Reddit says preparing the archive may take up to 30 days. The export is an account-data archive, not a guaranteed offline copy of every saved post’s full text or media.

Sign in to the Reddit account whose saved items you want to preserve. Use a desktop browser; Reddit says the website is generally the easiest place to find account data.

Open reddit.com/settings/data-request and submit the data request form.

Wait for Reddit to prepare the archive. Reddit Help, updated March 19, 2026, says this may take up to 30 days; that is the stated maximum estimate, not a typical turnaround promise. Reddit will notify you in your Reddit inbox when it is ready, and in some circumstances may send it to the verified email address associated with your account.

Download the archive and keep the original file unchanged. Make a separate working copy before extracting files, running scripts, or converting anything. Reddit’s help page does not state how long the download link remains available, so download the archive when you receive notice.
What the export does—and does not—guarantee
Reddit’s account-data guidance lists saved posts and comments among the information you can access while logged in. However, Reddit’s reviewed help pages do not describe the export’s exact file schema or guarantee that an archive contains every saved record, full post or comment text, or copies of externally hosted images and video. Treat it as an export of account data and saved-item references, not as a complete offline mirror of everything those references point to.

If you need to know whether a particular item is present, inspect the files in your downloaded archive rather than relying on assumptions about filenames or completeness. Compare the records you find with your visible saved list, and preserve the raw export before making changes. The official documentation does not establish a guaranteed item count or recovery rate.

For its documented workflow, see the Reddit Stash README. Review the current requirements and permissions before using any third-party processor, especially one that requests account or API credentials. Its processing behavior describes that tool alone and is not a promise about Reddit’s export.

Keep a usable, recoverable backup

Store the downloaded ZIP in a clearly named folder and retain it as your untouched original.

Extract a working copy. Identify the files that relate to saved posts and comments before importing or converting them.

If you use a script, check its current documentation and permissions. A tool may need account/API credentials or may rely on external archives to retrieve content.

Keep another copy somewhere separate from the working folder. Choose storage that fits your privacy, available space, and recovery needs.

Open a sample of saved-post and saved-comment records and follow a few links to check what the archive actually preserves. A record can keep a reference without retaining the linked page’s complete text or media.
Be careful with options that change your Reddit account
Reddit Stash documents an option to automatically unsave items after processing. Unsaving changes the saved list in your Reddit account. Inspect the current configuration, make and verify a backup first, and leave this option disabled unless you deliberately want those items removed from your saved list.
