SteamVR support alone does not guarantee that a headset can track every SteamVR controller. Compatibility depends on the controller’s tracking system, the headset’s support for that system, compatible base stations, and—after tracking works—pairing and game input bindings. Valve specifically lists Index Controllers for the Index, HTC Vive, and HTC Vive Pro, and lists Vive and Vive Pro Wands as compatible with Index.
What determines whether a SteamVR controller works?
Separate two questions: can the headset run SteamVR, and can it track the controller? Valve describes Index Controllers as compatible with headsets that support SteamVR Tracking, naming the Valve Index, HTC Vive, and HTC Vive Pro. That does not establish compatibility with every headset that can launch SteamVR. Check the exact headset maker’s specifications for SteamVR Tracking support before buying or setting up a lighthouse-tracked controller. See Valve’s Valve Index Controllers listing.
- Tracking system: Confirm the headset supports the controller’s tracking method; software runtime support by itself is not enough.
- Base station generation: Confirm that the controller and headset work with the stations you have, and keep all stations in one setup to the same generation.
- Exact hardware revision: Original Vive hardware and Vive Pro-family hardware do not have identical station compatibility. Some Cosmos configurations also require a particular faceplate.
- Pairing and game input: Pairing a controller does not ensure a game has suitable controls or bindings.
Which combinations are officially documented?
The following are named examples in Valve and HTC compatibility information, not an exhaustive cross-brand matrix.
| Combination | Documented compatibility |
|---|---|
| Valve Index headset and Index Controllers | Valve documents this combination. The Index requires at least one base station; Valve recommends two. Valve Index system requirements |
| Valve Index headset and Vive or Vive Pro Wands | Valve says Index is compatible with both Wand types, subject to base station generation restrictions below. Valve Index system requirements |
| HTC Vive headset and Index Controllers | Valve names HTC Vive as compatible when the headset supports SteamVR Tracking. Valve Index Controllers listing |
| HTC Vive Pro headset and Index Controllers | Valve names HTC Vive Pro as compatible when the headset supports SteamVR Tracking. Check the specific station generation and kit. Valve Index Controllers listing |
| Index headset and Base Station 1.0 or 2.0 | Valve says both generations work with Index, but they cannot be mixed together in one setup. Valve Index system requirements Valve base station and Lighthouse tracking support |
| Original Vive headset or original Vive Wands and Base Station 2.0 | Valve says 2.0 stations do not work with the original Vive headset or Wand controllers. HTC’s table lists original Vive headset and controllers for 1.0 only. Valve base station and Lighthouse tracking support HTC VIVE base station compatibility table |
| Vive Pro, Vive Pro Eye, Vive Pro 2, and specified Cosmos products with base stations | HTC lists these products as working with both station generations. For Cosmos, the External Tracking Faceplate is required where specified in HTC’s table. HTC VIVE base station compatibility table |
Base Station 1.0 and 2.0 are not interchangeable in one setup
Valve states that HTC-branded 1.0 and Valve-branded 2.0 Base Stations will not work with each other in the same VR setup. Compatibility with one generation does not mean a headset or controller works with the other. The original Vive headset and original Vive Wands are the key exception to watch: Valve says they do not work with 2.0 stations, while HTC’s table lists those original products for 1.0 only. Read the model-specific compatibility information before adding stations or replacing a controller.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Valve’s Index requirements say the headset needs at least one base station and recommend two. This is a manufacturer setup specification for Index, not a universal requirement for every headset or tracking arrangement. See Valve’s Base Station and Lighthouse Tracking support page and HTC’s compatibility table for the listed product details.
Pairing, tracking, and game controls are separate steps
Once the hardware is compatible, the controller still needs to be paired and recognized by SteamVR. Valve’s Index setup instructions provide this pairing path:

- Open the SteamVR status window.
- Select Devices > Pair Controller.
- Follow the on-screen instructions for the controller.
- Check the SteamVR status window. Valve says a blue controller LED means it is powered on but not paired; a green device icon indicates it is ready for use.
- Complete Room Setup if needed, and make sure devices can be seen by the base stations. Valve recommends aiming stations toward the play area and maintaining visibility between stations and tracked devices.
Pairing and tracking do not settle whether a particular game’s controls will behave as expected. Valve says titles without native Index Controller support should map existing control schemes automatically, and SteamVR lets users configure bindings. If a controller tracks but in-game actions are missing or awkward, check the game’s controller support and SteamVR bindings rather than treating it as a base station failure. Setup details are in Valve’s Index setup guide.

- Identify the exact headset and controller revision. “Vive” can mean original Vive or a later Vive-family product, and the station rules differ. For Cosmos, identify whether the External Tracking Faceplate is part of the setup.
- Verify the tracking system. Look for explicit support for SteamVR Tracking, not just a statement that the headset works with SteamVR. Valve’s named Index Controller compatibility list is the Valve Index Controllers listing.
- Identify the base station generation. Check whether your stations are 1.0 or 2.0, then confirm the headset and controller support that generation. Do not combine station generations in one setup.
- Check setup requirements separately. Tracking compatibility does not replace the headset’s computer, port, placement, visibility, or Room Setup requirements. Valve lists Index DisplayPort and USB requirements separately from controller compatibility in its Index system requirements.
- Confirm pairing and application support. Use SteamVR’s Devices > Pair Controller menu, then check the game’s controller support and bindings.
For headsets or receiver configurations not named by Valve or HTC here, compatibility is not established by these documented examples. Consult the exact headset maker’s controller and tracking documentation rather than inferring support from the SteamVR label.
