To make a desktop pet react to game events instead of guessing, have the game or a documented game-specific integration emit a named event when something happens. A small adapter should validate and translate that event, then pass it to the pet, which maps it to a behavior or animation. This works best for a game you control or one with a supported API or mod interface; OBS, Steamworks, and Twitch each report events in their own domains, not arbitrary local gameplay facts.

Choose an event source that can actually know what happened

Start by deciding which system is authoritative for the event you want the pet to react to. If the game owns the state, the game should emit the event. If you use an external integration, keep its scope clear: a platform or streaming tool can report its own events without knowing the game’s internal score, inventory, or combat state.

Source Good for Does not establish Setup consideration
Game-owned custom event Exact state changes in a game you control State in other games Add event emission and a transport to the pet
Game-specific documented API or mod Facts the game explicitly exposes Unpublished or internal game facts Verify the exact game, interface, and permissions
Steamworks callback Steam platform events and asynchronous API outcomes General local game telemetry Integrate Steamworks and service callbacks regularly
Twitch EventSub Subscribed channel activity Local gameplay events Set up subscriptions, authentication, transport, and duplicate handling
OBS WebSocket OBS scene, source, and streaming-workflow changes Game score, deaths, or inventory Enable WebSocket access and secure it
Screen recognition Approximate visual cues Authoritative state or guaranteed accuracy Account for false positives and game/UI changes

For a game you control

Emit an event at the point where the game changes state—for example, when the game confirms a boss defeat, rather than when a similar-looking screen appears. Unity’s Event System supports sending input-based and custom events to application objects, which can help structure events inside a Unity game. It is not a ready-made external desktop-pet API: you still need to build the bridge from your game to the separate pet process. Unity Event System documentation.

For a game you did not build

Check that specific game’s developer documentation and community for a supported API, plugin, or mod interface. Unity Gaming Services has documented events related to player activity and game state that can trigger Cloud Code, but that does not mean an arbitrary installed Unity game exposes its telemetry externally. See the supported UGS events for the scope of that service.

Raspberry Pi 500 Desktop Computer Kit, 2.4GHz Quad-Core, 8GB RAM, with Keyboard, Mouse, 32GB SD Card
  • POWERFUL PROCESSOR: Features a 2.4GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 processor with 8GB RAM capacity for smooth performance and multitasking capabilities
  • COMPLETE KIT: Includes 32GB microSD card, micro HDMI to HDMI-A cable, USB mouse, US keyboard, and power supply for immediate setup
  • CONNECTIVITY: Multiple ports including USB 2.0, dual USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, and built-in Wi-Fi/Bluetooth for versatile connectivity options
  • DISPLAY OUTPUT: Supports micro HDMI output with OpenGL capabilities for high-quality visual display and graphics performance
  • EXPANSION OPTIONS: Equipped with GPIO pins, SD card slot, and wireless connectivity for extensive project development and customization

If the game provides no supported interface, exact reactions cannot be promised. Pixel or audio recognition may be an approximate fallback, but it can mistake menus, effects, layout changes, or similar sounds for the event you care about. Treat such detections as cues with possible false positives, not as confirmed game state.

Define a small event contract before writing animations

Keep the event data independent of the pet’s presentation. A practical contract can include a schema version, unique event ID, event type, timestamp, game ID, and a payload containing only the fields the pet needs. For example:

  "timestamp": "2026-10-04T12:00:00Z",
  "game_id": "my-game",
  "payload": { "boss_id": "forest_guardian" }
}

The example is a recommended design, not a vendor-prescribed format. Use stable event names such as health_changed, boss_defeated, or channel_followed, and document what each means. Keep different domains distinct: boss_defeated is a game-state event; channel_followed is a Twitch channel event; an OBS scene change is a streaming-software event.

  • Validate the sender, schema version, event type, and payload before acting on a message.
  • Use event IDs to ignore duplicates where the source can redeliver.
  • Keep ingestion and validation separate from pet animation code so a change of transport does not require rewriting behaviors.
  • Choose a neutral idle state for periods when no event arrives.

Build the path from event to pet behavior

  1. Emit: The game or supported integration produces an event when its relevant state changes.
  2. Adapt: A source-specific adapter validates the message and translates it into your common event contract.
  3. Transport: Deliver the event to the pet process. For two processes on one computer, local IPC, a WebSocket, or a pipe may be suitable engineering choices; the right option depends on the app, authentication, and reconnect needs. The cited OBS and Twitch documentation describes WebSocket event transports for those products, not a mandated local game-to-pet transport.
  4. Dispatch: The pet routes the validated event type to a behavior handler, such as a celebration animation for boss_defeated.
  5. Observe: Log received events and the resulting behavior so you can tell whether a problem is in the source, adapter, transport, or animation mapping.

Keep any network listener protected, validate all incoming data, and handle disconnects and reconnects deliberately. Do not let untrusted messages directly invoke arbitrary behavior or code.

Use third-party integrations only for their own events

Steamworks callbacks

Steamworks is optional for shipping a game on Steam. Its callback system reports Steam events and asynchronous API results; it is not a general feed of a game’s health, combat, or inventory state. A Steam overlay activation callback could drive a reaction to the overlay event, but not prove that a player won a fight. Valve’s Steamworks API overview explains the API and callback model. If you use C#, Steamworks.NET’s getting-started guide documents its wrapper path and asynchronous callbacks. Callback handlers need to be serviced regularly to reduce delivery latency.

OBS WebSocket

OBS Studio 28 and later include WebSocket integration for external applications that automate or control scenes and sources. The protocol lets clients subscribe to event categories and receive OBS change events, such as scene or source state changes. That can make a pet react when a scene switches; it does not turn OBS into a general gameplay API. Consult the OBS Remote Control Guide and obs-websocket protocol, and protect the connection with a password.

Twitch EventSub

Twitch EventSub can notify an application about subscribed channel events, including follows, subscriptions, cheers, and Channel Points redemptions. It supports Webhook, WebSocket, and Conduit transports. With WebSocket, the client receives a Welcome message before creating subscriptions. Notifications are at-least-once and may be resent, so deduplicate using the message ID. This is suitable for audience-driven pet behaviors, not for reading local gameplay facts. See Twitch EventSub, Getting Events Using WebSockets, and Managing Subscriptions.

Test the event flow without relying on a live game

Before connecting a real source, send deterministic mock events through the same adapter, transport, and behavior path that production events will use. Check that each recognized event produces the intended pet response, malformed input is rejected, and duplicate messages do not trigger repeated reactions. A visible event log makes failures easier to isolate. These checks verify your implementation path; they do not establish compatibility with a particular third-party game.

  • If no event appears in the log, inspect the source integration and its subscription or callback setup.
  • If the event appears but the pet does nothing, check event-name mapping and behavior state transitions.
  • If an action repeats, inspect event IDs and the source’s delivery behavior.
  • If messages stop after a disconnect, check reconnect handling and whether the source requires subscriptions to be recreated.

When OBS or screen recognition is the only available route

To make OBS react to in-game events, the game still needs to expose those events through a supported API, plugin, mod, or other integration that can change an OBS scene or source. OBS can report its own state and participate in automation; it does not infer arbitrary game state merely because the game is visible in a capture. A community question phrased as “How to make obs react to ingame events?” reflects this practical distinction, but it is anecdotal rather than official technical guidance: OBS community discussion.

When no authoritative game interface exists, visual or audio detection is a fallback with uncertainty. If reliable reactions matter, instrument a game you control or choose one with a documented integration rather than presenting recognition guesses as confirmed events.
