For a low-cost home server, a Raspberry Pi 5 is the more natural choice when you need a compact, headless machine for a small number of lightweight services. A Mac mini makes more sense when your services require macOS, you want configurable desktop-class hardware, or the computer must also serve another Mac-specific purpose. Neither is automatically cheaper: compare the complete local setup cost and confirm that your software supports the device’s operating system and processor architecture.

Which one fits your home server?

Choose When it fits What to check
Raspberry Pi 5 You want a small, headless system for a few lightweight services and want to keep the initial hardware footprint modest. Include boot storage and an adequate power supply in the full setup cost; verify that each service supports the operating system and processor architecture you plan to use.
Mac mini Your workload needs macOS, you want configurable memory or SSD options, or you value a configurable desktop computer beyond server use. Compare the exact model and configuration available locally, and check the server software’s macOS and processor support.

Compare complete setup cost, not just the computer

A Raspberry Pi 5 setup requires boot media: Raspberry Pi’s official getting-started guide says to write an operating-system image to storage before starting the device. Its power supply is another required part of the budget. Apple’s Mac mini specifications list a power cord in the box and configurable memory, SSD, and Ethernet options for the models shown.

There is no live, region-specific price comparison here. Check local prices for the exact Mac mini configuration and for a Raspberry Pi 5 plus storage and suitable power hardware. Include any other components your chosen setup requires; a bare-board price and a configured Mac mini price are not equivalent totals.

Check software and workload fit first

Write down the services you intend to host, then check each project’s current requirements for operating system and processor architecture. Apple identifies macOS as the Mac mini’s operating system. Raspberry Pi documentation covers headless setup, but that does not establish compatibility with every server application or container image.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not assume that a service or container available for one platform will run unchanged on the other. Verify support for the precise operating system and processor architecture you will install, especially if the service depends on a particular image or platform-specific package. No application-by-application compatibility or controlled workload benchmark is established here, so performance should not be inferred from these specifications alone.

Power: supply capacity is not the same as consumption

Raspberry Pi 5 power supply

Raspberry Pi recommends 5 V at 5 A and lists a 27 W USB-C power supply for Raspberry Pi 5 in its official setup documentation. The guide says using a 5 V at 3 A supply limits peripheral power to 600 mA. This is a supply recommendation and peripheral-power limit, not a measurement of the Pi’s ongoing electricity use.

Mac mini measured figures

Apple’s power figures are measured from the wall and are specific to the listed configurations. The page, published September 22, 2026, reports 4 W idle and 70 W maximum for the specified M6 configuration, and 4 W idle and 65 W maximum for the specified 2024 M4 configuration. Apple defines idle as Finder open under default power-management settings.

These figures are not a head-to-head test: Apple reports measured consumption, while Raspberry Pi’s 27 W figure is a recommended supply rating. Your actual electricity cost depends on the device’s consumption under your workload and your local electricity rate; no operating-cost calculation is established here.

Setup and networking

Raspberry Pi supports headless setup and access over SSH through Wi-Fi or Ethernet, according to its official documentation. The same documentation says Raspberry Pi 4 and newer have Gigabit Ethernet. This can suit a server that will live without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse once configured.

For either computer, check the interfaces and setup process your services need. A Mac mini’s exact connectivity depends on the model and configuration; consult Apple’s specifications for the option you are considering rather than assuming every listed model has the same networking configuration.

Memory, storage, and expansion

Apple lists configurable memory and SSD options for the Mac mini models on its specifications page. Raspberry Pi’s guide establishes that the Pi needs boot storage, but the cited information does not compare storage endurance, upgradeability, or measured input/output performance between the platforms. Choose capacity around your actual services and data, and check the product specifications for the particular configurations you are pricing.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Name the services. List what you want to host and check each service’s operating-system and processor-architecture requirements.
  2. Build complete local totals. Price the Raspberry Pi 5 with boot storage and suitable power hardware, and compare it with the specific Mac mini configuration you would actually buy.
  3. Match the setup to your network. Decide whether you want headless SSH access and which wired or wireless connections your deployment needs.
  4. Estimate ongoing power for your workload. Do not treat a supply’s rated capacity as the computer’s measured consumption; use workload-relevant consumption and your local electricity rate.
  5. Choose for the intended role. Favor the Pi for a compact, focused server when its software support and full setup cost fit. Favor the Mac mini when macOS, its configuration options, or another Mac-specific use justifies it.
