough not to reveal sensitive account information. The exact status and response policy should be deliberate rather than assumed from a tutorial.

When to use OAuth2 scopes
Scopes are useful when permissions map naturally to OAuth2 grants, clients need delegated access, or publishing requirements through OpenAPI helps client developers. FastAPI’s scope guide makes clear that scopes are optional and can be overkill; ordinary application authorization remains valid.
Scope names are opaque strings to OAuth2. For example, an application might define users:read and users:write, but the colon has no built-in meaning. Define what each string grants and apply that meaning consistently.
Declare scopes and attach requirements
Define the available scope vocabulary in the OAuth2 scheme, then use Security on operations that require particular scopes. FastAPI aggregates requirements through the dependency tree and makes them available to a central dependency as SecurityScopes.
from fastapi import Depends, HTTPException, Security, status
from fastapi.security import OAuth2PasswordBearer, SecurityScopes
scopes = {
"users:read": "Read user information",
"users:write": "Create or update user information",
}
oauth2_scheme = OAuth2PasswordBearer(
tokenUrl="token",
scopes=scopes,
)
def get_current_user(
security_scopes: SecurityScopes,
token: str = Depends(oauth2_scheme),
):
# Validate token and resolve the current user as above.
user = ...
granted_scopes = set(user.scopes) # Adapt to your token or permission model.
missing = set(security_scopes.scopes) - granted_scopes
if missing:
raise HTTPException(
status_code=status.HTTP_403_FORBIDDEN,
detail="Not enough permissions",
)
return user
@app.get("/users/{user_id}")
def read_user(
user_id: str,
current_user=Security(get_current_user, scopes=["users:read"]),
):
# Apply resource-level rules here too, such as ownership if required.
...
This sketch leaves token decoding, user lookup, and the application’s permission representation to your code. If grants are carried in the token, validate and interpret them according to your token design; if they are stored on the user or elsewhere, load them from the authoritative source. A scope declaration documents a requirement but does not enforce it unless code compares that requirement with the caller’s grants and denies access when a required grant is absent.

Test authentication and permission failures separately
Exercise both identity validation and authorization boundaries. Include cases such as:
- A protected request with no token.
- A malformed or expired token.
- A token whose subject does not resolve to a current user.
- A disabled account, if the application supports account states.
- A valid user who lacks the route’s required permission.
- A valid user with the required permission, including any resource-specific ownership rules.
These cases help distinguish failures to establish identity from failures to authorize an otherwise authenticated caller.
