An Android phone is unsupported when its manufacturer has stopped providing security patches for that exact model—not merely because it can’t install the newest Android version. Check the phone’s Android security update date and confirm the model’s support status with its manufacturer or carrier. If patches have ended, built-in safeguards can reduce some risks, but they cannot replace missing device updates.
Check whether the phone is actually unsupported
Android version, Android security update, and Google Play system update are separate statuses. A phone may stay on an older Android version and still receive security patches; it may also receive Google system-service updates after manufacturer support ends. Neither the Android version alone nor a recent Google Play system update proves that the manufacturer still patches the whole device.
- Open Settings > About phone and note the Android version, Android security update date, Google Play system update date, and build number. Names and locations can differ by phone.
- Open Settings > System > Software updates, or the equivalent update page, and check for Android or manufacturer software updates. Android says update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and carrier. Android Help: Check and update your Android version.
- Check the security and Google Play system update options separately; they may appear under Security & privacy, System & updates, or another menu.
- Restart the phone and check again if an update was not offered. Older devices cannot always run newer Android versions, but that alone does not show that security patches have stopped.
- Look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s support page or ask the manufacturer or carrier whether it still receives Android security updates. Confirm the end date for your country and carrier variant, if applicable.
Google Play system updates and Google Play services updates cover components delivered through Google’s update mechanisms; they may arrive separately from Android updates. They can improve protections, but do not establish that the manufacturer continues to patch every operating-system, firmware, or hardware component. Install every update still available
Install offered Android, manufacturer, security, Google Play system, and app updates. Back up important data before a major update, reset, repair, or replacement. Google notes that uncertified devices may not have secure backup; certification status and Play Protect’s app-scanning feature are different things. Check Play Protect certification status.

If an update fails, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model or contact its support team. Do not assume that repeatedly checking will make an unavailable update eligible, and do not install firmware from an unverified source.
Reduce the risks that remain
These steps improve account and app security, but none supplies missing firmware or operating-system patches. Use them as risk reduction, not as a way to make an unsupported phone equivalent to a supported one.

- Keep Google Play Protect on. It scans apps and can warn about or remove harmful ones. If you install apps from outside Google Play, enable improved harmful-app detection as Google recommends. Google Play Protect.
- Be selective about apps. Remove apps you no longer need or do not trust, especially sideloaded apps without a clear source. Install apps from reputable sources and review permissions for anything you keep.
- Strengthen access and recovery. Set a strong screen lock, keep account recovery details current, and review your Google Account Security Checkup. Maintain device encryption if available.
- Limit exposure. Avoid sensitive activities on the phone when practical, particularly if it is far behind on security updates. A VPN, antivirus app, case, or screen protector does not fix missing device patches.
Play Protect is not a substitute for manufacturer support: Google describes app scanning and harmful-app warnings, not delivery of missing OS or firmware security fixes. Also distinguish the scanning feature from Play Protect certification. Google says non-certified devices may not receive system or app updates and may lack secure backup; this does not mean every older certified phone is unsupported. Why the patch date matters
A security patch level indicates which published Android security fixes are included, though the exact updates a device receives depend on its manufacturer and model. A gap can leave known vulnerabilities unaddressed. For example, the Android Security Bulletin published September 8, 2026, and updated September 16, 2026, says patch level 2026-09-05 or later addresses the issues listed in that bulletin. It describes a critical System-component vulnerability that could allow remote code execution without user interaction under the bulletin’s stated assumptions about mitigations. Decide whether to keep or replace it
Android’s system security best-practices page says devices should receive ongoing security support for at least two years from launch. That is guidance, not a guarantee that every phone receives a particular duration. Android Enterprise Recommended criteria can also help readers assess published update commitments for qualifying devices, but program status does not guarantee support for every product currently on sale. If the maker confirms that support has ended, weigh the phone’s remaining usefulness against the sensitivity of what you do on it. For a replacement, compare these factors rather than Android version alone:

- The manufacturer-published security-support end date and update cadence for the exact model.
- Availability and support for your country and carrier.
- Cost and compatibility with your apps, accessibility needs, and required hardware.
- Privacy and backup needs, including a practical way to move your data.
Browse Android phones as a starting point, then verify the exact support end date with the manufacturer before buying. If you keep the old phone temporarily, avoid using it for sensitive tasks when practical and maintain a current backup.

A custom ROM is not a universal shortcut to safe, current software. Changing the operating system can introduce data-corruption and security risks, and the phone or apps may malfunction. Google’s warning concerns a deliberately changed operating system: “You can continue using your device. But you acknowledge that your device might not work properly and your data could be exposed to corruption and security risks.” Rooting or unlocking a bootloader also changes the device’s trust state and may affect certification. Use only documentation for the exact device, understand the risks, and back up first; if you do not have experience with this process, replacing the phone is the safer, simpler route.
