Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

For freelance invoicing, compare online card and bank-transfer fees separately, then weigh payment options, invoicing workflow, account eligibility, payout and dispute terms, and the agreement that applies in your country.
Start with how clients will pay you
Write down the ways you expect to collect money: online card payments through invoices or links, bank transfers, digital wallets, keyed-in payments, and in-person cards. Then estimate your typical invoice size and number of transactions. The fee for a card-present payment may differ from an online invoice or bank transfer, even with the same processor.
For example, Square’s US fee schedule separates card-present, online, online API, and invoice ACH pricing. Use the row for the actual client journey, not a rate advertised for another channel. See Square’s US fees page.
Compare the full cost for your payment mix
Calculate what each processor would charge against the same expected payments. Include the percentage fee, fixed per-transaction amount, subscription charges, and fees for any optional services you plan to use. If you accept multiple methods, calculate each separately before adding them together.

A fixed fee takes a larger share of a small invoice than a large one. Compare several representative invoice amounts and transaction counts rather than relying on one percentage figure. Check the fee schedule for your country and account: the examples below are from current US provider pages and are not global rates.
| Provider and option | Published US example | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Square Payment Links | 3.3% + 30¢ per standard online transaction; no upfront fee listed on the Payment Links page | Other Square rates vary by plan and payment method. The broader US schedule lists different card-present, online, online API, and invoice ACH categories. Square Payment Links and Square fees |
| Stripe | The pricing page presents standard pricing across online and in-person payments, but the applicable fee depends on product and market | Check the pricing row for the specific payment method and service you will use. Stripe also offers no-code Payment Links. Stripe pricing |
| PayPal invoicing | No single invoice rate is stated here; merchant fees differ by transaction type and domestic or international payment | Match the fee row to the payment method you enable and the transaction’s market. PayPal says its merchant fee page was last updated September 1, 2026. PayPal merchant fees |
Square’s US fees page displays plan-column examples of 2.6% + 15¢, 2.5% + 15¢, and 2.4% + 15¢ for card-present payments, and 3.3% + 30¢, 2.9% + 30¢, and 2.9% + 30¢ for online payments. These are listed plan rates, not a guarantee that every account qualifies for every rate. Check the current schedule for your plan and method before calculating costs.

Check whether clients can pay easily
A lower fee is less useful if a client cannot use the payment method or finds the checkout inconvenient. Confirm whether clients can pay by their preferred card, wallet, or bank method, and whether they need an account with the provider.

- Square: Lists payment links and invoices among its no-hardware payment options, and its Payment Links page describes supported payment methods. See Square Payment Links.

Match the invoicing workflow to your business
Decide whether a hosted invoice or payment link is enough, or whether you need a more integrated checkout. Consider how you send invoices, handle repeat billing, track whether a client has paid, and reconcile transactions with your bookkeeping or project-management tools.

A hosted payment link can let you collect online without building a website checkout or buying a terminal. Square says hardware is not required for invoices, payment links, virtual terminal, or Tap to Pay methods. That does not mean every feature is available in every country or account; check the local product details.
Review eligibility, payouts, and disputes
Before you make a processor your main way to get paid, check that it supports your country and the specific freelance work you do. Approval should not be assumed: Stripe says its review upon activation determines whether a business is supported. Square’s terms list unsupported activity. Read the relevant terms before sending clients payment links or moving recurring invoices.

- Estimate your payment mix. Use recent or expected payments, separating online cards, wallets, bank transfers, and in-person transactions. Include typical invoice sizes and transaction counts.
- Find matching fee rows. For every candidate, identify the fees for your country, plan, and actual payment channels. Add fixed fees, subscriptions, and optional-service charges.
- Calculate costs on the same scenarios. Compare several realistic invoice amounts and your expected payment mix; do not compare an in-person rate with an online invoice rate.
- Try the client-facing flow. Check what payment methods appear, whether clients need an account, and how easy it is to pay and get a receipt.
- Read the account terms. Confirm eligibility, payout, refund, reserve, and dispute rules for your business and location.
- Test before switching fully. Run the invoicing and reconciliation workflow before relying on one route, and keep a suitable alternative payment option where practical.
Choose for your actual situation, not a universal ranking
There is no single lowest-cost or best processor established for all freelancers: the answer depends on location, payment method, invoice size, plan, and account terms. Treat Stripe, Square, and PayPal’s published US pages as starting points for a like-for-like comparison, then confirm current terms for your own account before switching.
