Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To test an API response in Postman, open the request, select Scripts > Post-response, add JavaScript assertions, and click Send. Postman runs the script after the response arrives; open Test Results to see which checks passed or failed. You can keep checks on one request or share them across a folder or collection, then run collections interactively or automate them with Postman CLI.
Write your first Postman response test
- Open the request you want to test. You can also open a collection or folder to add checks that apply more broadly.
- Select Scripts > Post-response.
- Add a test using
pm.test(name, function). Inside the function, inspect the response withpm.responseand assert expectations withpm.expect. - Click Send to send the request and run the post-response script once the response arrives.
- Open Test Results to review named tests and their pass or fail status.
A minimal status check looks like this:
pm.test("Status code is 200", function () {
pm.response.to.have.status(200);
});
Use the status required by the API contract for that operation. A successful create or asynchronous request, for example, may not return 200, so copy the expected outcome from the endpoint’s contract rather than assuming every successful response has the same code. Postman’s test-script documentation explains how post-response tests run and how to review their results.
Choose assertions that match the response contract
A useful test checks observable behavior that matters to the client of the API. Keep test names concise and descriptive, and separate unrelated checks so a failure identifies what needs attention.
Check JSON values and types
Use pm.response.json() to parse a JSON response, then assert required properties, values, or types. Parse it once when several assertions use the same body:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
pm.test("Response contains the expected user", () => {
const body = pm.response.json();
pm.expect(body.name).to.eql("Jane");
pm.expect(body.age).to.be.a("number");
});
Choose values that are stable under the contract. For fields that can legitimately vary, test their presence or type instead of hard-coding a particular value. For broader structural validation, Postman documents pm.response.to.have.jsonSchema(schema). Its response reference identifies Ajv 6.12.5 as the JSON Schema validator version; this implementation detail can change, so check the current response reference if your schema depends on validator behavior.
Check headers and cookies when they are part of the API behavior
Assert that required headers exist and, when meaningful, that their values match the contract. For a JSON endpoint, that may include checking the media type is appropriate, such as application/json. Check cookies only when the endpoint’s behavior relies on them; they are not a substitute for testing the response body or status.

Check response time with a justified threshold
pm.response.responseTime exposes the response time for an assertion. Set a threshold only when it reflects a stated service expectation and the test environment can support it. Network conditions and environment affect timing, so an arbitrary tight limit can create noisy failures rather than useful feedback.
Rerun tests against an existing response
Postman can rerun tests against the response already received without sending the request again. This is useful when refining assertions: adjust the script, rerun it, and inspect the updated results without making another API call.

Put checks at request, folder, or collection scope
Keep endpoint-specific expectations with the request. Move checks shared across several requests—such as common response conventions—to a folder or collection script. Postman documents the post-response execution order as collection tests, then folder tests, then request tests. This makes shared checks reusable while allowing individual requests to add their own assertions.
To run a collection, use Postman’s collection runner. It sends the requests in the run and reports test results across them, making it easier to see which request failed and which check did not pass. The collection-run documentation covers running collections and reviewing results.

Choose an interactive or automated run
| Run method | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Send a request in the Postman app | Writing and refining tests for an individual endpoint | Results are shown for that response in Test Results. |
| Collection runner | Running related requests and reviewing their combined test results | Collection and folder scripts let you reuse checks across requests. |
| Postman CLI | Local collection runs and CI/CD automation | Postman recommends it for new CI/CD workflows. Check supported protocols and authentication requirements for your setup. |
| Newman | Existing command-line collection workflows that are compatible with its supported collection format | Postman’s current reference says Newman is incompatible with the collection v3 format used in Postman v12 and later; verify compatibility before relying on an existing pipeline. |
Automate a collection with Postman CLI
Postman’s CI/CD guidance is to configure the collection and, optionally, an environment, select your provider and operating system, and use the command Postman generates in your pipeline. The CLI collection guide documents running collections locally, while the CI/CD integration guide describes setting up pipeline runs.
Account for the CLI’s documented scope when planning automation: its collection guide says it supports HTTP collection requests and, on paid plans, gRPC and GraphQL. It also says OAuth 2.0 authentication is not supported directly by the CLI. Do not assume an OAuth request will authenticate natively; use a supported credential or token workflow appropriate to your environment, and avoid placing secrets in scripts or committed collection files.

Newman is Postman’s open-source command-line collection runner and offers reporters. However, Postman’s current Newman reference says it does not support the collection v3 format used in Postman v12 and later and recommends Postman CLI for new CI/CD workflows. This compatibility guidance reflects the documentation available in October 2026; confirm the current reference before changing or depending on a pipeline, since product support can change.
Keep functional tests separate from performance testing
Assertions for status, body, headers, or response time verify functional expectations for requests. They do not by themselves establish how an API performs under load. Postman’s performance-testing guidance recommends collections that reflect realistic API traffic and critical workflows, assertions for status and response time, and avoiding destructive requests. Treat a performance run as a distinct exercise with an appropriate workload and safeguards, not as a larger version of a single-response test.
