If Windows 11 suddenly types different characters, first check whether it switched keyboard layouts: Windows+Space cycles forward through installed layouts, and Windows+Shift+Space cycles backward. Remove any layout you do not use at Settings > Time & language > Language & region. If you need several layouts, keep them installed and select the one you want from the taskbar input-language icon.
Confirm that the keyboard layout changed
Look at the input-language indicator on the taskbar, then type a character whose position differs between the layout you expect and the one currently active. If the indicator changed or the same key now produces a different character, Windows is likely using another keyboard layout.
The keyboard layout controls which characters keys produce; it is separate from the Windows display language, which controls the interface. Changing only the keyboard layout does not change the display language. Changing the display language, however, may also change the keyboard layout. Check for an accidental layout-switch shortcut
Windows provides shortcuts that switch input languages and keyboard layouts. An accidental press is one possible explanation for an unexpected change, especially if it happens while using key combinations; it is not the only possible cause.

These actions are listed in Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference. If the switch seems tied to typing or another shortcut, check whether a key is being pressed accidentally or held down.
Review the installed keyboard layouts
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Find each language that may have a keyboard installed and open its Language options.
- Review the entries under Keyboards. A layout may appear under the language that contains it or under the language matching the layout, so check the relevant language entries if you do not see it at first.

Remove a layout you do not need
In the language’s Language options, locate the unwanted keyboard under Keyboards, open its menu, and choose Remove. If it is not listed there, inspect the language entry that matches the layout.
Remove only layouts you no longer need. A removed layout cannot be selected again unless you add it back. If you type in multiple languages, keeping those layouts installed is usually more useful than removing them to prevent a mistaken switch.

Keep multiple layouts and select the right one
When you need more than one layout, use the taskbar input-language icon to see the active layout and select the intended one. Windows+Space is also a documented way to cycle through installed layouts, but it is a switching command, not a lock. The taskbar selection method is covered in Microsoft’s layout-management guide.

If the problem is specifically with Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) behavior, rather than ordinary cycling between keyboard layouts, Microsoft documents a compatibility option to use the previous IME version. Open the relevant Microsoft IME settings, go to General > Compatibility, and turn on Use previous version of Microsoft IME. Microsoft presents this as a workaround for problems with the current IME, not as a general fix for Windows changing layouts. See Microsoft’s IME compatibility instructions.
