Publish a new story from Chrome

Open Medium in a supported desktop version of Chrome and sign in. Medium lists Chrome among the browsers that support its full desktop experience, including composing and editing stories, on the two most recent versions of supported desktop operating systems. See Medium’s supported-browser guidance.

Select Write to start a draft. Medium automatically saves drafts to the account’s Stories area. See How to publish a story on Medium.

Write or paste your story into the editor. Select text to apply basic formatting or add a link. The editor also supports headings, subheadings, quote blocks, lists, and other formatting features. Review the draft for layout and completeness before publishing. See Medium’s publishing instructions.

Select Publish to review the settings available for the story. These can include topics, title and subtitle, scheduling, and a preview image. If you are enrolled in the Medium Partner Program, the publishing flow may also offer an engagement-based revenue eligibility setting.

Choose Publish now to make the story available immediately. A draft is not yet a published story; Medium says published stories can be read by anyone from the author’s profile and elsewhere. Changes saved to a published story become visible immediately. See Medium’s publishing instructions.

Move an existing webpage to Medium
If the story already exists as a webpage, Medium offers an import route as well as manual copy-and-paste. Use the import route when Medium can interpret the source page; use manual editing if the import fails or leaves out content.

If the import is blank or incomplete
Medium warns that the import tool may produce a blank page or an error when it cannot interpret a source webpage. Start a draft, copy and paste the text, then check formatting and add media or embeds that did not transfer. A canonical link is optional for manual migration, but can identify the original source when republishing content. See Medium’s import guidance.

What “without an API” means
This method publishes through Medium’s signed-in web editor, rather than through an API client or a new integration. Medium says, “Medium will not be issuing any new integration tokens for our API and will not allow any new integrations.” Its help page also says existing tokens continue to work. For the manual Chrome workflow above, you sign in and use Medium’s own interface; you do not need an API token. See Medium’s API integration-token guidance.

Medium does not support uploading a Word document, PDF, or other file and converting it into a story. Instead, create a draft and paste in the document’s text, then correct the formatting in the editor. See Medium’s file-upload guidance.
