A DCP that will not play can be failing at one of four stages: transfer, package discovery, ingest, or scheduled playback. Find the stage before changing anything. Preserve the delivered package, record the complete error message, and ask the venue for the relevant ingest or playback-server logs. A desktop player can help inspect a package, but only the receiving cinema system can establish whether it will ingest and play it.
First, find where playback fails
Ask: does the transfer stop, can the server not find the package, does ingest reject it, or does the title ingest but fail when scheduled or started? Each stage points to a different next check. Note the receiving server model and software version if the venue can provide them, along with the exact error text and when it appeared.
- Before troubleshooting: keep the original delivered copy intact. Do not rename files, edit playlists, or remove files to see whether the package works.
- Request the venue’s records: ask for the ingest or playback-server log entries associated with the attempt. If a copy or transfer was involved, ask whether the venue can compare the delivered files or run its normal hash/integrity check.
- Identify the last successful stage: establish whether the complete transfer finished, whether the server discovered the package, whether ingest completed, and whether playback actually began.
Terms such as “DCP won’t ingest” or “Invalid CPL” describe common searches and reports, but they do not identify a cause by themselves. The table below maps the symptom to a useful next check.
What to check for each symptom

These are diagnostic possibilities, not conclusions that can be drawn from an error phrase alone. An actual validation report and the receiving system’s logs are needed to isolate the fault.

How package structure and validation affect ingest
A DCP is not a single video file. SMPTE defines it as “a collection of files containing D-Cinema essence and related metadata to be ingested and reproduced by a D-Cinema playback system.” In a package, the Packing List (PKL) identifies the package and its assets; the Composition Playlist (CPL) defines a composition and refers to the Track Files used for it. Missing assets, mismatched identifiers, malformed playlist data, or an incomplete copy can interfere with discovery, ingest, or playback. See SMPTE ST 429-2, sections 1 and 5.2–5.3.
When the transfer appears complete but ingest fails, have the package inspected with a DCP validation tool or by the mastering facility that created it. Dolby CineInspect’s documented checks include ASSETMAP and VOLINDEX naming, signatures, the SMPTE CPL key ID, JPEG 2000 frame readability, MXF universal labels, and UUID validity. Its manual distinguishes standard validation from stricter DCI validation: standard validation accepts Interop or SMPTE packages, while the manual’s DCI validation mode treats an Interop package as an error. That describes this vendor tool’s validation modes; it does not establish that every cinema server rejects Interop. See the Dolby CineAsset manual, pages 34–35.

Compare the validation report with the venue’s log rather than attempting repairs on the only copy. If validation identifies a structural or integrity fault, the mastering facility may be able to provide a corrected package; if the package validates, the receiving server’s error and capabilities still need to be checked.
Check delivery media and the receiving server’s requirements
An external drive is a delivery method, not a remedy for a malformed package, an integrity mismatch, or an authorization error. Before buying, formatting, or reformatting a drive, ask the venue which drive type, filesystem, and package form its server accepts. DCP Cloud’s FAQ advises coordinating delivery with the theater and notes that servers can have specific drive and format requirements; this is provider guidance, not a guarantee of compatibility for every venue. Likewise, successful playback in a consumer or desktop DCP player is useful evidence that the files can be inspected or decoded in that environment, but it does not prove that the cinema’s target server supports the package or its delivery setup. Ask the receiving venue to check its server capability and ingest logs for the actual delivery.
For encrypted content, verify the KDM and playback window
A KDM (Key Delivery Message) authorizes playback of encrypted content on the intended system during an authorized time window. Confirm with the distributor or content owner that the content is encrypted, the KDM was issued for the intended composition and target playback system, and the window is active according to the server’s trusted clock. For a rejection, have the venue verify the target certificate and clock, and ask the distributor or content owner to check the KDM and issue a corrected one if needed. Do not attempt to bypass encryption. DCI’s Digital Cinema System Specification v1.4.5 specifies valid KDM and CPL requirements for encrypted playback and secure time.

If the picture, sound, or subtitles are wrong
Once playback starts, distinguish a content-selection problem from a decoding or venue-output problem. Confirm which CPL the operator selected and which tracks it references, then ask the venue to inspect the corresponding server or media-block errors and signal routing. If the package inspection shows a missing, unreadable, or mismatched track, involve the mastering facility or content owner rather than editing files on the delivery copy. DCI’s Compliance Test Plan includes conformance examples such as incorrect audio TrackFile IDs and frame-order or integrity errors; those examples are recognizable failure cases, not proof that any one symptom has a single cause.
When to involve the venue or mastering facility
- Ask the venue first when the package cannot be discovered, the drive is not recognized, ingest fails, or playback fails on its server. It can check the supported delivery setup, server capabilities, and system logs.
- Ask the mastering facility to inspect the package when validation reports missing files, unreadable essence, malformed metadata, or identifier and integrity problems. Provide the error text and report, but preserve the original delivered package.
- Ask the distributor or content owner to resolve KDM issues when encrypted playback is rejected. The venue can verify the target system and clock; the authorized content party can verify or correct the KDM.
The fastest useful handoff is the complete error message, the failure stage, the target server details if available, the venue’s relevant log excerpt, and any package validation report. That evidence helps separate a damaged or incomplete delivery from a package-format, server-compatibility, or authorization issue.
