Use database foreign keys to enforce relationships that must remain valid for every write, and use Laravel application checks to provide useful feedback and enforce contextual rules. They solve different problems: an application check helps a workflow respond clearly, while a foreign key is the database’s final safeguard against a dangling reference. For important relationships, use both.
What each approach protects
Database foreign keys protect stored relationships
A foreign key links a child table’s key to a referenced key. The database rejects a write that would violate that relationship. Laravel’s migration documentation describes foreign-key constraints as a way to “force referential integrity at the database level” (Laravel migrations).
That protection applies at the database boundary, not just when a request passes through a particular Laravel controller. It matters when writes can also come from scripts, queue workers, administrative tools, or another service connected to the same database.
Application checks protect workflows and explain rules
Application-level checks can tell a user why an operation is not allowed, verify authorization, and enforce domain rules that a foreign key cannot express. For example, a foreign key can ensure an order refers to an existing customer; it cannot determine whether that customer is currently allowed to place an order.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Checks run only along the application paths that execute them. They should not be treated as a substitute for a database invariant that must hold regardless of who performs the write.
Define the relationship in a Laravel migration
Laravel supports explicit foreign-key declarations as well as the shorter foreignId(...)->constrained() form. A migration can also specify what should happen when the referenced row is updated or deleted.

Schema::create('orders', function (Blueprint $table) {
$table->id();
$table->foreignId('user_id')
->constrained()
->restrictOnDelete();
});
Here, the foreign key connects orders.user_id to the referenced users key, and restrictOnDelete() prevents deletion of a user while related orders remain. Confirm the referenced table and key conventions for your schema; use an explicit table or column argument when conventions do not match. See Laravel’s migration documentation for declaration syntax and supported actions.
Choose update and delete behavior from the data lifecycle
A foreign key’s action is a data-lifecycle decision, not a setting with one universally correct value. Laravel migrations provide methods including cascadeOnDelete, restrictOnDelete, nullOnDelete, and noActionOnDelete, as well as corresponding update actions.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Cascade: use when child records genuinely share the parent’s lifecycle and should be removed or changed with it.
- Restrict: use when related children must prevent the parent from being removed or changed.
- Set null: use when the child remains valid without an owner; the foreign-key column must allow null values.
- No action: use when the database’s no-action behavior fits the schema and engine in use.
Consider retention, audit, and legal requirements before cascading deletion. A convenient cascade can be inappropriate if dependent records must be retained. Check how the selected action behaves on the actual database driver rather than assuming every engine handles it identically.
Use application checks alongside the constraint
An application can check that a referenced record exists before attempting a write, then present a clear validation message if it does not. But the record could be deleted after the check and before the write. The database constraint is the authoritative guard at write time, so handle a constraint failure as well as the earlier application check.

When several database operations must succeed or fail together, use a transaction. Laravel’s DB::transaction covers query-builder and Eloquent operations: a successful closure commits, while an exception rolls back the transaction and is rethrown. Laravel also accepts an optional attempts value to retry transactions affected by deadlocks. A transaction groups operations; a foreign key expresses a relationship in the schema. Neither makes the other unnecessary. See Laravel database transactions.
Check database versions and SQLite configuration
Laravel 13.x documents first-party support for these database versions and newer: MariaDB 10.3+, MySQL 5.7+, PostgreSQL 10.0+, SQLite 3.26.0+, and SQL Server 2017+ (Laravel database documentation). These compatibility floors are tied to that framework documentation; verify the requirements for your Laravel release and the database version actually deployed.

SQLite requires particular attention. Laravel says SQLite foreign-key constraints are enabled by default for SQLite connections and can be disabled with DB_FOREIGN_KEYS=false. Laravel also documents SQLite migration caveats. Test the precise SQLite version and configuration used in development, CI, and production rather than inferring behavior from MySQL or another driver. Laravel provides migration methods to enable or disable foreign-key constraints and to run a closure with constraints disabled; treat these as deliberate migration operations, not proof that constraints are active in every environment.
Quick Recap
Decide where each rule belongs
- Must every database write preserve the relationship? Define a database foreign key where the relationship is within the same relational database.
- Does the user need context, authorization, or a domain-specific explanation? Add an application-level check for that workflow.
- Could data change between the check and write, or do related writes need to succeed together? Keep the foreign key and use a transaction where the multi-operation workflow requires atomicity.
- What happens when the parent changes or is deleted? Choose cascade, restriction, nulling, or no action according to lifecycle and retention needs.
- Are environments configured consistently? Confirm engine versions and constraint settings across local, test, and production databases.
- Is the relationship across databases or an external service? A local foreign key cannot enforce a relationship across that boundary. Use an explicit application or integration strategy, and do not present it as equivalent to a relational constraint.
