LED lights make light when electrical current moves electrons and “holes” through a semiconductor junction. When an electron recombines with a hole, energy can be released as a photon; the semiconductor helps set that photon’s energy and color. A household LED bulb adds a driver, optics, heat-management parts, and a base around the LED source, so the finished lamp’s brightness, color, efficiency, and useful life depend on more than the chip alone.
How does an LED make light?
An LED, or light-emitting diode, is a semiconductor device with a junction between two regions, commonly called the P side and the N side. In a simplified description, the P side has “holes”—places where electrons are missing—and the N side has electrons. Apply voltage in the diode’s operating direction and charge carriers move toward the junction. When an electron recombines with a hole, it can release energy as a photon, a particle of light.
The energy difference in the semiconductor helps determine the photon’s energy and therefore its color. A useful analogy is a ball dropping from one shelf to another: the drop releases energy, as recombination can release energy as a photon. The analogy is limited, though: electrons and holes are quantum-mechanical states, not literal balls traveling between shelves. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) uses a similar simplified explanation in its SSL 101 presentation.
Not all electrical energy becomes light. Some is lost through non-radiative processes and as heat. Defects in gallium nitride crystal structures are one example of a mechanism associated with light losses, as described by the DOE Office of Science; they are not the only possible source of loss.

How do LEDs make white light?
A single LED generally produces a relatively narrow band of color, so an LED is not inherently a white-light source. White LED lamps use one or more design approaches to create light that appears white:
- Phosphor conversion: A phosphor near the LED converts some of its emitted light into a broader range of wavelengths. The mixture is perceived as white.
- Mixing colored emitters: Separate LEDs—often red, green, and blue—combine their output to produce white light.
- Hybrid designs: Phosphor-converted light can be combined with direct output from colored emitters.
These approaches are not guarantees of identical color quality or efficacy. For a white lamp, correlated color temperature (CCT) is a common shorthand for whether the light looks warmer or cooler. Color fidelity—how accurately objects appear under the light—can be described by the color rendering index (CRI) or IES TM-30 metrics. DOE guidance generally recommends CRI 80 as a minimum for interior lighting and calls CRI 90 or higher excellent fidelity, while noting that CRI has limitations, particularly for saturated reds. This is guidance, not a universal code requirement. See DOE’s LED Basics for its discussion of these characteristics.

What is inside a household LED bulb?
The LED source is only one part of a complete lamp. DOE describes an LED lamp as having an LED source, such as a package or array; an LED driver; an ANSI-standard base; and optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical components. The driver conditions electrical power for the LED source, optical parts shape and direct the light, and the thermal design helps manage heat. The base connects the bulb to a compatible socket. DOE’s lamp-components overview describes this system.
This is why a chip-level explanation cannot establish whether a particular bulb will work well in a given fixture. For a replacement, check the bulb’s specifications for socket and fixture fit, delivered lumens, CCT, color-fidelity needs, dimmer compatibility, and any enclosure or fixture conditions. Compatibility should not be assumed from the fact that a bulb is an LED.

Why are LED lights energy efficient?
LED efficacy is expressed in lumens per watt (lm/W): visible light output divided by electrical input power. DOE distinguishes source efficacy, which describes the LED device, from luminaire efficacy, which reflects how the device and fixture together deliver useful light. Driver losses, fixture optics, and product design affect the result, so a source’s efficacy is not automatically the efficacy of the complete lamp or fixture.
DOE’s LED Basics page says efficacy reaches 150 lm/W or more in some specialized instances; that is not a rating for all household bulbs. The same page lists DOE research goals of 250–325 lm/W for warm-white LED packages and 250–275 lm/W for integrated products. These are goals, not claims about achieved market performance. DOE’s separate energy-savings report recounts historical milestones: early LEDs had efficacy of approximately 1 lm/W, and a named commercial white LED package reached 124 lm/W in 2010. Those figures describe historical context, not current household-bulb benchmarks.

For an actual lighting task, compare the light delivered, not just the LED chip. Lumens, efficacy, optical distribution, color, and fixture design all matter; the available DOE material does not establish one universal energy-saving percentage for every replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does an LED bulb’s lifetime rating mean?
LED lamp and luminaire useful life is commonly reported as the number of operating hours until light output falls to 70% of its initial level. This is a lumen-maintenance convention, not a promise that every complete bulb will remain unchanged or never fail. DOE says good-quality white LED lighting products are expected to provide 30,000–50,000 hours or longer on that basis; the page does not state a publication year for the figure.

The emitter is not the only possible point of failure. Driver or other electronics can fail, and color can shift before the emitters stop producing light. Lifetime figures therefore describe a defined light-output threshold, not guaranteed failure-free operation for each bulb.
