A cross-border stablecoin payment reaches a bank account through several separate steps: fiat is converted to a stablecoin, the token is sent to a receiving wallet over a blockchain, and an off-ramp or receiving institution converts it into local currency and pays the bank account. Blockchain confirmation marks only the crypto-transfer stage—not proof that the bank payout has arrived.

How a wallet-to-bank stablecoin payment works

The exact arrangement varies: the sender, a payment provider, an exchange, or a bank may handle different steps. The route also depends on whether a provider supports the countries, currency, stablecoin, blockchain network, and intended bank payout method. The BIS/CPMI describes off-ramps as potentially involving providers, banks, centralized exchanges, or other platforms, with the available payment method depending on domestic and cross-border payment infrastructure: BIS/CPMI cross-border payments report.

  1. Choose a supported route. Check that a provider accepts the asset and network, serves both countries and the relevant currencies, and can pay the recipient’s bank account.
  2. Fund and convert. The sender, a sending institution, or its provider converts local fiat into a stablecoin through an on-ramp or banking partner. The arrangement determines who performs the conversion and who holds or controls the assets.
  3. Send the stablecoin. Transfer the token to the recipient’s wallet address using the selected blockchain. Confirm the asset, network, and destination address before sending; a deposit route for one network is not necessarily interchangeable with another. Visa describes the transfer as being verified and recorded on-chain in its stablecoin explainer.
  4. Convert and request payout. The receiving institution, exchange, or off-ramp converts the stablecoin into the destination currency and sends fiat to the beneficiary’s bank account.
  5. Verify bank receipt. Check the recipient’s bank account and compare the credited amount with the provider’s final quote, accounting for conversion and fees. A confirmed blockchain transfer and a completed fiat payout are distinct events.

Where delays and fees can occur

There is no corridor-independent fee or end-to-end delivery time established for this process. A blockchain transfer may be confirmed before the off-ramp finishes checks or the bank posts the payout. Visa describes blockchain settlement as typically taking minutes and contrasts it with a traditional SWIFT transfer, but that company-authored generalization is not a guaranteed time for a particular wallet-to-bank route. Visa’s broad lower-cost claims likewise do not establish that a specific route will cost less.

The Financial Stability Board says differing cross-border legal and supervisory regimes can make compliance more complex, raise costs, and slow processing. Its recommendations emphasize consumer protection and proportionate attention to operational risks such as fraud, cyber and third-party risks, resilience, and financial crime: FSB report on cross-border payments.

What to check before sending

  1. Ask the provider whether it supports the exact sender and recipient countries, fiat currencies, stablecoin, and blockchain network.
  2. Confirm the recipient’s bank account and payout method are eligible, and follow the provider’s instructions for account details and name matching.
  3. Review the amount the recipient should receive after the quoted exchange rate, spread, network charge, provider fees, and possible bank deductions.
  4. Read the provider’s estimated times for each stage and what it says to do if a transfer is delayed, held, or rejected.
  5. Verify the wallet address, asset, and network immediately before submitting the transaction.
  6. After sending, track the blockchain transaction and the provider’s fiat payout separately; rely on the bank’s posted credit to confirm receipt.

Regulation and compliance depend on the route

Crypto payments should not be assumed to be anonymous, unregulated, or exempt from checks. Requirements depend on the jurisdictions involved, the asset, the service model, and the providers in the chain.

United Kingdom

The FCA describes registered crypto firms that provide fiat-to-crypto and crypto-to-fiat on- and off-ramp services, including through embedded widgets. It also warns that firms facilitating those services may face risks when unregistered partners appear to make illegal financial promotions to UK consumers. This is UK-specific guidance, not a universal rule: FCA guidance on cryptoasset on/off-ramps.

In a separate 2026 update, the FCA said it published final policy statements for its cryptoasset regime on 30 June 2026; the gateway for firms wishing to conduct cryptoasset activities opens on 30 September 2026; and the regime starts on 25 October 2027. Those are dates for the UK plan described on the FCA page, not a global timetable. The page also says outputs from its stablecoin sprint will inform future stablecoin-payments policy. It records about 75 sprint attendees from a range of banking, payments, money-transfer, fintech, crypto, stablecoin-issuer, consulting, infrastructure, and industry-body groups; attendance does not establish consumer adoption or payment performance. The FCA’s institutional summary of participant feedback called cross-border use cases “the clearest near-term payments opportunity, particularly compared to correspondent banking.” Its own stated aim was: “We want payments and settlement to be cheaper, faster and built on secure and, where needed, interoperable infrastructure that enables innovation and growth.” These are statements of feedback and policy intent, not evidence that a particular payment will be cheaper or faster: FCA crypto sprint and policy update.

European Union

EU Regulation 2023/1113 addresses information accompanying transfers of funds and certain crypto-assets. Its requirements include originator information for covered crypto-asset service providers. Whether particular rules apply depends on the transfer and entities involved; consult the current regulation text rather than assuming the rule applies identically to every wallet or payment: EU Regulation 2023/1113.

International assessments

In a report published on 31 October 2023, BIS/CPMI said that, at that time, no stablecoin arrangements were deemed properly designed and regulated and fully compliant with all relevant requirements. It emphasized the principle “same business, same risks or risk profile, same regulatory outcome.” That is a dated assessment, not a fresh 2026 survey of every stablecoin arrangement: BIS/CPMI report.
