If keyframed motion, timing, sharpness, geometry, or color changes after export, first identify which of those changed. Keyframes set animated property values at particular times; interpolation controls the values between them. Export settings can alter frame timing, scaling, or color, while the player or display can make an unchanged file look different. Compare the same moment in the editor and another viewer before changing settings.
First, identify what changed
Compare the exported file with the editor’s preview at the same time or frame. Note whether the difference is in movement or easing, timing, image detail or shape, color or brightness, or only the viewer. If the export matches the editor in one viewer but not another, investigate the viewing path before re-rendering.
- Motion or easing: movement between keyframes differs.
- Timing: an animation starts, ends, or lands on a different frame.
- Image: the result looks softer, aliased, stretched, or combed.
- Color: the export looks brighter, darker, or more washed out.
- Viewer-only difference: the same file looks different in different players or systems.
The steps below use Adobe Premiere as a concrete example because Adobe documents these controls. Other editors may use different labels; look for equivalent frame-rate, interpolation, scaling, preview-render, and color-management settings.
If the motion or easing changed
Check interpolation and keyframe values
Interpolation determines the values of an animated property between its keyframes. For example, Bezier interpolation uses a curve to control how quickly a property changes, so different interpolation can change the apparent easing even when the endpoints are unchanged. Inspect the property’s interpolation type and curve, then verify the keyframe positions and values. As a diagnostic, compare with a simple interpolation mode. Adobe’s Premiere keyframe overview and keyframe interpolation guidance explain the concepts; exact controls vary by editor and version.

Compare sequence and export frame rates
When export frame rate differs from the source or sequence, frames may need to be duplicated, removed, blended, or generated. That can change the apparent movement or introduce artifacts. Adobe describes three Premiere time-interpolation choices: Frame Sampling duplicates or removes frames, Frame Blending blends adjacent frames, and Optical Flow estimates motion to generate frames. Optical Flow can create artifacts when frames differ significantly. Match the source, sequence, and export frame rates where practical; if delivery requires conversion, make a short representative export and compare smoothness and artifacts. See Adobe’s basic video export settings.
If the image looks soft, distorted, or combed
Verify frame size and pixel aspect ratio
Check that the export frame size is the one you intend. Also check pixel aspect ratio: Adobe notes that using a different ratio can distort the image. If a scale, rotation, or position transform is involved, compare at the intended output size; resampling during scaling can affect detail.

Check render quality and field order
In Premiere, Use Maximum Render Quality may help preserve detail when scaling or changing frame size, though Adobe notes that it can increase export time. If the export shows comb-like edges or other field-related artifacts, check whether the project and export use the intended progressive or interlaced field order. These options are among the settings described in Adobe’s basic export settings.
Rule out older preview files
Premiere’s Use Previews option exports existing preview files rather than rendering new media, and the result can depend on the preview format. Make a comparison export with that option disabled. Adobe documents the option in its Premiere export settings reference.

If color or brightness changed
Check the color-management chain
Color can change as footage moves through the color pipeline. Adobe describes Premiere’s process as converting source clips into the sequence working color space, then converting the sequence to an output color space for monitoring and export. Check that clips are tagged correctly, that the sequence uses the intended working and output spaces, and that the export format and bit depth support the requested output. When converting wide-gamut, log, or HDR footage to a narrower output, tone mapping and gamut compression can affect the result. See Adobe’s explanation of color management in Premiere.
Check whether the viewer is the difference
If the export looks washed out in one player but not another, the cause may be how the application or system displays color rather than a change to the encoded file. Adobe’s Premiere troubleshooting guidance, updated April 22, 2026, attributes what it calls a “QuickTime gamma shift” to differences in how systems display color information. It lists gamma curves of 2.4 for broadcast, 2.2 for Windows, and 1.96 for macOS as context for its guidance—not as universal settings for every current player or workflow. Choose a monitoring target appropriate to the intended audience and compare through a consistent viewing path. Adobe also states that Premiere’s Viewer Gamma changes how footage appears inside Premiere, not how the video is exported. See Adobe’s washed-out export troubleshooting page.

Use a controlled test to isolate the cause
- Keep a known-good copy. Save a copy of the project and note its export settings before changing anything.
- Choose a short representative section. Include the affected keyframes and, if relevant, a scaled image or a color transition.
- Compare the same moment. View the export and editor preview at the same time or frame, then check the export in a second player.
- Change one relevant variable. For motion, test interpolation or frame-rate conversion; for image quality, test frame size, render quality, or Use Previews; for color, check tags, color spaces, and the viewer.
- Record what changed. Compare the short exports before changing another setting. This helps distinguish a render change from a viewer difference.
If these checks do not resolve the issue, the useful details are the editor and version, operating system, source and sequence frame rates, export settings, and a description of exactly what looks different. Premiere’s controls are examples; another editor may require its own version-specific guidance.
