To check whether the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) repository is consistent, open an elevated Command Prompt and run winmgmt /verifyrepository. A consistent result checks the repository itself; it does not certify every WMI provider, namespace, or application that relies on WMI.

Run the WMI repository consistency check

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.

  2. At the command prompt, enter winmgmt /verifyrepository and press Enter.

  3. Read the response. Windows reports whether the repository is consistent or inconsistent. The command checks the live repository when you do not supply a path. Microsoft documents this command for Windows Vista and later; its syntax is not different for Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Microsoft’s winmgmt command reference.

What the result does—and does not—tell you

The check addresses repository consistency, not the overall health of WMI or Windows. A consistent repository does not rule out a problem with a particular provider, namespace, application, or another part of the operating system. Conversely, a WMI error does not by itself prove repository corruption: Microsoft notes that errors can originate elsewhere in Windows, and an error message alone is typically not enough to identify the cause. See Microsoft’s WMI troubleshooting guidance.

Missing classes or instances can be a clue when investigating repository problems, but that symptom is not a diagnosis on its own. Consider whether the failure affects one application or multiple WMI-dependent functions, and investigate the relevant provider or Windows component if the repository reports consistent.

What to do if the repository is inconsistent

Microsoft documents salvage and reset as separate recovery operations. They are not substitutes for the health check, and both make changes to the repository.

Salvage: attempt to retain readable repository content

From an elevated Command Prompt, run winmgmt /salvagerepository. This checks consistency and rebuilds the repository if it finds an inconsistency, merging content it can read. MOF files marked with #pragma autorecover are restored.

Rank #3

Reset: restore the initial-install repository state

The command winmgmt /resetrepository returns the repository to its state at Windows installation and restores autorecover MOF files. This is a significant reset, not a routine check; use it only when troubleshooting justifies that broader change.

Microsoft explicitly warns: “Under any circumstances, do not delete the WMI repository as a first action because deleting the repository can cause damage to the system or to installed applications.” Follow Microsoft’s repository recovery documentation rather than manually deleting the repository folder.

Check a saved repository copy

winmgmt /verifyrepository can also check a saved copy of the entire repository folder when given a path. This is different from the no-argument command, which checks the live repository. Consult Microsoft’s command syntax and requirements for the path form.
