Choose image classification when an image-level label is enough, object detection when you need to find and locate separate objects, and image segmentation when you need to know which pixels belong to an object or region. For individual outlines of objects in the same class, use instance segmentation. Start with the least detailed output that still answers the application’s question.

What does each computer-vision task return?

Image classification: labels for the whole image

Image classification assigns one or more category labels to an image as a whole. It answers “what is in this image?” but does not, by itself, say where a particular object appears. For example, a service might label a picture with concepts such as a person, a location, an activity, an animal species, or a product. Google Cloud Vision describes label detection as returning generalized labels with confidence scores: Google Cloud Vision label detection.

Choose classification for image categorization, tagging, or routing when object locations and outlines are unnecessary. If an image can contain several relevant concepts, check whether the specific classifier supports multi-label output; implementations vary.

Object detection: labels and bounding boxes

Object detection identifies separate object instances and estimates their locations, usually by returning a class label and a bounding box for each detected object. Google Cloud’s object-localization documentation describes general labels and bounding boxes, including normalized box vertices: Google Cloud Vision object localization.

Detection is useful when you need to locate or count objects and a rectangle is sufficiently precise—for instance, finding products on a shelf. A box can include background around an irregular object, so it is not a substitute for an exact contour.

Image segmentation: labels or masks at pixel level

Segmentation assigns information to pixels rather than only to the whole image or a rectangular region. In semantic segmentation, each pixel receives a class label. Two objects of the same class can therefore belong to the same labeled region without having separate identities. AWS describes SageMaker AI semantic segmentation as a fine-grained, pixel-level approach to computer-vision applications: AWS SageMaker AI semantic segmentation.

Instance segmentation produces a distinct pixel mask for each object instance. That distinction matters when, for example, two people or two cars must be counted or handled separately. MIT’s Foundations of Computer Vision discussion of instance segmentation explains how instance masks differ from class-level semantic segmentation. Some image-understanding systems can combine labels, boxes, and masks in one output; Google AI illustrates such outputs in its image-understanding documentation.

Which task should you choose?

What the application needs Task to start with Why
A category or tags for the whole image Image classification Returns image-level labels without requiring object locations.
Locations and counts of object instances Object detection Boxes localize separate objects and can support counting.
A map of which pixels belong to each class Semantic segmentation Assigns class labels across image regions at pixel level.
Precise outlines for each individual object Instance segmentation Separate masks preserve object identity at pixel level.

Work backward from the decision your application must make. If a whole-image label is enough to route a photo, localization adds detail you may not need. If a person must be counted, a label saying “person” is not enough. If an irregular boundary must be cut out or measured, a box may leave too much background.

What should you compare before implementation?

  • Output granularity: Decide whether the application needs an image-level label, a box, or a pixel mask.
  • Instance identity: Ask whether two objects in the same class can be treated as one region or must remain distinguishable.
  • Annotation format: Training examples need labels that match the task—image labels, bounding boxes, or pixel masks. These are different annotation outputs; their relative cost depends on the project and is not established as a universal comparison.
  • Deployment constraints: Check image quality, latency, throughput, memory, and compute budget for the actual model and workload.
  • Cost of an error: Decide whether a rough box is acceptable or whether a boundary mistake could harm the downstream result.

More detailed outputs carry more spatial information, but that does not establish a universal ranking for speed, accuracy, or cost. Performance depends on the implementation, training data, label definitions, image conditions, and evaluation metric. Compare candidate models on representative images and the errors that matter to your application.

What do service examples tell you—and not tell you?

Google Cloud Vision treats label detection and object localization as distinct feature types, and a request can ask for multiple features. Its command-line quickstart demonstrates requesting both on one image; the example includes image-level labels and a localized person with a confidence score and normalized box vertices. A single service can provide different kinds of output, but that does not make the tasks interchangeable.

For many Vision API features, Google recommends images of 640 × 480 pixels. Google cautions that smaller images can reduce accuracy, while larger images can increase processing time and bandwidth without proportional gains: Google Cloud Vision supported files and image sizing guidance. This is product-specific guidance, not a universal minimum or a benchmark comparing classification, detection, and segmentation.

How to make the decision

  1. State the required result: Write down whether the application needs to recognize a whole image, find object locations, label regions, or isolate individual object outlines.
  2. Choose the least detailed output that meets that need: Start with classification for image-level decisions, detection for instance locations, semantic segmentation for class-labeled pixels, or instance segmentation for separate object masks.
  3. Test the output on representative images: Check whether labels, boxes, or masks are usable under your real image conditions and whether their errors are acceptable.
  4. Verify provider-specific behavior and deployment limits: Confirm current feature support, input requirements, latency, throughput, memory, and compute constraints in the provider documentation for the implementation you plan to use.
