Before asking receivers to quarantine or reject mail, inventory every service that sends with your domain in the visible From address, verify that each has at least one passing SPF or DKIM identifier aligned with that address, and use reports to resolve legitimate failures. Node.js sends the messages; DMARC policy is published in DNS for the domain.
How does DMARC avoid disrupting legitimate Node.js email?
DMARC checks whether a message’s visible From domain is authenticated by SPF or DKIM in an aligned way. At least one aligned method must pass. A standalone SPF pass or DKIM pass is not enough if the authenticated domain does not align with the domain shown to the recipient.
For SPF, compare the authenticated MAIL FROM domain with the RFC5322.From domain. For DKIM, compare the signing domain in a valid signature—the d= value—with the visible From domain. Relaxed alignment accepts domains that share an organizational domain; strict alignment requires an exact match. A provider can therefore pass SPF or DKIM and still fail DMARC if it authenticates using a domain that does not align.
Begin with p=none so the published DMARC policy does not request a change to message handling. Add rua to request aggregate reports, then use those reports to identify legitimate sending paths and correct authentication or alignment problems before enforcement.

What should the DMARC TXT record look like?
A basic monitoring record can look like this:
_dmarc.example.com TXT "v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc-reports@example.com"
Replace example.com with the domain whose visible From addresses you are protecting, and use a reporting mailbox controlled by its owner. Publish the record as a TXT record at _dmarc.<domain> using your DNS provider’s record interface and syntax. The example shows the version, policy, and aggregate-report fields; it does not ensure that an ordinary mailbox can conveniently process the XML reports.
The current core DMARC specification is IETF RFC 9989, by John R. Levine and Murray S. Kucherawy. Its deployment guidance says: “For best results, Domain Owners usually start with ‘p=none’ (see Section 5.1.5) with the ‘rua’ tag containing a URI that references the mailbox created in the previous step.” Aggregate reporting is specified separately in RFC 9990; failure reporting is covered by RFC 9991. These RFCs were published in 2026; RFC 7489 is not the current core specification.
Inventory every legitimate sender before enforcement
Make a working list of all services that send messages with your domain in the visible From address. Include application mail and third-party tools, not only the server running your Node.js application. Give each stream an owner and record how it is configured for SPF and DKIM.

This is an operational checklist, not an exhaustive list mandated by the standard. Its purpose is to uncover overlooked servers and third-party sending arrangements before a stricter policy affects delivery.

For every legitimate stream, confirm that at least one mechanism passes and aligns with the visible From domain. Configure DKIM signing with an aligned signing domain where the provider supports it. For SPF, check the domain the receiver actually authenticates in the message’s MAIL FROM identity; a provider’s default envelope domain may not align with your From domain. If supported, a custom aligned bounce or envelope domain can address that mismatch.
Relaxed alignment is the sensible starting point for most domains: it permits matching organizational domains rather than requiring identical names. RFC 9989 notes that nearly all domain owners have found relaxed alignment sufficient. Use strict alignment only when a specific security requirement justifies the tighter match.

Having both aligned SPF and DKIM can provide operational resilience if one mechanism fails along a particular delivery path, although DMARC requires only one aligned pass. Do not infer DMARC success from a provider dashboard’s generic “SPF pass” or “DKIM pass”; compare the authenticated domain with the actual From domain.
Test the real Node.js mail paths and inspect results
Node.js code and SMTP settings are only part of the delivery chain. The relevant standard does not prescribe one universal Node.js library or provider configuration. For each production path, send representative messages and inspect the received headers and subsequent aggregate reports.
- Check the visible sender: confirm the message’s From address uses the intended domain.
- Check DKIM: locate the valid DKIM signature and verify its
d=signing domain aligns with From. - Check SPF: inspect the receiver’s Authentication-Results for the SPF result and the authenticated MAIL FROM domain, then compare that domain with From.
- Check reports: confirm the stream appears in aggregate reports with the expected authentication and alignment outcomes.
- Repeat where the path differs: cover relevant retries, regions, staging or production domains, and third-party relays.
Nodemailer offers SMTP transport and has Node.js DNS-resolution behavior, but the project documentation does not establish a complete, version-pinned SPF/DKIM recipe for an unspecified provider. Configure authentication with the provider’s current instructions and validate what receivers actually see.

Use aggregate reports to fix failures before changing policy
Aggregate reports are a map of sources using the author domain as well as a record of authentication and alignment outcomes. Separate recognized, legitimate streams from unknown sources that may represent spoofing or other unauthorized use. Reports are machine-oriented; RFC 9990 describes their format, and RFC 9989 recommends parsing them.
For each legitimate failing stream, work with its application owner or provider to enable aligned DKIM, configure a custom aligned SPF envelope domain if available, or change the From domain to one the sender is authorized to use. Then send again and verify the updated result. Do not treat a legitimate but misconfigured source as disposable simply because it currently fails.
Report analysis can be done with owner-built tools or an optional third-party service. If you choose a service, compare its report coverage, source identification, retention and privacy practices, export options, and current cost rather than assuming all processors offer the same capabilities.

Choose a policy and alignment mode deliberately
| Choice | What it requests or accepts | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|
p=none |
Monitoring policy; does not request a DMARC-based change to message handling. | Useful while inventorying sources and resolving legitimate failures; not a guarantee of inbox delivery. |
p=quarantine |
Requests suspicious treatment for messages that fail DMARC. | Can affect delivery of legitimate mail if a sending path remains misconfigured. |
p=reject |
Requests rejection of messages that fail DMARC. | Strongest enforcement request, but receivers’ final handling is not guaranteed in every case. |
| Relaxed alignment | Accepts authenticated domains sharing the organizational domain with From. | Less brittle when legitimate services use aligned subdomains. |
| Strict alignment | Requires the authenticated domain to exactly match From. | Tighter matching can expose more configuration mismatches; use for a defined security need. |
The policy choice and alignment mode address different questions: policy requests how receivers handle DMARC failures, while alignment determines whether SPF or DKIM authentication counts for DMARC. The standards provide no universal number of days, report volume, or pass-rate threshold that guarantees enforcement is safe.
When can you change p=none to p=reject?
Change policy only after the domain owners have reviewed representative reports, accounted for legitimate sources, and resolved known legitimate failures. That is a readiness decision based on your actual sending inventory—not a fixed waiting period or percentage. If a newly discovered application or provider has not been verified, keep monitoring while you establish its alignment.
DMARC policy is a request to receiving systems, not a universal delivery command: p=reject does not guarantee every failing message will be rejected, and p=none does not guarantee inbox placement. The control point is the domain’s DNS record; Node.js mail code does not itself set that policy.
