Google Workspace add-ons are not automatically safe or unsafe. Their potential access depends on the OAuth permissions they request and whether a user or Workspace administrator authorizes them. Check the requested permissions against the feature you want, and ask your administrator to review unfamiliar add-ons on a managed account. Admin controls can limit or block access to Google data, but they do not establish what a provider does with data after access.
What an add-on’s permissions mean
A Workspace add-on is software that must be installed and authorized to work; it is not merely a passive decoration in an app. During first use, an authorization card or dialog describes the access it requests. You can grant or deny that request, though an administrator may install add-ons for people in a managed organization. Google’s installation and authorization guide explains this flow.
OAuth scopes specify what Google data or actions an app is asking to access. Google’s guidance is to use only the scopes needed for the feature: “Always use the least permissive scope set possible.” For example, Google warns that the https://mail.google.com scope grants full Gmail access and says published add-ons should use narrower scopes where possible.
Can an add-on read Gmail or Drive data?
It may request access to Gmail, Drive, or other Workspace data, depending on its scopes. The consent screen is the place to inspect the requested permissions before authorization. A permission to access a service does not, by itself, tell you how the provider stores, shares, or uses data once the app has received it.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to assess an add-on before authorizing it
- Read every requested permission. Compare each scope on the authorization screen with the feature you intend to use. If the access seems broader than the feature calls for, pause and seek an explanation.
- Pay particular attention to broad access. Full Gmail access through
https://mail.google.comwarrants a clear reason. Google recommends choosing the narrowest scopes that support the function. - Check who provides the app. Review the developer identity, support contact, and privacy policy in the app information and listing. Google’s Admin Help documentation identifies privacy-policy and support information as app details.
- For a managed account, ask your administrator. An administrator can review the app and decide whether to permit, limit, or block its access. The documented Admin Console path is Security > Access and data control > API controls; the administrator needs the Security settings administrator privilege.
- Read the provider’s privacy terms separately. Google’s permission and publication processes do not establish a particular provider’s retention, sharing, or other data-handling practices.
What Workspace administrators can control
In the Admin Console, an administrator can review apps that are configured, have accessed data, or are pending review. Google documents four access settings, which can be applied to an organization or selected organizational units:
| Setting | Access allowed |
|---|---|
| Trusted | All Google Workspace services, including restricted services. |
| Limited | Unrestricted Google services only. |
| Specific Google data | Only the scopes configured for that app. |
| Blocked | No access to Google data. |
App details typically appear 24–48 hours after authorization, according to Google Workspace Admin Help; treat that timing as an operational detail that can change. These controls govern an app’s access to Google data. They do not determine what the provider retains or does with data it has already received.

Can an administrator block an add-on?
Yes. An administrator can set an app to Blocked, or choose a less restrictive setting such as Specific Google data when only selected scopes should be allowed. Organizational-unit settings let the administrator apply a decision to selected groups rather than necessarily making the same choice for everyone.
What Google review and OAuth verification do—and do not—show
Google examines the scopes declared for published add-ons during publication review, and overly broad scopes can prevent publication approval. Separately, some public apps that use sensitive or restricted scopes may need OAuth verification; use of restricted-scope data can also involve security assessment requirements. These are distinct processes, described in Google’s scope guidance, Marketplace OAuth configuration documentation, and OAuth consent and scope guidance.

Neither publication review nor OAuth verification is a blanket guarantee of a provider’s security, data retention, or secondary-use practices. Marketplace availability is not a substitute for checking the app’s permissions and privacy terms.
