For a livestream chat where viewers send messages and receive everyone else’s, WebSockets are usually the better fit: one connection supports traffic in both directions. Server-Sent Events (SSE) can deliver the incoming feed, but a viewer must submit messages through a separate HTTP request. That can work well when the chat’s delivery and submission paths are intentionally separate.
How do WebSockets and SSE differ for chat?
| Question | WebSockets | Server-Sent Events |
|---|---|---|
| Which direction can the connection carry? | Both client-to-server and server-to-client. | Server-to-client in the browser; EventSource does not send messages back to the server. |
| How does a viewer submit a chat message? | Through the WebSocket connection. | Through a separate request, typically an HTTP endpoint. |
| How does reconnection work? | The application needs to plan reconnect behavior and how to resynchronize. | EventSource retries a dropped stream. Events can include IDs so a reconnect can identify the last event received. |
| Does reconnect ensure every missed message is restored? | Not by itself; recovery depends on application behavior. | No. IDs and retry do not guarantee that the server retained or replayed missed messages. |
MDN describes SSE as a text event stream delivered over HTTP. The server responds with Content-Type: text/event-stream; event fields such as data, event, id, and retry are separated into event blocks by blank lines. See MDN’s guide to using server-sent events and the web.dev overview of EventSource.
When should a livestream use WebSockets?
Choose WebSockets when the chat needs interactive traffic in both directions over one connection: viewers submit messages, while the service delivers messages and other updates. This avoids pairing one incoming stream with a separate message-submission request.
That is a fit recommendation based on the direction of communication, not proof that WebSockets always have lower latency, lower cost, or greater capacity. The application still needs to define authorization, reconnect behavior, message recovery, and operational handling.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Can SSE work for livestream chat?
Yes. SSE can carry the live feed from the server to each browser, while viewers submit messages through a separate authenticated HTTP request. This design is useful when one-way delivery is an intentional boundary or when the existing system already separates message submission from feed distribution.
Plan recovery as an application feature
EventSource retries a disconnected stream. SSE events can carry an id, allowing a reconnect to identify the last event received. Those mechanisms do not guarantee that every missed chat message will arrive: the server must retain messages and support replay if the product requires it.

For a recoverable feed, define message IDs, retention duration, replay behavior, duplicate handling, and how a client resynchronizes if the requested history is no longer available. Treat these as application design decisions, not automatic SSE guarantees. The WHATWG HTML Standard’s Server-sent events section specifies the event-stream behavior.
Keep the stream alive and correctly framed
Serve a persistent HTTP response with Content-Type: text/event-stream and separate event blocks with a blank line. Periodic comment lines can help keep an otherwise idle connection alive. EventSource also supports named events and reconnect settings; event IDs can mark a position in the stream. MDN documents these details in its SSE implementation guide.

How do HTTP versions and connection limits affect SSE?
Connection management can matter when a browser has several SSE feeds open. MDN documents a low limit of six open SSE connections per browser and domain when HTTP/2 is not used. With HTTP/2, the simultaneous stream limit is negotiated between client and server; MDN notes a default of 100, not a universal guarantee for every deployment. Actual capacity depends on the negotiated settings and infrastructure. Check MDN’s connection-limit discussion against the HTTP version and deployment you expect to support.
Also test how the actual network path handles long-lived connections, including intermediaries and proxies. Protocol documentation alone cannot establish how a particular deployment will behave.

How should you choose for your audience and workload?
- Choose WebSockets if client submissions and server broadcasts should share a bidirectional connection.
- Consider SSE plus HTTP submissions if a one-way feed suits the architecture and a separate authenticated submission endpoint is acceptable.
- Define delivery guarantees before implementation: decide whether reconnecting viewers need missed messages, and specify retention, replay, duplicate handling, and resynchronization.
- Test the deployment you will run. No workload-matched benchmark here establishes a universal winner for livestream-chat latency, cost, or capacity. Measure with your expected event rate, concurrent audience, network path, and recovery requirements.
