If your Brother printer shows “Deep Sleep,” press a control-panel button once and check for an error; deep sleep is normally a power-saving state, not proof of a fault. If the panel stays blank or the printer wakes but will not print, the cause may instead be power, a printer error, Wi-Fi, or the computer’s print setup. Start with the full model number, your operating system, and whether the printer uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB—Brother’s wake behavior and settings vary by model.

First, check whether it is asleep, powered off, or showing an error

Deep Sleep is a lower-power state a printer enters after spending time in Sleep mode. The timing depends on the model and its settings. For example, Brother’s Online User’s Guide for the HL-L2325DW, HL-L2350DW, HL-L2370DW, and HL-L2370DWXL says those models can wake when they receive a print job or when a control-panel button is pressed. Other models may behave or indicate the state differently, so check the guide for your exact printer.

  1. Find the complete model number on the printer’s label or a status page, and note your computer’s operating system and the printer’s connection type.
  2. Press a control-panel button once. Check whether the display or LEDs respond and whether an error appears. Clear any displayed error before trying to print again.
  3. If you need a Network Configuration report, make sure paper is loaded and resolve any panel error first; the printer cannot print the report while unable to feed paper or while an error is blocking printing.

A blank display by itself does not establish that deep sleep is the problem. The power check below helps distinguish a sleeping printer from one that is not receiving power.

If the printer stays blank, check power

  • Confirm the power cord is connected to the printer and a working AC outlet. Check that any power switch on the printer is on.
  • If the printer has an Auto Power Off feature, the exact behavior is model-specific. For models covered by Brother’s cited guidance, press the power key and then send the print job.
  • If the machine still will not power on after following its model-specific power instructions, Brother directs users to contact customer service. Do not repeatedly unplug it as a universal fix.

If it wakes but the job does not print, check the connection

When the display responds but printing does not, troubleshoot the route between the computer and printer rather than assuming the sleep state is stuck. For a network-connected printer, begin with its network status.

Check Wi-Fi and the printer’s IP address

  1. On Windows, follow Brother’s deep-sleep troubleshooting procedure to print a Network Configuration report. If it will not print, check for a panel error and load paper.
  2. Inspect the printer’s IP address on the report. An address of all zeros, an APIPA address beginning 169.254.x.x on a routed network, or an address outside the local network’s range can indicate a connectivity or configuration problem. The valid range depends on your router and network setup.
  3. Make sure the computer and printer are connected to the same local network, rather than separate guest networks or an ISP hotspot. Brother also suggests restarting the router as a troubleshooting check.

For model groups covered by Brother’s advice, check that printer and router firmware are current. Brother’s guidance for those affected wireless models specifies 2.4 GHz and recommends distinct network names (SSIDs) when a router broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. These details are not universal requirements for every Brother printer; confirm the wireless specifications for your model.

Check the computer’s queue and printer setup

On Windows, Brother’s workflow includes confirming the printer’s IP address, checking or adding a Standard TCP/IP port, clearing stuck jobs, and reinstalling the Brother software package if necessary. Firewall or security software, router state, and firmware are also among Brother’s suggested checks. If possible, try printing from another computer on the same network to help determine whether the issue is specific to one computer.

On a Mac, Brother’s Macintosh deep-sleep troubleshooting page advises removing and adding the printer again and selecting a driver appropriate for the macOS release covered by its instructions. It also recommends confirming the Mac is on the same local network, restarting the router when needed, and testing from another computer. Because macOS and its menus change, use Brother’s current instructions for your installed release rather than relying on old menu labels.

Can you change or disable Deep Sleep?

Do not assume Deep Sleep can be turned off. Brother’s deep-sleep troubleshooting pages say the feature cannot be disabled for the models covered by those instructions. Some models do offer a configurable Sleep Time, which controls a different part of the power-saving behavior; its availability and menu path vary.

Brother documents Sleep Time controls through the printer driver’s advanced options for models listed in its Sleep Time setting article. A separate, model-specific FAQ gives the printer-panel path General Setup > Ecology > Sleep Time for the models it lists. Check your exact model’s manual before changing a setting; changing Sleep Time is not the same as disabling Deep Sleep.

When Ethernet is worth trying

If you have confirmed recurring Wi-Fi disconnections and your printer has an Ethernet port, a wired connection is a reasonable alternative. Brother recommends Ethernet for better overall connectivity in certain cited gateway situations, subject to printer capability. It may improve connection stability, but it does not change how Deep Sleep itself works.

Connection What to weigh
Wi-Fi No network cable to route, but printing depends on a reliable wireless connection and compatible network setup.
Ethernet A wired link may help with recurring wireless dropouts; the printer needs an Ethernet port and a practical cable route to the router or network.

For a model-specific example of Brother’s wired-network guidance, see its wired network printing FAQ. Do not buy or switch cables unless the printer supports Ethernet and wireless disconnections are actually implicated.
